Essay On The Socs In S. E. Hilton's The Outsiders

“Things are rough all over” (Hinton, 35) Here, Cherry helps PonyBoy realize that they all, everyone, has problems. Similarly to Ponyboy and Cherry’s incident, another example of Ponyboy realizing that the Socs are human is his encounter with Randy.

In the story The Outsiders the two main groups who are figuratively and literally on the opposites sides of town, the East side and the West side where the prime meridian of the city separates the Greasers and the Socs. When Pony and Johnny are at the movies and stop Dallas Winston from annoying the two Soc girls in front of them, the girls start to talk them and the boys realize that Socs aren’t very different from Greasers, besides the slicked back hair and the fancy blue Mustangs.

Because of some discussions he had with a few of the Socs, he changes his opinion Recognizing that the Socs are just people after all, Pony’s final opinion is that they have problems too. Pony’s opening opinion of the Socs does not show them in good light. Initially, at the opening of the novel, Ponyboy does not like the Socs. To start, the Socs have everything.

Then there 's the Greasers, who live poorly and get blamed for most of the things that go down in the city. Ponyboy, and Johnny, two Greasers, that at first, clang to the fact that they hated Socs. All they wanted to do was fight the other gang to look tough and earn respect. In the beginning of the story, Ponyboy wishes he looked tough.

The Soc's kept harassing the boys and they knew a fight was about to happen. So, Jonny reached into back pocket to make sure he still had the switchblade they were lucky he had. Ponyboy clearly said something that the Soc's didn't like and they went after them. As a couple of the Soc's were kicking and beating Jonny, the remaining Soc's were trying to drown Ponyboy. He was struggling but managed to get loose.

As they are walking to grab snacks, Cherry is telling Ponyboy that not all Socs are bad; Just like not all greasers are bad. “‘That’s like saying all you greasers are like Dallas Winston. I’ll Bet he’s jumped a few people.’ I digested that. It was true.

Ponyboy believed that the only good reason to fight was self-defence, as he realized that violence did not solve issues and only created more problems. This realization demonstrates Ponyboy's increased maturity and empathy toward others as he begins to see the world from a better perspective. The Greasers are portrayed as poor hoodlums who live on the east side of the city and have to earn a living, while the Socs are seen as wealthy, privileged, rich kids who drive Mustangs, throw beer blasts, and live on the west side of the city. One of the ways Pony changed was how he thought about the Socs. In the beginning of the book, he hated the Socs and thought they were all the same: rich jerks who had a perfect life and liked to pick on them. He didn’t think about their problems, their own feelings and actions, or any similarities to greasers. He essentially saw them as another species. As the story progressed, he saw Socs each as their own person and judged them as such.

One night Ponyboy Johnny and Dallas decided to go to the drive through movies. The boys sneak into the movies and being the trouble Dallas starts messing with these two Socs girls. Socs are kids who lived on the nicer side of town. They are the popular kids in school and they are more wealthy then the Greasers. Making the two fight and not get along.

Throughout the novel we see the Greasers and the Soc in constant conflict, fighting and rumbling for gang dominance. Ponyboy is greatly affected by this and is already questioning the point of violence. Close to the end of the text the Greasers and the Socs plan a rumble to occur one night. Before the fight, Ponyboy meets Randy Anderson (a Soc) at the Tasty Freeze Diner where they have a conversation. Ponyboy realises that Randy is, “not going to show at the rumble” and that he is, “sick of rumbles because they don't do any good.”

Ponyboy’s feelings and attitude towards the Socs changes in many different ways throughout the novel. His initial attitude towards the Socs was all about looking cool and tuff all the time. It was how things were. The forces behind his change in attitude are the softer sides of the Socs. His final attitude towards the Socs were softened, even though his gang still hate them.

You first start to see a slight change in Ponyboy’s point of view when he meets Cherry (Sherri) Valance, furthermore when he speaks to Randy in the car, as well as when he reads Johnny's letter. Ponyboy’s point of view changes when he gets jumped by the Socs and when he first meets Cherry. It is through these events

All of Pony’s greaser gang rescues him and chases the Socs away. Pony is okay, but shaken up. Later in the novel, Pony, Johnny, and Dally go to the Nightly double and meet Cherry Valance and Marcia. It, for the most part, goes well.

He also finds a way of how to finish the gang that was taking place from many tima.
