George Orwell's Animal Farm As A Dystopian Society

Imagine all rights being stripped away and being ruled by a cruel leader, but not knowing it. Imagine many believing the surrounding world is a beautiful utopia, when in reality it is far from this. Utopias and dystopias both can seem like ideal societies from the outside, but a dystopia achieves the utopian idea of perfection by oppressive totalitarian control. In the novel Animal Farm, written by George Orwell, a utopian society was initially sought, but was proved to be unattainable and dictatorial control was enacted. The illusion of perfection combined with the close watch of the citizens, causing fear of the outside world, expresses the dystopian characteristics found on Animal Farm.

Idealistic worlds, the idea of a society that humanity has tried to achieve numerous times. Mankind is to blame for the reason of constant failure to attain a Utopian society because of the natural flaws that humans obtain, causing a constant battle for the perfect place. From several failed societies had resulted in the creation of a dystopia, a state in which everything is unpleasant or bad, usually caused by totalitarian rule. In the novel, Animal Farm by George Orwell, the author created a mocked society off of the Russian Revolution using animals as the people. The fabricated dystopia was to emphasize how leadership affects the success societies.

Due to this, the novel written by George Orwell is clearly a dystopia. Orwell composed Animal Farm as an allegory of the Russian Revolution. He wanted his readers to understand what an unsuccessful society looks like, and how power can lead to corruption, like it did in Russia under Stalin’s rule. In literature, the citizens of a dystopian society blame their government for the crisis they are in, which tends to result in a revolution. “It is not wisdom but authority that makes a low.” Thomas Hobbes’ quote reveals that the world is all about authority and how powerful people are. In other words, to be able to rule, wisdom is not essential. However, authority is crucial. This quote relates to George Orwell’s Animal Farm as it represents the theme of power by the pigs that use propaganda, intimidation and false informations to take over the farm and to control the animals.

In the book, Mr. Jones, the owner of the Manor farm is so lazy and drunken that one day he forgets to feed his livestock.

One dominant theme in animal farm is totalitarianism and abuse of power. Totalitarianism is defined as a political system in which the state possesses complete authority over the society and controls all aspects of public and private life whenever necessary. The author criticized totalitarianism and believed that it was inevitable in a communist system, as those put in charge will result in the abuse of their power. The theme Orwell intended to get across was that all totalitarian regimes are the same and those who hold power will do anything to maintain it. The pigs, who were the leaders, frequently displayed this throughout the novel.

In this process, Squealer plays a significant role in comforting the animals and keeping the farm in peace. Squealer does this by persuading the animals through his persuasive speeches. In this novel, George Orwell illustrates the huge influence a speech can have on the society’s mind and on individuals. Old Major’s speech about how all animals are equal and they should rebel against their oppressors influence the animals heavily. In the

In Animal Farm, Napoleon uses a persuasive pig, Squealer, to act like propaganda and transmit information around the farm to keep the working animals distracted. One of Squealer’s main jobs on the farm was to persuade the farm animals that when the pigs broke the law, the reason was always for the betterment of the farm. Orwell writes, “‘It was absolutely necessary’, he said, ‘that the pigs, who were the brains of the farm, should have a quiet place to work in’” (Orwell 66).
