The American System introduced significant changes in the American way of living. Driving the Market Revolution, the American System changed social life, the economy, and politics in the United States, some for better and some for worse. The Market Revolution prompted the establishment of new social classes with the introduction of factories and increased immigration. Other social changes happened in the wake of growing cities and increased populations throughout the country. Immigrants and women experienced some of the most significant changes in societal acceptance during this period. Social constructs limiting women as domestic servants to the family melted away as families realized the need for additional income for the family (Sellers, 1991). Given most of society's poor opinion of their actions, immigrants' social status suffered. Most immigrants arriving to work in the factories came from Germany and Ireland. American society began to frown on drinking, which turned out as something the Irish participated in on a regular basis (Sellers, 1991). This massive influx of immigrants pushed the urbanization of America since they required housing close to factories. Additionally, the market revolution brought about different social classes due to the status of people, whether workers, merchants, business owners, or educated professionals. Most people found changes in societal norms allowing for increased income and more free time for leisure …show more content…
With Ely Whitney's invention of the cotton gin, cotton farming drove several changes. Cotton farmers could grow more cotton, considering processing cotton became more efficient with the cotton gin (Schultz, 2013). This change drove increases in land use, the establishment of additional farms, and a sharp increase in the use of enslaved people. These additional farms increased the wealth of southern farmers but caused several environmental problems considering the additional land clearing required to open fields and the soil damage caused by overuse. Social life for enslaved people dropped to inhumane levels, given that enslavers believed social interaction among enslaved people could lead to rebellion and insurrection due to several slave
Most notably, the growth of cities, environmental impact, changes in labor force pool, religious divide, class distinctions among middle and working class citizens, and increased protest movements. Although the Market Revolution had allowed for the expansion of markets and the erection of many factories, city growth was dismal at best as many
Imagine if, instead of paying for products you wanted with money, you traded or bartered for them. Also imagine if you lived on a farm and produced most of what you needed to live yourself. If the market revolution never took place, most of us might still be living on farms and trading with acquaintances for a few products we could not produce ourselves. The market revolution changed all this. Happening roughly between 1800 and the 1840s, the market revolution was a series of gradual transformations that began the process where the majority of Americans no longer lived in the countryside and worked as small yeoman farmers or skilled artisan workers, but instead lived in cities and worked in factories.
According to our book, the American System is an economic plan based on the idea that the federal government should encourage economic enterprise. The American System was stemmed from young Democratic-Republican who falsely supported Jefferson 's idea of a small federal government but actually preferred a large government. The goal of the new American System was to assist the united States in becoming self-sufficient economically, while spurring massive market growth throughout the nation. The leaders of this group were Henry Clay and John C. Calhoun. They believed that the federal government should encourage economic enterprise in three ways: first, the federal government needed to create roads and canals which would be considered internal
During the Era of Good Feelings, 19th century, the beginnings of a new way to manufacture and supply goods reached America and completely shifted its economy. Like the Industrial Revolution, the Market Revolution was a process that changed and shaped the way American citizens worked and spent their money. Shifting from a Jeffersonian vision - agrarian nation and independent farmers separated from the influence of the wealthy - to a Hamiltonian vision, which advocated for banks and factories, marked the beginning of the Market Revolution and the switch of a America to a manufacturing based economic society. The Market Revolution succeeded in boosting the economies in both the Northern and Midwestern states through the creation of new transportation networks, the American System, and organized manufacturing.

The Market Revolution brought numerous changes in the United States. The creation of factories meant that employees needed less expertise in order to get a job and there were more employment prospects for people. However, because of this new method of working, people's lifestyles are also altered. Many Americans were no longer attending church on a regular basis, and the new developments in technology and economy also caused cultural disruption. As a result, there was a decline in religion.
This also resulted in the rise of the middle class. Other than the expansion of industrialization and job opportunities, the US government was taking control of child labor and better working conditions for everyone. Kids under 14 years of age were working because of the cheap labor, resulting in dangerous work conditions. The government decided to mandate education to reduce child labor. Women's
The market Revolution enabled men to be able to become part of a higher class, they had more opportunities to make more money, but it also brought the aspect that there would be people who would end up at the bottom of the class system. The market Revolution also brought about the middle class in which men and women who worked day to day jobs could earn a wage that would help them support their families. Instead of growing and making everything for themselves, families began spending their earnings on products produced by other working men and women. Work moved from quality of products to quantity produced. There were no longer people who would spend hours upon hours making a quilt or sewing clothes but the fast production of far less quality.

Wood said "..no country in the Western world has ever undergone such massive changes in such a short period of time. The Revolution resembled the breaking of a dam, releasing thousands upon thousands of pent-up pressures. " The radicalism of the American Revolution was so influential that even impact to the world. United States spread the idea of equality and generate the dignity of democracy.

Transportation meant more interactions of people and information, but often had devastating effects due to the human folly of wanting to decrease time. Women in the work force increased the production rate, as well as a boom in the economy, but were often treated in inhumane conditions and regarded lowly. Banks allowed vast opportunities for the wealthy investors, but also ended up disabling the poor working force, especially in the depression. As such, while there were evident benefits to the market revolution that heavily boosted the economy and development of the country, the drawbacks still outweighed the positives. Death and people taking advantages of others led to the market revolution being a dark time in American history.
