George often said that being in the Navy for three years helped greatly influence and shape his view and way of life. “There is no question that having been involved in combat has affected my way of looking at problems. The overall experience was the most maturing in my life. Robert Arneson’s Portrait of George portrays George Moscone, a former mayor of San Francisco in the late 1970s. The portrait is actually a bust, that sits on a column covered with graffiti and phrases in reflection to Moscone’s life and may have been deemed unusual due to its overly casual appearance in bright colors and irreverent nature. This contrasts with Moscone’s professional career and reputation in politics and was not successful as political art as it was taken down for being seen as inappropriate and unrefined. Though Arneson’s intentions may have meant well, the controversy lied in the lack of nobility of the appearance of the bust. An honoring of a person in form of art is usually seen as more noble and serious in appearance as
George is responsible for making sure Lennie has food, stays out of trouble, and stays safe. These seem like simple things, but not with him. When they were in Weed, he wanted to feel how soft a girl’s dress was, and didn’t let go when she wanted him to. It got completely out of hand and they had the sheriff looking for him. His memory was so awful, that after they ran out of there, he didn’t remember what he had done.

We have all had to sacrifice something to get to what we want, wether it was a good night sleep, a night with friends, or an actual friend. We have all experienced it in one way or another, but George made a sacrifice that cost him a lot. It cost him a friend, and someone else life. He knew that Lennie would never be able to survive with the guys on the ranch chasing him and wanting to kill him.
