Division one college athletics, especially basketball and football, are some of the most popular events in the country. In 2017, the College Football Playoff Championship game was the tenth-most viewed television program in the U.S. at 24.42 million total viewers, and the NCAA Men’s basketball championship game was the thirteenth-most at 23.01 million total viewers (Mitchell). This means that college sports generate large amounts at money from television ratings and exposure. Lots of money is also made by colleges from merchandise sold due to recognition gained by their sports teams. Because of this, many people believe that college athletes should be paid to play their sports. At first, this thought seems like it could be a good idea, but when one takes a more detailed look at the subject, it is apparent that this could never work. After all, colleges are founded with the purpose of educating people. The first concern with a college should not be sports, it should be education, no matter how much money they make off of athletics. So with this in mind, why would you give extra money to athletes instead of students? Many division one student athletes already receive full-ride scholarships that cover all of their college-related costs even though they are less qualified academically than many other students who are not athletes. Being a college athletes take full time dedication and participation in regular classes. When you have the privilege of attending such universities, and colleges you are only representing the bests. That means, when you graduate, you will have of the best support and scholarships that you can possibly achieve. This situation mostly only applies to the students who attend the fanciest universities, and colleges. Some scholarships may seem like a lot money, but cover only the mysterious, housing, tuition, fees, meal-plan, multiple hundred-dollars textbooks and unknown fees.
College athletes may forget that their main purpose at school is to learn and study, not to receive money. Finally, if you pay college athletes it would take money away from college budgets that could be used to invest in research, to hire better staff, or to renovate facilities and technology. Therefore many college athletes are forced to pay out of pocket for certain items not covered on scholarship such as clothes, food, and gas. This is hard for many college athletes since themselves or their parents do not have the money for the extra items. A selected few athletes will get a chance to bring their family out of poverty and make a great living in either the NBA or the NFL. But for the not so lucky ones that end their careers at the collegiate level they should receive some money in order to pay for the expenses that any college student would need to since they do not simply have the time to get a part time job while enrolled in college and participating in their specific sport. Whether it is during the brisk Saturdays of fall watching the gridiron, or during the spring where the best in basketball compete for the title of the best, College Athletics is iconic for our nation. They provide relief from daily life, something to look forward to, and serve as a gathering point for friends and family to enjoy each-others company. With all college sports give back to the people, many have wondered if the athletes which make it all possible should be paid. Some argue that college athletes should remain amateurs, as that makes the unique spirit of the game different than the current pro leagues.
College sports collect millions of dollars each year:Approximately around 40 million dollars a year, states and universities make. You would think that the amount of money that is made would get split between the franchises ,students and schools but unfortunately the students that play receive none of it. Theres many discussions on if college athletes should or should not get paid and because they already receive scholarships then they shouldn 't get paid. Scholarships in itself is “around 25,000-30,000 per year for example a student who 's division 1 thats over 100,000 for 4 years of college(Hartnett 1)”. So if college athletes would start getting paid then they shouldn 't get any scholarships and they would just have to pay for it with the money they are receiving.

Athletes should be able to receive a portion of the money that comes from merchandise with their image. Finally, they and are not offered medical or death insurance. Allowing these students to be paid can help benefit their future sports and academic career. During a regular sports season, college athletes are focused on practice and school because of this they don’t have the time to be able to get a regular job to make money of their own. March Madness, an end of season tournament for College Basketball, is televised for three weeks and was viewed by 10.7 million people in 2022. This is the reason that $3.1 billion was spent on sports betting in March and April of 2022. Yet up until the NCAA v Alston court case in 2021, not one off the participating players was getting paid for playing college basketball. Is this fair?
The NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) had total revenue of nearly $1 billion during its 2014 fiscal year, according to an audited financial statement. Over the past decades, the popularity in America for college athletics has grown exponentially. Therefore, the amount of money colleges make from college sports can be immensely lucrative. The debate is college athletes receive athletic scholarships but should they be compensated beyond that.
14 December 2022 Title College Athletes Should Get Paid In 2017 (the most recent year i found ), the NCAA recorded $1.07 billion in revenue. This is a ton of money and athletes do not get a cent of it. These athletes basically have a full time job with college sports between their classes homework and all the team practices games and workouts that their sport requires.
On top of a scholarship, student athletes are also provided with many free things such as game tickets, apparel and equipment. Although scholarships take off a lot of the cost to go to college, they aren’t enough on their own. Most scholarships are not full ride and students are left to pay some school fines. Student athletes need an income to help pay the extra money they owe that the scholarship doesn’t pay for, and also so that they have some money when they come out of college. Paying college athletes is a way to encourage students to play sports.
If colleges began to pay their athletes, then they could build a bad reputation for being mercenary and lose their educational reputation If they are allowed to play, then it can be financially detrimental to the college because there are many flaws in the system. College athletes have worked hard to be on their universities’ sports teams. But with money involved most of the athletes would work extra hard. For instance the article, “3 Reasons Why College Athletes Should Be Paid,” states, “When you pay student-athletes a share of what they contribute to the college sports programs, they’ll want to work harder and do better. Like you would work harder at a job you get paid for, student-athletes will work harder during practices and games.” This would be a “win-win,” situation for all universities because most likely, by working harder, college athletes would generate more money for the universities, along with more money for themselves.
