The Leadership Style of Participative The purpose of this paper is to discuss my style of leadership based on the completed self-assessment, describes what leadership and management theories align with my leadership style, and based on my leadership style, discuss the type of work environment, and three key actions or behaviors that you must demonstrate to be a successful leader. My style of leadership based on the completed self-assessment, describes what leadership. Participative (or participatory) management, otherwise known as employee involvement or participative decision making, encourages the involvement of stakeholders at all levels of an organization in the analysis of problems, development of strategies, and implementation of solutions. Employees are invited to share in the decision-making process of the firm by participating in activities such as setting goals, determining work schedules, and making suggestions. Other forms of participative management include increasing the responsibility of employees (job enrichment); forming self-managed teams, quality circles, or quality-of-work-life committees; and soliciting survey feedback. Participative management, however, involves more than allowing employees to take part in making decisions. It also involves management treating the ideas and suggestions of employees with consideration and respect. The most extensive form of participative management is direct employee ownership of a company. Democratic Leader who encourages open communication and staff participation in decisions. Workers are given responsibility, accountability, and feedback regarding their performance. Relationships are important to this leader who places a focus on quality improvement of systems and processes, rather than on mistakes of individual team members. As a nurse leader you are an example to others—either positive or negative. It may be necessary for you to adopt characteristics from a variety of leadership styles based on the situation at hand. Regardless of the leadership activity needed, it is important to act with integrity, to set realistic goals, to communicate clearly and often, to encourage others, to recognize the successes of your team members, and to inspire them to provide the best of care. Leadership has many definitions. Chin, Desormeaux, and Sawyer (2016) define leadership as a relationship between followers and a leader with the intent to promote change through a mutual vision. Therefore, leaders are active influences in the outcome of organizations, through their decision-making, strategies, and influence on followers (Dinh et al., 2014). Additionally, in the nursing context, it has been documented that a leader 's style plays a factor in patient outcomes (Fischer, 2016). Indeed, in an ever-changing, complex health care environment, nursing leadership has become a crucial factor in managing challenges and maintaining patient safety (Fischer, 2016).
Some may say this is the least productive form of leadership. They don’t offer any type of guidance and the group members will be the ones making all the decisions. There is often a lack of motivation in the group and no clear defined role. The last form of leadership is the Participative or Democratic leadership. These types of leaders are usually the most effective because not only do they offer guidance, they also allow and encourage participation from the members.

Nursing administration on a national level is best described by The National Center for HealthCare Leadership (NCHL). This is a non profit organization that exemplifies quality care and leadership in the 21 st century. The goal of this organization is to improve healthcare on a national level through efficient and effective management that is in accordance with it’s mission. In keeping with it ’s mission, NCHL embarked upon an ambitious initiative with the support of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, examining the role of the senior leadership team in promoting quality and safety in his/her organization (Disch, Dreher, Davidson, Sinioris, & Wainio, 2011).

Nursing is a profession that started as part of the larger medical field. The Institute of Medicine (IOM) has a strong stance on nurses and leadership. They believe that nurses are a vital component to health care system and nurses in leadership roles can have a positive impact on such. Nurses are in all sorts of roles within the health care systems ranging from a staff nurse, nurse managers, to advance practice, all the way to congress (Finkelman & Kenner, 2013). In addition, they even serve in the boardroom within some health care organizations. Leadership doesn’t necessarily mean a nurse in a manager position, but a nurse who has an influence on staff.

Participative Approach The Participative approach, is often called the democratic leadership style as participative leadership values the input of team members and peers in general, but the responsibility of making the final decision relies with the participative leader. Part 1 Introduction- Statement about Leadership Yukl(2010) defined Leadership as the process of influencing others to understand and agree about what needs to be done and how to do it, and the process of facilitating individual and collective efforts to accomplish shared objectives. Winston and Patterson (2006) stated leadership aimed to identify the diversity of their followers in order to achieve goals and can provide some support, training and education to the followers to help them to improve their abilities within the organization’s goals and resources to ensure the goals can be reached.
They are able to connect, communicate and coordinate across multiple departments, professional opinions and voices, and the daily schedules of patients. Advocating and designing care with the patient and family is a true skills set and cultural attribute that adds tremendously to a culture of safety and patient – centeredness but requires the most able leadership to build these bridges across the many professionals engaged in care. Building this culture is a leadership challenge and there is no one in my experience better able to make these changes than nursing leaders ( Maureen Bisognano, 2009). Nurses should not just be at the bedside or within the nursing community but must be involved as leaders and decision – makers throughout the healthcare system. Nursing is gaining influence in all aspect of healthcare practice, therefore it is important for nurses to develop good leadership skills at the early stage of their practice which is the key to all nursing career and nurse managers can become good leaders with effective training and enhancement of their skills in leadership. Most nursing managers are tossed around by their leaders when they themselves are leaders in their capacities. A nursing manager aspiring to become a leader must be committed to excellence and passion for patient’s advocacy, employee’s protection and be a role model, living by example.
