Did the EU’s goal of shared peace between lots of different cultures and people work out? The European Union, also known as the EU is a supranational organization that consists of 28 different countries. The EU was made to bring together countries that were torn apart by the war and to create peace between those countries. The EU works toward shared goals and issues yet remain separate countries all the same. The benefits of being a member in the European Union does not outweigh the costs due to loss of sovereignty, social unrest and peace, economic issues, and cultural identity with the diversity of languages and cultures.
The European Union is currently undergoing economic struggles within its countries. Since joining the EU, Greece’s

This creates a “delicate issue facing the new Europe is how to create a common foundation without carpeting over the continent’s rich tapestry of peoples, languages, cuisines, and cultures” (Doc F). Many countries are very proud of their origin and culture and they don’t want that taken away from them. Even though sometimes it might have to be. Every important document or law that is presented in the EU has to be translated into every language that exists in the EU to make sure that all people can understand what’s happening. So, “the union employs some 4,000 interpreters and translators” everyday (Doc F). This can become very costly since there are so many languages that things need to be translated too. Herr Eisenhauer stated that “European culture is a bouquet of flowers...Together they are beautiful. But the rose is still a rose, and the tulip is a tulip. This must be preserved” (Doc F). This is saying that all of the different cultures and languages make the EU beautiful and different. But, there are still roses which is all the difficulties having to translate and costs of these interpreters and translators. Then tulips that are each country's culture and the way they do things, and that these things shouldn’t be taken away from, or in other words, they must be preserved. Being a member of the EU and having a different culture and language then other countries make being a member a disadvantage. It’s a disadvantage because all countries want to keep their way of things and not join the union and have to follow European
The French Revolution was a drastic time for the people of France. In 1789, the majority of people were living in poverty and dealing with terrible conditions. People were split into three estates: the first, second, and third, the first being the wealthiest. Political, economic, and social situations were what contributed to people’s desire for change. The three main, or biggest causes of the French Revolution, were taxes, inequality, and lack of reform.

Imperialism, as an irrevocable phenomenon, facilitated the expansionism, conflicting interests, intense nationalism, and seething competition that enveloped the European continent at the beginning of the 20th century. Characteristic of the movement, imperialism fostered policies of colonial expansion and conquest, exemplified by the evidence of Source B. The German imperialistic career, beginning after the events of the Franco-German War in 1884, swallowed almost a million square miles and governed an additional 14 million people; the French Empire, after a revival of ‘the old colonial spirit’ conquered an area of over 3.5 million square miles and brought under its protection over 37 million indigenous peoples of these colonies; Italian, Russian,

The second document highlights the National Security Council 68, a central document of the Cold War that laid out the strategic foundation for American foreign policy after the devastating decline of western European powers during World War II left the United States and Soviet Union as the dominant nations. The National Security Council argues that the Soviet Union poses a threat due to “being animated by a new fanatic faith” in communism to impose “absolute authority over the world” (Doc 2). This type of behavior is anti-ethical to the American values, so the fight between America and the Soviet Union was inevitable. The document outlined possible responses of isolation, diplomatic efforts to negotiate, or the rapid buildup of strength of
The creation of the United States was a long process that was influenced by many different individuals with many different thoughts and ideas. Jean Jacques Rousseau was one of many who contributed ideas that helped shaped our government as we know it, but his ideas were the most important to consider when creating the United States Government, followed by the ideas of Montesquieu, John Locke, and Voltaire. Rousseau believed that a government couldn't function properly if the people were unwilling to submit to a higher authority, thus creating the concept of the consent of the governed. All the men and women who helped create this country wanted to create something that was different than what they were used to. In the 1500’s and 1600’s, European thinkers began to raise

A third category of Eurosceptic party opposed to the EU are Left-wing parties (to the left of the mainstream left) who are opposed to the neo-liberal direction in which European integration is progressing and who believe that the EU is increasingly being run as a capitalist club on behalf of capitalists (see Milner 2004). Such parties have enjoyed quite significant electoral success in recent years, deploying an alternative vision of a more social Europe with a clearer global vision. Parties such as the Danish Socialist People’s Party - SocialistiskFolkeparti, The Left - Die Linke- in Germany, The Left party – Vänsterpartiet - in Sweden and the Left Block - Bloco de Esquerda ‐ in Portugal are becoming increasingly established parties within

The change of paradigm from a traditional second language acquisition (henceforth SLA) perspective to multilingualism has contributed enormously to developing the field of multilingual research. However, findings derived from research on third language acquisition (henceforth TLA) and multilingual education has not been applied in the classroom setting. However, teacher training programmes devoted to deal with the multilingual factor in current language pedagogies have been absent in Europe (De Angelis, 2011) and have been dominated by the English-only policy (Otwinoswka, 2017). For this reason, teachers may have preconceived ideas about various issues in third language (henceforth L3) learning and teaching, especially in multilingual contexts.
