America is well known as the land of opportunity for many people who dream about having a better life and wanting to attain their American Dreams as their ancestors once did, but are everyone given that equal right to each opportunity? According to the Cambridge English Dictionary, equal opportunity is defined as “the principle of treating all people the same, and not being influenced by a person’s sex, race, religion, etc”. Therefore in my opinion, I do not think America is really the land of opportunity for all people equally. As mentioned in the Declaration of Independence, every American is entitled to the rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness to establish equality, but society has taken away our rights. In the world today, many Americans have …show more content…
According to the article “America, though Challenged, still the land of Opportunity,” states “The presence of opportunities may influence an individual’s prospects for the future, but the culture of a family or community affects the extent to which the individual takes advantage of those opportunities” (DeMint, 2014). DeMint’s raised by his mother and despite of their economical struggle, she always worked hard for everything they had which showed him the value of work and the responsibilities that come along with it. Furthermore, in the reading “America- The Land of Opportunity,” states “Today we seem to have a struggling generation of young people who do not have good jobs, heath insurance, pensions, houses or hope” (Ayres, 2014). Many individuals thought that if you graduated and worked hard it would be easy to get ahead, but this is not the case. The newer generations are having a hard time finding jobs that pay well and have benefits whereas, generations before us could find a good job as soon as they graduated high school. Nowadays, in order to get a decent job a high school and college degree is a
The chapter “Nickel and Dimed” discuss how unskilled workers are living in the modern society of America. They live by hope and want to live properly like others. However, it may be a dream for them because they already know their wages are always very low.
In the poem “America” by Tony Hoagland, the author discussed the American lifestyle, and the culture presently in his own perspective and opinion. I agree with his opinion about the people in America, and the atrocious reality that we are living in today. This present reality that Hoagland addressed reflects my view and my perspective not just about the people who lives in America, but innumerable people that lives on Earth. Hoagland, not just criticized the lifestyle and the way Americans are living, but also the materialism that exists in most of the people.
America is one of the richest and safest place in the whole wide world. I was born in Egypt and came to California when I was 10 years old, I love it here. The reason I came to America was because of safety, but now that a lot of people have weapons it 's not as safe anymore. We should make a law about limiting people’s weapons and only people who actually need it shall have it.
The Bernie Sanders campaign’s “America” ad, featuring a homonymous Simon and Garfunkel song, is undoubtedly a positive ad, filled with warmth, hope and enthusiasm. The minute-long advertisement switches focus from the candidate to the voters, or the American people. Using classic American images, a familiar folk-style soundtrack and footage of children and family, “America” appeals to optimism and quaint patriotism, especially those of Iowans who are the primary target of the ad. The ad opens with the shot of a snowy day, with wind turbines in the background. The image brings viewers Iowa to relate whatever else happens in the rest of the ad, since Iowa is one of the “top states for installed wind capacity.”
College takes around 4 years for most, sometimes more, and those years could be years of making money. Years spent in college could be years spent racking up debt for a future that will never exist. A multitude of college graduates don’t actually have a career in the field that they majored in, but still end up in service jobs. Consequently, 57% of 18 to 34 year olds who are not in school and don’t have a bachelor 's degree say they prefer to work and make money rather than go to school (Source F). These high school graduates do not desire to collect debt during their prime working years and would rather find work using their hands.
Our school systems these days are so unbelievably expensive and so hard to afford. Even if you do pay for schools most young adults are paying off there school loans until there late 60's! Most jobs won't even except you if you have a poor
When I was six years old, living in Ethiopia, my dad won an American green card visa lottery among 53,000 people. Although it was exciting news, family members were discouraged because my dad could not afford the visa processing and traveling expense. However, he found a sponsor in Seattle, which allowed him to settle in America. As soon as he found a good house and a stable job, he started the process for me and my family. Multiple errors and obstacles delayed our processing for five years.

America is known as “The Land of Opportunity” and it established the concept of the American Dream in the 1900’s. The fight for this dream was prevalent even before it was given a name in 1930. The founding fathers wrote this belief into the constitution with the words “All Americans are created equal and endowed by their creator with certain inalienable rights. Among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” .Some Americans believe that the American Dream can still be obtained in the 21st Century with hard work and perservance ; however, a majority of the American population among race gender and class has a different point of view on what America still provides to their citizens because economic insta8bility and lack of equal opportunity.
Author Robert McKinnon in his work, “Moving Up: The Truth about Getting Ahead in America” has discussed factors that affect our chances of achieving the American Dream. In the article, "Moving Up: The Truth about Getting Ahead in America" Robert McKinnon argues that “it is easier to stay at the top then it is to rise from the bottom.” Throughout the article McKinnon illustrates the three most important factors when it comes to moving up in the social class to achieve the American Dream this includes: mobility, hard work, and the fate of our birth. Although McKinnon proved all these factors to be vital when it comes to living the American Dream, I believe that hard work is the most important when it comes to achieving the American Dream.
What is America all about? What is America defined as? America is more than just its geographical boundaries. To everyone in the world, America stands for something. People believe in America.
When you ask a non American “What does America mean to you?” , they will more often than not answer with hamburgers, obesity, NFL and Reality TV. That is okay because who doesn 't love hamburgers and football filled Sundays, who doesn 't love watching silly reality TV shows and who doesn 't love a cheat day every once in awhile? Those people are judging a book by its cover and fortunately for me… well my thoughts about America are quite different. When an individual asks me “What does America mean to you?”
The American Dream begins with an affordable living arrangement and a good job, but with remorse, these two pieces are not connecting (Thompson, 2014). A college graduate can expect expensive housing with a job not reflective of the high housing price. In an article published in The Atlantic, “Why it’s So Hard for Millennials to Find a Place to Live and Work” Derek Thompson talks about the inequality between upward mobility and the housing market. For example, Dayton has one of the most affordable housing markets in the United States, however unlike California there is no social mobility (Thompson, 2014). The American dream is different for everyone and changes the course of action an individual may take.
All nations at one point have experienced a few different types of challenges in their history. America suffered through plenty of challenges throughout its history that have been overcome. America has been through many obstacles, but they were only realized after the problem was solved or confronted. These challenges include slavery, women’s rights, tyrants, terrorists, and innumerable more. Though confronted with challenges throughout America’s history, the main three obstacles in America today is the divisions between the public, sensitivity of some individuals, and sense of entitlement among some of the youth.
America, the land of the free, does this reign true after the years of war and amendments to the Constitution that have been implemented? Our nation has gone through so many changes. Is there even a resemblance to the original system the framers of the Constitution envisioned? The majority of the Constitution has remained constant over the years, and those changes that have been made were for the amelioration of the country.
