President Jefferson's Embargo Act

William Humphrey was a commissioner of the Federal Trade Commission whose term ended in 1938. President Franklin Roosevelt requested Humphrey’s resignation in 1933 to replace him with a commissioner whose views corresponded with the presidents. When Humphrey refused to resign, President Roosevelt fired him. The Federal Trade Commission Act of 1914 only allowed the president to remove commissioners for inefficiency, neglect of duty, or malfeasance in office. This case originated in the Court of Claims.

The British men gathered full control of the trading center present in the Americas, and created the Navigation Acts to help aid them in their tactics to take control over all trade within the Americas. The Navigation Acts were passed under a mercantilist system, and was used to regulate trade in a way that only benefitted the British economy. These acts restricted trade between England and its colonies to English or colonial ships, required certain colonial goods to pass through England before export, provided subsidies for the production of certain raw goods in the colonies, and banned colonial competition in large-scale manufacturing. This lowered the competition in the trading world for the British and caused the British to have a major surge in power, that greatly attributed to the growth of their rising empire. The British’s ambitious motives in the trading world help portray a way that the British took control of an important piece in the economy of all of the other nations present in the colonies in the time period, and shows another leading factor in the growth of the British empire.

The Interstate Commerce Act (ICA) took place on February 4, 1887, when the Senate and House of Representatives granted Congress the power to regulate interstate railroads. This act included all transactions across several states. The Railroad Industry began taking advantage of the public by overcharging farmers, small business owners, and city to city passengers. The Interstate Commerce Act of 1887 originally regulated shipping rates on the Railroad system, but later improved delivery of all kinds such as air travel, trucking, and shipping. The Railroad Industry’s unfair practices targeted the public with underhanded prices.

The Monroe Doctrine was a speech given in 1823 by James Monroe, the 5th president of the United States, to the U.S. Congress concerning European presence in the Western Hemisphere. Monroe was becoming continuously concerned about European influence in the region. While the primary audience for this message was Congress, the intended audience was all European powers, including Russia, and Latin America. The events in Latin America before and after the Spanish-American War will be used as an example of the imperial reach by the U.S. The United States, ironically, became an imperial power through its mission outlined in the Monroe Doctrine to end European colonialism and imperialism.

This embargo act was a response to the British attacks on the American Ships, and was passed by Congress forbidding any exports from the U.S. Jefferson’s plan was to weaken Britain and France, but despite those good intentions, it failed and left the American economy struggling. The Embargo Act resulted in the first economic depression, and began to hurt New England the worst, but allowed manufacturing to increase. The act “drove exports down from $108 million in 1807 to $22 million in 1808,”(A.Y. Ch. 7). This caused it to be repealed 15 months later, but left patriots with resentment against the British.

Henry Clay believed that the future success of the Americas was to be dictated by the effectiveness of “The American System”. After the war of 1812, the United States was flooded with imports from Great Britain. Coffee, tea, textiles, sugar, and many other items were delivered to American ports by multiple British manufacturers as they unloaded their inventories into the American market. While these products helped fulfill the stifled demand for inexpensive consumer goods, they undermined domestic manufacturing in America. In order to generate more revenue, the United States began by putting in place high tariffs to help protect its domestic industries.

The goal of our nation is to continue to prosper, and to keep the American virtue. War would only tear this nation apart. The economy, as well as the people would suffer, and the nation would fall, and struggle to recover once again. Therefore, I am against declaring war on Great Britain. War has unpredictable outcomes, that could either ruin a nation, or just end further conflict.

The Monroe Doctrine was written by Secretary of State John Quincy Adams and President James Monroe in 1823. It was written in response to Monroe’s concerns about Spain reclaiming sovereignty in the Western Hemisphere. It was a statement on foreign policy that pledged that the United States would oppose attempts by European states to extend their political control into the Western Hemisphere. Monroe presented the document to Congress in December 1823. Some say that this doctrine should be called the Jefferson Doctrine as opposed to the Monroe Doctrine because Jefferson strongly influenced Monroe.

Jefferson’s dilemma in the Louisiana Purchase In April of 1803 Thomas Jefferson was faced with many moral dilemmas in the process of buying the Louisiana territory. Though the price for the territory was beyond generous, Jefferson felt that by purchasing the territory he would be going against his beliefs that the constitution should be followed word for word. The constitution said nothing of the president having the power to purchase land from another government, or to use money of the states for the same purpose (“the moral dilemma”). Another problem was once the land was purchased, there was a fear that it could have been a waste since they had no way to know the layout of the land, and what it would be useful for.

Trade partners is an agreement made by two or more parties that agrees to trade certain items or info to each other. Since the U.S had many trade partners, there was a stable system. Many nations would ship their items to others as that’s the only way to send their items. (as shown in Map 1) Now skipping some years, the Barbary Pirates then starts attacking cargo ships and would steal millions of dollars worth of items. The Barbary Pirates mostly come from North Africa and they mainly seek money and targets non-believers on Jihad and Christians.
