The movie Capote (2005) posed many ethical issues in relation to the way qualitative information was conducted. The first of which being the study, or research design, was not approved or monitored by a review board, ethics board or review committees. Capote read about a murder that had occurred in a small town in Kansas and came up with the idea to write about it. There was no informed consent shared with members of the community that he and Harper Lee spoke with regarding the murders. I do not believe that many members of the community were even aware that he was working on a writing, and felt he was just a concerned citizen. Participants in the study were not subject to any physical harm, discomfort or psychological distress during the research. Towns people were grieving the loss of community members and openly spoke about what they knew to have happened, and shared their losses with Capote and Lee in a casual conversation format. Eventually, Capote does question Perry Smith about the night of the murders, and physical distress does come through in reliving what had happened. I do believe beneficence was withheld throughout the research phase of Capote’s writing. While watching the movie I do not believe there were any major risks associated with the research being …show more content…

Arthur Miller was the author of the Crucible who wrote this in 1953 in response to the second red scare of communism in the United States. He used the Salem Witch Trials to compare the situation happening at home where many people were accusing others of being communists. In the play people are accused of witchcraft and given unfair trials much like what was happening in the 50’s. Because lying had more benefits than honesty, many people in the play decided to lie and confess to witchcraft in order to stay alive.
The Crucible by Arthur Miller has many lessons to learn from. One of The major lesson I thought that is important is honesty. The accusations throughout the story were built on lies from those trying to protect their own name, and putting the town into confusion. Nobody in Salem, Massachusetts felt like they could trust anymore, after all of the false allegations made. In fact they were being harmed. An example from the movie is when the participants in the experiment were told entering the program by Nurse Evers that they were all being treated for bad blood when in fact they were being solely experimented on for the benefit of the government. The men were receiving free treatment that was not even designed to better their health. The benefits for the participants did not outweigh the risks. Matter of fact one may argue that there were many risks and little to no benefits.
