Leading with Soul is both an inspiring book and a guide for becoming a better leader. The book alternates between telling the story of a leader who is striving to find meaning in his work, and regular interludes, which include summaries, reflective questions, and information regarding various spiritual philosophies. I was exposed to dimensions of leadership I had never previously considered. This paper will reflect upon how Leading with Soul helped me understand the spiritual nature of leadership, identify strategies for nurturing the spiritual side of my own leadership, expand my capacity for assisting others during challenging times, and increase my compassion while working with difficult others.

The 16th Street Baptist Church was organized as the First Colored Baptist Church of Birmingham in 1873. It became the first African-American church to be organized in Birmingham. A site was soon acquired on 3rd Avenue North between 19th and 20th Street for a dedicated building. In 1880, the church sold that property and built a new church on the present site on 16th Street and 6th Avenue North. The new brick building was completed in 1884, but in 1908 the city condemned the structure and ordered it to be demolished.

Ministering to the church of God requires two traits: sacrifice and commitment. Few men possess either of these things, and even fewer are willing to work toward them. God and church activities have been a part of my weekly routine for as long as I can remember. If it is nine o’clock on a Sunday morning, I will definitely be in a church pew at Highland Baptist Church. My parents make sure that I understand the importance of going to church and trying to exemplify the spirit of Christ daily. I have been given the amazing opportunity to be raised on Godly morals in a strong Christian household. Before I discuss my experience at Grace Lutheran Church I feel it would be beneficial to explain my Church Background, so that you can better understand my outsider view of the Sunday morning worship Service I attended. My parents are from South Carolina, which is also where I grew up, so our idea of Church has always been a small community with a very relaxed atmosphere. I interviewed my mom, Catherine Farrar, for the religion interview assignment. My mom was raised Catholic, but stopped attending church in college and never looked back. She is a feminist, and the Catholic Church is simply not conducive to feminist beliefs. The sermon begins with an introduction to the story of Peter Healing a Lame Beggar and emphasizes on Acts 3:1-8. Bishop Jakes discusses that the man in the story was only expecting to receive something, no matter what it was, as long as it was something. He then goes into how people are afraid of disappointment, how to have the courage to raise your expectations, and how to break your patterns. He describes how the environment you are in can affect your success and how it’s beneficial to surround yourself with others who are better and who have different things than you do. To be able to want better and receive better, you have to surround yourself with better.

Answers to the right questions yield connections, which lead to transformational truth. Many search for proof of the existence of God or seek to answer questions about His character or provision without looking in the most obvious places. Creation, the Word and humanity itself all reveal the answers of how God makes Himself known to His people. Foundational to vocational ministry is an understanding of how God is one in relationship and how that oneness creates responsibility as the Trinity. Personally, the freedom to live in covenant and as a representative of the King is only possible through this continual revelation.
