This essay will discuss the uses, strategies and the meanings that are generated by editing in cinema. The films that this essay will be focusing on are Psycho and Singin’ in the Rain. Both of these films are very different to each other and therefore use editing in varying ways in order to give the audience a different perception of the characters as well as the setting that these characters are involved in. Psycho focuses on building suspense for the audience throughout the film using editing, camera work and sound. This essay will be primarily focusing on editing with the discussion of camerawork where relevant. In the film Singin’ in the Rain, there is a very simple use of editing, as well as an intentional lack of editing in some scenes. This is because the film involves an abundance of dancing characters who are not only performing as actors, but as dancers. Due to this, many wideshots are used in order for the audience to be able to see the actors in the film dancing. There are a lack of jump cuts because this sort of editing is not required to be used in order to create an effect or sense of pace for the audience in the same way the film Psycho does, in fact, there is no need for the audience to have a sense of pace in order to create suspense as the film is not intended to make the audience feel excited for what is about to come, but rather to show what life is like as a hollywood actor. The lack of complex editing and the use of the same type of shots rather than an assembly of multiple different shots of the same thing relaxes the audience instead of putting them on the edge of their seats like Pyscho would. At the start of the scene, the lighting is dark so the viewers can’t see the Sapphires are the crowd, but they can see the band in the background so they can tell The Sapphires are about to sing. The rest of the scene the lighting is dark in the background so we can only see the band and The Sapphires, so we pay attention to what is happening. Since this scene is the Sapphires singing the only sound in this scene is Gail and the three girls singing. This sets the scene because the song they are singing is sad and gloomy, the Director wanted the viewers to feel their pain. The Director using an editing technique that looks like the camera is moving from the position in one second but without it being filmed.

One of the most classic staples in film history, Singin’ in the Rain, influenced the way the film industry made movies forever. Singin’ in the Rain was a musical-comedy produced by Arthur Freed. It was released in 1952, but based in the late 1920’s, depicting the transition from silent films to “talkies.” Don Lockwood, played by Gene Kelly, was an already successful actor in the silent film era. Kathy Selden, played by Debbie Reynolds, was an aspiring actress who fell in love with Lockwood.
The music and direction was particularly impressive. Throughout the film, music was used as a tool to achieve the desired dramatic effect. During the first scene of the movie, Shaw is ready for battle, so the music is upbeat; however, when the battle begins and the South begins attacking, the music becomes ominous before the sounds of explosions, screams and chaos drown out the drums. The music mirrors the chaos and panic that Shaw is experiencing. Music is also utilized in the film to emphasize happy moments.

The film, based on a missing patient investigation, turns out as a cover up psychological experiment designed to bring Edward (Teddy) Daniels back to sanity concludes to be the truth. This essay discusses that by analysing certain scenes, including the opening scene, Teddy and Chuck addresses Dr Cawley, and whislt Teddy and Chuck interview the patients.
