URBAN MENTAL HEALTH Urbanization being defined as the increase in the number of cities and urban population, is not only a demographic movement but also includes, social, economic and psychological changes that constitute the demographic movement. It is a process that leads to the growth of cities due to industrialization and economic development. The rapid increase in urban population worldwide is one among the important global health issues of the 21st century. In India approximately 28% of the India’s population lives in cities and this is expected to increase to 41% by the year 2020 (UN World Urbanization Prospects 2008). Urbanization affects mental health through the influence of increased stressors and factors such as overcrowded and …show more content…
These are: diagnosis &early intervention; rational use of treatment techniques; continuity of care; wide range of services; consumer involvement; partnership with families; involvement of the local community; and integration into primary health care. The idea of community-based mental health care is a global approach rather than an organizational solution. Community-based care means that the large majority of patients requiring mental health care should have the possibility of being treated at community level. Mental health care should not only be local and accessible, but should also be able to address the multiple needs of individuals. Community-based care (unlike hospital-based care) is able to identify resources and create healthy alliances that would otherwise remain hidden and …show more content…
Early intervention is fundamental in preventing progress towards a full-blown disease, in controlling symptoms and improving outcomes. The importance of early intervention is highlighted by the following example. • In schizophrenia, the duration of untreated psychosis is proving to be important. Delays in treatment are likely to result in poorer outcomes. The appropriate treatment of mental disorders implies the rational use of pharmacological, psychological and psychosocial interventions in a clinically meaningful, balanced, and well-integrated way.. CONTINUITY OF CARE: Some mental and behavioral disorders follow a chronic course. The needs of patients and their families are complex and changing, and continuity of care is important. Some of the measures to ensure continuity of care include: • special clinics for groups of patients with the same diagnosis or
Though Dr. Farmer mentioned many interesting topics, I would like to first discuss about how important it is for the community-based healthcare services to work together with an institutionalized health care services. According to Maurer and Smith,
BayCare’s hospitals behavioral health case management program is committed to providing quality, patient-centered healthcare while ensuring that the most efficient care is being provided to the patient. BayCare uses the philosophy of individual patient empowerment and concept the ability of a patient to recover through support, education and self-awareness of the treatment needed to assist with the healing. “Case management is a global construct that consists of several key dimensions, which include extent of case management coverage, the degree of management of the referral process, and the location of case management activity.” (Alexander, 2007) Case management programs have a diverse staff the all fork towards the common goal of treating
In 2010, President Barrack Obama signed the health care reform into law, the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Community-Based Collaborative Care Network Program is a part of the ACA which emphasizes primary care, funds community health initiatives, and promotes quality care for more coverage for those uninsured in the U.S. and is more cost-effective to generate billions of dollars in savings for the United States budget. Policy makers and public issues and concerns are growing on cost of health care, affordability and accessibility of health care, health care quality, development of sustainable solutions to health care problems, and promoting personal and community responsibility for health. Future nurses must be prepared to address today’s health
With that said, some patients need continuing access to their lives for a variety of reasons. If ongoing employment is at risk, an outpatient treatment program could be used to allow the patient to handle work matters. If the patient lacks the resources for childcare, it could be necessary to allow for outpatient care for the sake of the family unit. At all times, the decision-making process related to which type of treatment methodology will be best should rest with professional counselors and clinicians. They are better prepared to assess the situation and determine whether a patient can handle the responsibility of committing to an outpatient treatment

Patients and their family members should be preferably educated by the community mental health nurse about the illness, its course, and prognosis as well as the efficacy, the potential side effects and costs of various drugs. Other family interventions should include support, problem-solving training and crisis intervention. There was robust and consistent evidence that there was a decrease in the risk of relapse at the end of treatment and up to 12 months following treatment. Moreover, it also reduced hospital admission during treatment and the severity of symptoms both during and up to 24 months following the intervention. (NICE, 2014)
The research done applies to urban cities across the globe. The study was conducted to
This assignment will provide evidence and knowledge of understanding the concept of care based on a service user who has a long term condition of mental health and was diagnosed of severe Depression with Psychosis. In order to maintain confidentiality a pseudonym has been used throughout this essay to comply with the Data Protection Act 1998 (last modified date June 2011) and the NMC code of confidentiality (2015). I will also reflect and evaluate my own performance as a learner and use the key characteristic of a lone worker in the community. In addition I would discuss how that particular intervention has helped me to understand my own learning needs and also when referring the patient to recommend interventions for reducing risk of depression, to create awareness on how to offer emotional and psychological supports to patient living with depression. It is part of our role as health care professional to safeguard our patients and educate them on the risks involved if they have unhealthy lifestyles and to promote healthy living based on evidence based practice.

Urbanization To what extent is urbanization a critical driver of social instability, failure of infrastructure, water crises & the spread of infectious diseases? Urbanization is basically the gradual increase in the proportion of people living in the urban areas or a specific area, and the ways in how the society adapts to it. Urbanization can be a good impact to a country and has the ability to improve its economy and the life of people but it also has the ability to destroy the country and the life of all the people that exist there. GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE:
Patients are medically stable, no intravenous ' (IVs) or other acute medical problems. As soon as a patient is stabilized, he/she is moved along the continuum of care to outpatient services. (6) Methods Used to Assess Needs: All patients admitted to inpatient psychiatric services receive a nursing, physician, and social work assessment. Nurse Practitioner assessment is based on the medical needs of the patient and works in collaboration with the patient to provide assessment and reassessment and contribute to the interdisciplinary treatment plan. All disciplines participate in establishing living wills and “do not resuscitate” orders.
“Adequate treatment requires a combination of pharmacotherapy and various psychosocial interventions that target the child’s specific difficulties” (PSYCHOSIS IN CHILDHOOD AND ITS MANAGEMENT, 2002). Pharmacotherapy is medical treatment by the means of using pharmaceutical drugs. This is a very effective way to solve this disorder because it helps the children cope with it. “Interventions targeted at improving family functioning, problem solving, communication skills, and relapse prevention have been shown to decrease relapse rates in adults” (PSYCHOSIS IN CHILDHOOD AND ITS MANAGEMENT, 2002). These interventions usually include both of the parents and the child.
Mental health institutions promote the use of a holistic care more than that of a strictly medical hospital does. The ideas of Watson, though mostly unintentional, can be seen in the practice of mental health professionals. Treatment in mental health practices gives importance to mind, body, and spirit when client care is involved. This is done to improve the healing process for each individual and to improve their own understanding of him or herself.
The second on is group residential communities. This type of community makes the setting very easy for the attending individual thanks to its family-like environment. In this environment they work on repairing a person’s self-esteem, they help them develop relationships/ friendships, they help them build skills and help to manage the symptoms that come with their mental health. Living in a facility like this is a common occurrence to be long-term. Treatments are by choice and take place off-site.
Social and physical disorder in urban neighbourhoods can, if neglected, lead to serious depression. The social distribution of stress with individuals of lower socioeconomic status tends to reside in impoverished neighbourhoods. In Hamilton, Ontario, a McMaster University study found that there is a 21-year difference in life expectancy between the wealthiest and poorest residents. Money may not be able to buy happiness, but it ensures the ability to provide proper food to eat, access to health care, and a safe place to live and raise a family. Lack of access to proper health care, food, and poor living conditions, due to low income, put these individuals are at risk for mental and physical health problems.
