Elie Wiesel's Night: Chapter Summary

His father has given up but Elie tries to convince him to move When an air raid alert drives everyone into the barracks, Eliezer leaves his father and falls deeply asleep. The morning, he begins to search for his father, but part of him thinks that he will be better off if he abandons his father and conserves his strength. However, he finds his father, who is very sick and unable to move. Elie brings him soup and coffee.

Chapter One: Introduction During the English Civil War, in the 1640s, the Earl of Clarendon came up with a novel wheeze: rather than allow those presumed to be parliamentarian enemies to claim the benefit of the rule of law, he would establish a prison on an island off the British shoreline. That way, he reasoned, they could be safely forgotten, buried along with their legal rights. When parliament later looked back on this dark chapter of British history, they passed the Habeas Corpus Act of 1679 to ensure that never again would an unpopular group of people be denied justice. Clarendon was impeached by the House of Commons and fled to France, where he died in exile.

Loss of Faith and Childhood Innocence Since it first came out in 1960, over 10 million copies of Night by Elie Wiesel have been sold; the moving story recounts the anecdote of a firsthand account of the Holocaust. Professor and author Ellen S. Fine comments that the book "[...] communicates the vision of a nightmare: the voyage from a familiar to unknown world, a son's perception of the slow death of his father and the spiritual death of himself" (48). It outlines the author as a teenager before and during the Holocaust, including his relationships, the horrors he witnesses, and his journey with faith.

I don’t think there is another quote out there that can better summarize life under Nazi rule. I think that this quote really gets the point across that if you see something terrible happening, and don’t try to stop it you’re just as bad as the person doing it. This really tells me that you can’t be afraid to speak up for something that is wrong, even if it means death. The quote mentions that if you stand by and lets all these bad things happen, that you are as guilty as the people doing them. I think that is very true, the counties who sat by and watched the holocaust happen are just as bad as the Nazis.

In the book Night, we the readers witness the hardships and struggles in Elie’s life during the traumatic holocaust. The events that take place in this story are unbearable and are thought to be demented in modern times. In the beginning Elie is shown as a normal teenage Jewish boy, but the events are so drastic that we the readers forget how he was like in the beginning. Changes were made to Elie during the book, whether they were minor or major. The changes generated from himself, the journey, and other people.

9. Chapter Nine Following his father’s death, Elie Wiesel continues to stay in Buchenwald for a number of months. Despite the length of his stay, he refuses to describe his life during the period, as he believed it wasn’t important. This was mainly because of the death of his father, and the fact that “nothing mattered to [him] anymore,” after his passing (113).

In the novel, “Night” Elie Wiesel communicates with the readers his thoughts and experiences during the Holocaust. Wiesel describes his fight for survival and journey questioning god’s justice, wanting an answer to why he would allow all these deaths to occur. His first time subjected into the concentration camp he felt fear, and was warned about the chimneys where the bodies were burned and turned into ashes. Despite being warned by an inmate about Auschwitz he stayed optimistic telling himself a human can’t possibly be that cruel to another human.

World War II had been raging for two years and was bout to enter Sighet. The Germans attempted to commit genocide on the 'lesser ' races, particularly Jews. Through the brutality witnessed, acts of selfishness, the death of his father, and the loss of his faith, Elie changed. Elie became a young man with a strong sense of mortality through it all. By the end of the war, Elie claimed to see himself as "A corpse contemplating me."

In the book Night by Elie Wiesel, Eliezer Wiesel narrates the legendary tale of what happened to him and his father during the Holocaust. In the introduction, Wiesel talks about how his village in Seghet was never worried about the war until it was too late. Wiesel’s village received advanced notice of the Germans, but the whole village ignored it. Throughout the entire account, Wiesel has many traits that are key to his survival in the concertation camps.

Through subtle and effective language, Wiesel is able to put into words the fearsome experiences he and his father went through in Auschwitz during the Holocaust. Imagine believing so strongly in something and then being let down, or thinking that you were wrong even to believe. In Night by Elie Wiesel, Elie felt as though he had lost his religion and belief in God. We learned how strong his beliefs were when he says,“I believed profoundly. During the day I studied the Talmud, and at night I ran to the synagogue to weep of the destruction of the Temple,” (Wiesel, 14).
