Eli Whitney And The Cotton Gin

Eli Whitney and Cyrus McCormick are two of the most impressive early inventors in United States history. Both inventors had huge impacts on the agricultural field with their respective inventions. Whitney’s cotton gin, which was created in 1793, revolutionized the plantation of the South. Similarly, McCormick’s reaper had the same effect on the North. The reaper had much of the same effect on wheat that the gin had on cotton, allowing wheat field to be picked in a fraction of the time after its use became widespread years after its creation for a neighboring farm in 1831.

Invented by Eli WHitney in 1793, because of the cotton gin it reduced the amount of time and cost of separating the cotton seeds from white fiber. Due to the cotton gin, cotton farming became much more profitable in the South. Because of the cotton gin, the demand of the cotton grew and increased slavery. So, without the cotton gin, the economy of the South would stay less developed. Even though South could use slaves to do the work the cotton gin did, eventually their manual speed would decrease, as they tired. A machine did not get tired. However, the Southern planters would still have grown cotton, because it was a cash crop. Cotton was used in many states in the United States in variety of different ways.

If the cotton gin had been invented at an earlier time the slavery wouldn’t happen because they wouldn’t need anyone to do the work, they needed to be done. People or more like slaves were being exploited due to the work they were doing. If the machines, they needed would have been invented at this time there would have not been a problem in looking for people to do any work and overworking them. There’s always different opinions whether positive or negative. The negative opinions were affecting certain people, such as the ones that were put under pressure by doing all the work.

With Ely Whitney's invention of the cotton gin, cotton farming drove several changes. Cotton farmers could grow more cotton, considering processing cotton became more efficient with the cotton gin (Schultz, 2013). This change drove increases in land use, the establishment of additional farms, and a sharp increase in the use of enslaved people. These additional farms increased the wealth of southern farmers but caused several environmental problems considering the additional land clearing required to open fields and the soil damage caused by overuse. The increase in profits led to the demand for more slaves to help plant and harvest the cotton. The slaves were no longer needed in the removal of seeds from cotton but were needed in increase numbers for planting and harvesting. There was a direct correlation between the increase in cotton production and the increase in slave populations

Before its invention it took hours to get the seeds out of just a few pounds of cotton. However, in 1794 Eli Whitney created the hand cranked gin which could clean the seeds out of 50 pounds of cotton each day. This newfound technology allowed plantation owners to sell more cotton faster. Because of this huge plantations began popping up all throughout the South and each plantation needed more slaves to harvest the cotton. In the period after the gin’s invention until Congress abolished the importing of slaves it is estimated that Southern states brought in around 100,000 slaves from Africa.

The cotton gin, invented by Eli Whitney, made farmer’s jobs easier in the Industrial Age. The invention made cotton a more profitable crop for farmers. Eventually cotton became farmers main crop. Since it was the main crop for many farmers it increased the cotton plantations.
