When arranging activities for play based learning within early years provision there can be barriers towards it from taking place. Before the week begins, planning is needed. When planned activities are prepared resources are needed too. Resources can become a barrier towards play. This is because the resources that were needed were not available to be used. Due to this what could take place instead is for the early years practitioner to gather other resources for the children to use for the activity or to just to begin a different activity for the children to join in with. Staffing can become a barrier too. When playing with children it is important that at least another adult is in the room with you. It is important for the children to feel comfortable and safe. If the activity that they are doing reminds them of something that has happened to them then immediate care and support must be provided to the child. If the children are playing nicely with one another and then a child begins to hit or kick another child then that child that is hurting the other must be removed from the situation as they are causing a barrier towards play based learning. With play based learning it is important that it not cause any harm towards the children and must be health and safety checked beforehand. Therefore, we have a risk assessment to check before the childcare sector opens for the children and parents to enter as well as tidying up constantly. Culture is also important to consider the reason for this is because children are all different from one another and have diverse cultures. An example would be baking/cooking some ingredients are not allowed for certain cultures. Its important to promote a sense of belonging in the setting as when children grow up, they need to feel that they belong to the group, whether that group is their family, their culture, the community they live
Any professional working with children or young people is responsible for the care and well being of those children. Making sure that a child is safe on or out of a school setting is of paramount importance. Not only does it make a child or young person feel safe in a learning environment but it also gives the child the security to develop and achieve from an early age. For children to be effectively protected, it is essential that everyone accepts the responsibility of their role and to also be protected in that role. E.g. when escorting a child to the toilet or a child needs to be undressed due to any accident, it is vital that another member of staff or child is present as to not allow any allegations of misconduct.
The current framework also consists of the 7 areas of learning. Communication and language is the first area of learning. It says in the EYFS that communication and language is all about giving children opportunities to experience a rich language environment; to develop their confidence and skills in expressing themselves; and to speak and listen in a range of situations. Children are learning and competence in communicating, speaking and listening, beginning to read and write must be supported and extended. Here, the child would be dependant on the practitioner to provide the child with the correct resources when they are at nursery and also to provide the correct help for the child (i.e. a speech and language specialist if needed) and advice for the parent.
It has been shown that play is very important to a childâ€TMs learning. Learning through play helps a child make positive contribution.
When working with children and young people, it is important that their safety and well-being is paramount. There are a number of guidelines, policies and procedures which cover the safeguarding of pupils, including; Working together to safeguard children (2013)- This policy sets out guidelines of how organisations and individuals should work together to safeguard and promote the welfare of children and young people in accordance with the Children Act 1989 and the Children Act 2004. For this extended assignment I am going to focus on play and the importance of play is for children and young people. I am going to focus on children up to age of 6. “Play is a spontaneous and active process in which thinking, feeling and doing can flourish.” (http://www.playwales.org.uk/ ). Play is Important for children and young people’s as it can help children to build their confidence.
To prevent possible abuse from those working directly with children and to prevent allegations of abuse it is important to adopt good working practices. These help young children to get a feel of what is appropriate and may help them to respond if another adult behaves differently. The basis of safe working practice is openness so that other adults in the setting can either see or know what you are doing when you are with the children.
It is not just protecting children against abuse and neglect, but also to help a child to achieve their best, giving them the opportunities, nurturing and providing facilities along with keeping them safe. It is our responsibility to keep children safe such as, accidents while at school. Protecting them from bullying ensuring children can feel safe while at school and being approachable and someone for them to talk to with any concerns or problems. Regular talks during school, to explain and reinforce the consequences of bullying/cyberbully, verbal and physical abuse is not tolerated.
Allow space: This will enable children to be able to roam around and allow them to feel empowered. Even if you’re not involved in their play it offers a sense of reassurance to children. You can also support a play based approach to learning by encouraging children to play with things they may not have played with before e.g playing with the resource yourself alongside the child. Learning Outcome 3.4 Every setting has a set of policies and procedures regarding the protection and safeguarding of children.
