Many years before Jefferson became president, the Barbary states had sent pirates to attack and capture European and American ships, cargo, and sailors. They would then hold the crews for ransom and demanded large sums of money for safe passage. The US and European countries would routinely give into these demands because they knew it would cost less than war. Jefferson had opposed this from the beginning, so when he was president, he made it all change.

He did not follow Jefferson’s plan of Assimilation, rather he sought to remove Indians wholesale from their property and move them somewhere, “deemed unsuitable for white settlement. Jackson claimed his plans for separation were beneficial for Native Americans, without explaining why they couldn’t remain separate on their own land. Viciously uprooting Native Americans meant that the practices they had been carrying on for centuries were, for the most part, halted. Even after Native Americans had ceded land, Jefferson consistently broke those treaties, with the most blatant being the ratification of the Treaty of New Echota. In this treaty, he took the word of several unelected people of the Cherokee Nation as an agreement on behalf of all of them, because it fit his desires.

Jefferson wanted to stop the shipment of goods, war materials and other things during the time of Napoleonic Wars. Jefferson also hoped that the Embargo act would orevent any possible wars between the United States and other allied countries. The Louisiana Purchase was an outstanding change to the country, this is because it nearly doubled the size of the United States. This also encouraged independence and agrarianism because with the immense amount of new land supposedly every man could have a small farm. The purchase allowed men to become more independent because they could grow their own crop and be self sustaining.

President Jefferson is currently making attempts to solve the problem. His goal is to avoid any way with Britain and France. Seven months ago, Jefferson announced the Embargo Act. From then on, all trade with foreign countries is banned. No ships will leave or have left American waters.

Though the price for the territory was beyond generous, Jefferson felt that by purchasing the territory he would be going against his beliefs that the constitution should be followed word for word. The constitution said nothing of the president having the power to purchase land from another government, or to use money of the states for the same purpose (“the moral dilemma”). Another problem was once the land was purchased, there was a fear that it could have been a waste since they had no way to know the layout of the land, and what it would be useful for.

After aging out my years of adolescences I have notice how shallow and selfish people can be. A person will dodge a bad scenario if they don’t get the winning end of the stick, but eventually their going to need help themselves. “Giving to others without looking for personal gain” is the definition of being selfless. I believe humanity can gain selflessness. The movie, “Beauty and the Beast”, is one of my favorite moral stories.
