Throughout society there are many forms of deviance, such as deviant behavior, mental illness, social stigmas, and crime. I personally am focusing on personality and personality in reference to deviance would be mental illness. Mental illness is defined, identified, and treated, even though it is typical for many to think of mental illness only in psychological terms. Deviance has many factors and plays a big part in all the different personality disorders that many people have. Personality disorders are maladaptive patterns of behavior of a specific kind, which causes long-term difficulties in personal relationships or functioning in society. Deviance describes an action or behavior that violates social norms. Norms are rules and expectations by which members of society are conventionally guided. Deviance is an absence of conformity to these norms. Social norms are different from culture to culture. For instance, a deviant act can be committed in one society that breaks their social norms, but than you may commit the same deviant act in another society and its then completely normal there. When it comes to deviance and mental illness they often go hand in hand. Not all deviant behavior is considered mentally ill, but many mentally ill …show more content…

Some say that the stress of being in a low income situation, being a racial minority, or being a women in a sexist society all contributes to higher rates of having a mental illness. Some may argue that this same behavior is just labeled as mentally ill for certain cultural groups but the behavior that is happening can also be accepted and tolerated in other cultural settings. For instance, if a homeless woman commits a crazy act of behavior she would be considered mentally ill, but if a rich woman committed the same exact behavior as the homeless woman people wouldn’t classify her as mentally
