Why college athletes should get paid Eighty-Six percent of college athletes are below the poverty line and end up going into debt after school. Most college athletes will not have time to go to classes, practice for their sport, and spend time working at a job. This leads to them having to take out loans and going into debt. So if colleges added a way for athletes to get paid while practicing it would be very beneficial. College athletes deserve to be paid because they invest time and effort, risk injuries, and do most of the advertising for their sport. Since student athletes are considered just students, colleges are not legally obligated to pay the athletes for their work or cover any expenses if they get injured while playing their sport. This is not true because only full ride scholarships cover all college expenses and these scholarships are only offered to the best. Most of the other scholarships don't fully cover expenses and some players may not even get a scholarship. “Students that show the top level of athletic prowess can earn full ride scholarships”(“Full Ride Scholarships: What They Are and How They Work”). This quote shows that it is very difficult to receive a full ride scholarship or any scholarship. There are many athletes that go into debt because they couldn't afford college and they will have to pay it later.
