Mental health is a state of psychological well-being. According to World Health Organization (WHO) mental health includes "subjective well-being, perceived self-efficacy, autonomy, competence, intergenerational dependence, and self-actualization of one's intellectual and emotional potential, among others." (Organization, WHO 2001) However, cultural differences, race, ethnicity, personal background, subjective assessment, and socioeconomic status all affect how mental health is defined. This variation in definitions of mental health between different sects of our society further causes drift in methods of treatment, and may cause the burden of mental health to be greater on some cultures.

Mental health is a critical aspect of overall health, and the treatment of mental health patients has been a challenge for healthcare providers worldwide. Traditionally, mental health patients were institutionalized in psychiatric hospitals, but this approach has been criticized for various reasons, including the isolation of patients from their communities and the stigmatization of mental illness. As a result, there has been a growing trend towards treating mental health patients within the community. Treating mental health patients within the community has many advantages. Firstly, it allows patients to receive treatment while remaining within their social and familial support structures.
The public system for mental health treatment functions more as a crisis management system that aims to solve problems over the long term. For example, a man in crisis is brought back to a hospital by the Mobile Crisis Intervention Team (MCIT), only days after he had been discharged from two weeks of hospital treatment. The Mental Health Act policy prohibits psychiatric facilities from holding people against their will unless a strict set of requirements are met. Having this in the Mental Health Act, hospitals become a revolving door for mental health treatment: they respond and help, but often do not effectively treat patients for long-term improvement. In 1963 the More of the Mind policy deinstitutionalization process began in Canada, which came from the Canadian Mental Health Association’s.

Safe medication administration is a big aspect of nursing care, because if medications aren’t given safely, then it can lead to some serious adverse effects to the patients. There are many things that can go wrong, and that’s why nurses have to be very careful when handling and giving medications. Nurses can make mistakes, and give the wrong med, give it to the wrong person, or even give too much or too little of the drug. Careful medication administration can lead to not making big mistakes that can lead to hurting others. “Medication Administration is a complex multistep process that encompasses prescribing, transcribing, dispensing, and administering drugs and monitoring patient response.”
From the ideas and techniques that Mrs. Perez used, I realized how these interviews could be helpful if utilized and applied in the proper way. To me, this assignment was the best and it helped me further my development and growth as a future mental health counselor. The most interesting and educative aspect of this interview was how Mrs. Perez applied most of the counseling techniques, such motivational stage that we have been taught in class. Aspects such as paraphrasing the words of your clients, tone, and facial expressions are critical in a counseling session and students always overlook these techniques. The way Mrs. Perez employed according to her explanation was excellent and her ideas justified the importance of such points in any counseling session.

I have chosen to explore mental health for the critical assignment. Most people are not familiar with the vast array of mental illnesses that people struggle with on a daily basis. Being able to identify a mental illness or disorder, can better help people to understand and seek the attention necessary for improving one’s overall health. Mental illness can affect anyone; family members, friends, co-workers, and even children. Oftentimes people are embarrassed to talk about it or they may not even know they are suffering from it, which makes it hard to know who is going through it.
