“Government is not the solution to our problem; government is the problem” - Ronald Reagan. Often a dystopia is formed when a government tries to form a utopian/perfect society. In literature, the citizens of a dystopian society blame their government for the crisis they are in, which tends to result in a revolution. In Animal Farm by George Orwell, Crane Brittin’s theories such as all social classes are discontented, people feel restless or held down unacceptable restrictions in society, and that the government does not respond to the needs of the society are common factors highlighted in the novel that represent why the society decides to start a revolution.
In the novel, all social classes of animals are discontented because of the treatment they get from their owner, Mr. Jones. On the farm, Jones “‘sets them [the animals] to work’” to grow and gather the resources on the farm. They also breed more animals, which are then taken away. So, “‘he gives back to them the bare minimum that will prevent them from starving, and he keeps the rest for himself’” (8). Jones cares about what he makes from the farm, meaning that the animals are not well cared for because he is only concerned about himself. The animals are left with barely anything after giving Jones so much. All the animals are then miserable with their lives. Old Major explains that “‘even the miserable lives [they] lead are not allowed to reach their natural span,’” besides Old Major who has actually lived a long 12
Although most people think conformity is just following after rules , it’s more like following the rules even if you disagree. Being a leader , someone who does their own thing , making their own rules or decisions , and doing what you believe in takes toll on the definition of conformity. On Animal Farm there were rules known as “The Seven Commandments” helped differentiate conformist from nonconformist , and my conformist is Clover. The point-guard of Oklahoma’s basketball team , Russel Westbrook, is my conformist . Clover knew Napoleon was wrong in situations but because she was not a leader but a follower she went along with everything Napoleon did or suggested.
I read a book called, “Animal Farm” written by George Orwell. The book is about animals on a farm who are overworked and aren 't treated well. Then, an insurgency made up of animals with pigs as their leaders, rebel against Mr.Jones (owner of the farm) by driving him off his farm. The animals try to make the perfect life for themselves, but that doesn’t go as planned. The animal farm then starts to fail.
While trying to get their freedom and create the perfect utopia, animals found themselves in a difficult situation. They managed to cast out Mr Jones, but another dictator came to the farm, but this time it was one of them. By creating animalism, the pigs used an illusion in order to satisfy their greed and lust for power. George Orwell is more interested in political psychology rather than with individual characters.
“It is not wisdom but authority that makes a low.” Thomas Hobbes’ quote reveals that the world is all about authority and how powerful people are. In other words, to be able to rule, wisdom is not essential. However, authority is crucial. This quote relates to George Orwell’s Animal Farm as it represents the theme of power by the pigs that use propaganda, intimidation and false informations to take over the farm and to control the animals.

Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels express their major critiques and opinions on capitalism in their 1848 publication of The Communist Manifesto. Their critiques are based around the idea that capitalism is simply unfair, meaning that one class benefits significantly more than the rest. The class that benefits least from capitalism is the proletariats. This unintelligent labor class suffers from the capitalists dominance, and is unaware of the damage they are experiencing. George Orwell’s depiction of Boxer in his novel, Animal Farm, fits precisely into Marx and Engels’ negative critique of capitalism by representing a strong symbol for the proletariat class and succumbing to the powerful demands of the capitalists.
Utopia to Dystopia: The Collapse of Animal Farm The attempt at creating a utopian society led the animals closer to a dystopia. The novel Animal Farm demonstrates that a fantasy paradise is unattainable and is parallel to the attempt of the Soviet Union. As leaders, the pigs paraphrased the rules, and made themselves as superior to the working class of animals. Not all the animals acknowledge the idea of a farm governed by animals and disregard the rules.
“If liberty means anything at all, it means the right to tell people what they do not want to hear” (George Orwell). George Orwell lived from 1903 to 1950. During this era there were many political dilemmas occuring in the world, especially in Russia with Stalin and Marxism. Even though these occurred in the Soviet Union, it still greatly affected America, because the Soviet Union and the US were in the Cold War around this time. George Orwell’s work brings up the conversation of some of these political issues and their influence on America.
The contrast to this perfect society is a dystopian society. Dystopian societies are marked with fear and have little to no chance of improvement. Animal Farm, an allegorical novel by George Orwell, includes a dystopian society. The novel takes place on a rural farm known as, Animal Farm, which is a dystopian society alluding to Soviet Russia. Although Animal Farm is portrayed as the perfect utopia, the animals living on the farm cannot create individual thoughts because of the way they are controlled by propaganda, characterizing Animal Farm as a dystopian society due to these traits.
Throughout all the events in the novel and revolution, the accomplishments and the failures in forming a dictatorship or any form of government was shown. Another theme was that anything that sounded like a paradise could quickly take advantage of people and change their whole vision of that paradise. With Animal Farm, all the animals thought the farm would be heaven without Jones, and it turned out to be equal, if not, even worse without him running the farm. Many themes could be learned from this story and revolution. People are always looking for Utopia, but Orwell's belief was that it does not exist.
The meeting is concluded with old Major teaching the animals a song called Beasts of England, which becomes their anthem. When old Major dies, the pigs Napoleon, Snowball and Squealer take leadership roles, and develop old Major 's teachings into a system called Animalism.
