Gilded Age Research Paper

The Gilded Age soared up from the 1870’s to around ! 900 and everything changed. Technology surged and began to move everything along at a rapid pace. There was corruptness in the government and big businesses started to take over. These companies only sought out for wealth, power, and land.

Many Americans came to idealize these businessmen such as Rockefeller, Morgan, Gould, and Ford just to name a few. They were aggressive competitors and was out for personal financial success and power in the oil, banking, and railroad industries. Some of these big shots were honest regarding their business transaction as others took their power to bribe and pull fast ones over on people to maintain their wealth and power. The good and the bad had a lot of influence over government. (usa) “Gilded Age” also suggests a fascination with gold itself and with the wealth and power that gold symbolizes.”

The Gilded age is an American History term meaning covered with glitter and gold and was applied to this period because of political corruption. President Grant was elected as president because of his war experience not his political background. He relied on his staff to help him make decisions. His staff was very corrupt and found themselves involved in many political scandals. Some of the issues that grant faced during his time in office was printing money, cheaper currency, and inflation.

Introduction This period was called the Gilded Age because it was when America started to become more wealthy. More people were working so the factories produced more and could sell more. Lots of things were starting to be invented. Americans also started to get greedy during this age.

The Gilded Age is recognized as an era of economic improvement. A period of time where great changes were made. From technology improvements to political corruption, to more job opportunities to unfair wages for immigrant laborers. There was an expansion of cities and new ways of transportation that were developed, for example the big railroad. These advances were meant to help people of all social levels, from business men to farmers.

The Gilded Age, a term created by Mark Twain, described the conditions of the 1890s and 1900s. Twain stated that even though there were significant advancements and achievements, the United States was cheap and full of corruption. In my opinion, this concept is overstated and too harsh. The United States did have its imperfections such as big businesses monopolizing industry and poor working conditions for employees, but the positive factors of this era outweighed the negative factors. These positive factors included the termination of the spoils system, growth of industry, and the creation of the middle class.

Imagine a time where machines replaced people, iron replaced wood and steel replaced iron. A time where the electric light bulb has just been invented and the railroad was expanding across America. Industrialization was a huge turning and growing point for the United States. It helped shape the United States and the world we live in today. Through the inventions, development of businesses, and laws passed by the government industrialization had a positive effect on the United States.

Thesis/Argument - The United States has reentered a Gilded Age. During this time period, the livelihood of many individuals was left in the hands of the rich. Technological innovations replaced many jobs and left people seeking for employment. Similarly, to the Gilded age, the technological innovations are both a blessing and curse in today’s day and age.

Since life began on Earth, the world has substantially improved and grown to its current state—the remarkable age of industrialization. Day in and day out, the nation continues to develop as discoveries are being made. This culture not only influences America’s social values, but those of developing countries. Specifically, America is recognized for its quality of life, in disregard of what it took to achieve the freedom that the people deserve. After the Civil War and Reconstruction Era, early civilization in both the North and the South ultimately struggled with accepting change in order to prosper.

We begin our year working with the novel "Lord of the Flies" and view it through the eyes of Sigmund Freud 's id, ego and super-ego theories. This unit specifically looks at literary analysis and introduces the thesis essay. Our next units follow the social studies curriculum and are run more like a civics class. We will be starting our antebellum/Cival War unit in January. This unit focuses on research skills and argumentative writing.

One of the first people to define the era that is now called the ‘Gilded Age’ was Mark Twain. He described the time period as ‘glittering on the surface, but corrupt underneath.’ Sadly, this statement was quite accurate, for the Gilded Age was sparked by the Second Industrial Revolution, which was a time of innovation but also corruption. Although many aspects of the country were being revolutionized during the Gilded Age, and some people benefited from the changes, these changes also brought about new problems for many other people.     In the late 19th century, technology, inventions, sources of energy, railroads, and the market were all being revolutionized, which is why the era is also appropriately titled the Second Industrial Revolution.

The Gilded Age was took place right after the Reconstruction period, roughly from the 1880s to 1900. In this stage of American history, there was a boom in industry and immigration. Industries such as iron, steel, and the railroad came into play. There were a select few individuals who became multimillionaires from those industries,

This patronage system, known as the Spoils System, gave loyal supporters (of a political party) government jobs at the local, state, or even federal level, if that party won the important elections that gave it power. Choosing the correct party was the most important decision of some supporters since their decision could mean to have a paycheck or no job at all. “To the victor go the spoils,” was one of the phrases used to describe the spoils system and since it could give people jobs in an instance. This system prompted many government employees to vote in great numbers so they could retain their jobs. Gilded Age The Gilded age was known for all the fantastic innovations throughout the time period, but when looked at a little closer, all the scandals and corruption can be seen underneath the reforms and inventions. Not to say that this corruption undermined all the new and improved systems in the age; it was just another of the many things that America could learn from. Some of the reforms are for monopolies, railroads, and the civil service system.
