One of the biggest issues I feel the young people of, not only today, but for a while now, face is childhood obesity. However, in the more recent years I feel as if it has continued to get worse. With all the new technology that comes out each year and the decrease in the amount of work it takes to control and operate these gadgets, children have no reason to move around when they are being entertained on the couch all day. We need to get young people out and moving, I believe it is essential to have the youth participating in at least one sport and encourage them to go outside to play, it doesn’t have to be an all-day thing, but if you can manage to get them out of the house for at least an hour a day that is better than none at all. Founded in 1994, by Dr. C Everett Koop. He wanted to raise awareness of obesity as a health issue and to provide responsible information on weight management through dietary and lifestyle change. Shape Up America! is a not for profit organization dedicated to raising awareness of obesity as a health issue and to providing responsible information on healthy weight management. On their website they have a number of various resources that can be used by both children and adults in order to discover more about several lifestyle choices. From cookbooks to fitness plans that can be completed as a family and even calculators to determine your physical activity as well as your estimated calories to eat per day depending on whether your goal is to gain, lose, or maintain your current weight. This organization is dedicated to helping everyday people such as ourselves become educated on how to make appropriate lifestyle choices. Therefore, if we, as leaders, can understand how to make these choices and we encourage young people to do the same then we can begin to slow this continuing increase in childhood
As Woolston (2015) clearly conveyed, “Fatty, unbalanced, and oversized: That, in a nutshell, is the American diet.” With an escalation in fast food restaurants numbers, health food prices, and portion sizes, the typical American diet relics as a death sentence, encompassing fat, cholesterol, and sodium filled meals. Americans typically consume food that occurs quick and inexpensive, not comprehending the effect that this food deposits on their health. Apprehending the impact that the American diet places on health, the “Dietary Guidelines for Americans" serves as a guideline to help Americans rid of their old habits, reaching towards a healthy diet and weight.
It’s to no surprise that obesity is an epidemic in America and is continuing to grow at an alarming rate. Statistics say that more than one-third (34.9% or 78.6 million) of U.S. adults are obese and being overweight is harming the nation by worsening the health burden, raising health costs, and undermining productivity (Greenhalgh). Sadly the responsibility for this epidemic is mostly put on Blacks and Latinos, who have the highest percentage of obesity. Latinos more so have sparked this for concern due to their large numbers in the United States and something must be done about this to help bring down these numbers and help the overall population’s health. Latino Obesity Epidemic Because Latino’s make up a huge number in the United States
Strengthening Community Actions: Communities power to identify and implement actions directly addressing the healthy lifestyles of individuals plays a major role. Students and teachers picked fruits and vegetables from the garden that were taken home in order to create a healthy meal. The Special Education class utilized this garden in order to create fresh salsa. Because of this success, our project was then selected to present at the FMEC conference in Washington, D.C. Currently, I am working on a fitness project for students that will help their overall well-being through a variety of unique exercise lessons and healthy eating guidelines. These exercises include Zumba, Yoga, Kettlebell, and Aquatic Workouts.
Thesis and Questions There are many primary causes of obesity in youth, but I argue the lack of physical activity and the abundance of unhealthy foods around our youth has caused obesity to grow locally. How can we, as Athletic Trainers, promote healthier eating to youth around North Carolina? In what ways can we get more youth to participate in physical activities on a regular
Obesity Epidemic in America Americans in the United States are gaining more weight at a rapid pace which eventually leads to a high chance of becoming or being obese. The World Health Organization defines obesity as the “abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that presents a risk to health”. (WHO, 2012). This trend dramatic has become known as the obesity epidemic as it continues to sweep the states. Centers of Disease Control conducted studies and results showed that since 1980, one third of our adult population has become overweight.
Obesity is an ever-growing epidemic in the United States. Weights have been rising in the United States throughout the twentieth century, but the rise in obesity since 1980 is fundamentally different from past changes. (Cutler, Glaeser and Shapiro) Though it is not entirely clear what is to blame many scientists and researchers have a theory. The rise of obesity in the U.S. can be contributed to high priced fruits and vegetables, low costing processed foods, widespread increase in poverty, and a sedentary lifestyle.
My purpose of writing this rhetorical situation is to inform. I hope to inform the readers about the drastic increase of childhood obesity and diabetes within America’s population. I will analyze this topic, separate it into the two types of obesity, and tell how those are affecting the population. I will also discuss the factors that are contributing to obesity and how both type 1 and 2 diabetes rates within children are increasing every year. I will be sure to discuss how the reader can help to decrease these rates and what America needs to do as a whole to change the youth population.
Three things people can do to get rid of obesity is to have better physical education in school, tax unhealthy food higher, and have classes that can teach students how to make food. Schools should give better physical education classes that are longer and have activities that everyone likes. First, Al
Obesity is an epidemic in the United States that has risen steadily over the last 30 years. Obesity effects all populations in the US, from young and old to people with disabilities. . government and school districts to enforce state school nutrition laws in order to support elementary students’ physical and mental health, and to effectively improve elementary students’ standardized test scores. Every school year, school leaders gather at the faculty meeting to discuss plans to change all of elementary students’ physical bodies and minds. School leaders also need to conduct more research and rely on helpful resources in order to educate elementary students about nourishment and exercise. Anderson then suggests “a push to combat childhood obesity, [and enforce] the Hunger-Free Kids Act” (2). This new, enforced law, creates an effect that Anderson persuades elementary students to get out of their comfort zone and participate in fitness-based activities, such as running on the treadmill, performing yoga poses, and doing push-ups for muscle endurance.
The rhetorical strategies mentioned organized the evidence of childhood obesity, fused the facts into a sequence, and clustered information for conveying the argument for change. As an organization they created a comprehensive list of information for the purpose of attracting parents and Club staff to join in on the effort. Moreover, it takes an entire organization to make change and not small sectors. The national Boys and Girls Club branch has called for the various club’s encouragement and participation and is now stepping towards organizational strategies. As a non-profit organization the Boys and Girls Club has established guidelines under the Partnership for a Healthier America/Let’s Move program.
Researchers have found another cause for childhood obesity, the school lunch. In fact, school lunches have gotten so bad that they’re impacting today’s obesity rates. A survey taken from 1973 to 1974 compared to a survey taken in 2003 to 2004 showed that school-aged children jumped from 4% to a disturbing 18.8%, that's a 14.8% jump from over the years. Let's move is a program launched by the First Lady of the united states dedicated to solving
