Growing up with two older sisters, things were easier for me. From my sister’s experiences with growing up, I was able to take their experience and mainly learn from it. Colleges and universities is a big phase for one’s life and I got an idea of what college was like through my older sisters while I was in high school. The famous social organization, sororities and fraternities, is common among the American college culture. They consist of sisterhood/brotherhood that are based on rituals and creeds that indicates services, friendship, leadership, and academic achievements. While I didn’t know much about it at the time, my sisters were members of the Sigma Phi Omega at Cal State Long Beach. The dedication to the organization was intensive from watching them leave early for class to coming home late at night to staying up late to study and the cycle repeats. …show more content…
For a while, I thought to myself, why do these college organizations cause such negative impact to a student’s life? From what I assume the Greek organization should provide a positive aspect and beneficial impact on a student’s education but from listening to different stories and watching my sisters go through their experiences in Sigma Phi Omega, it seem like it can be emotionally and physically harmful for a student. Fraternities and sororities on college campuses can have a negative impact on a student’s education and life; therefore, administration should consider strict regulations due to various reasons of
This past year I joined the sorority Kappa Delta. I never thought I would enjoy being in an organization as much as I do now. Kappa Delta has allowed me to get more involved with my school and my community. I enjoy working with the Girl Scouts and the Child Advocacy Center of Hamilton County. Getting involved on campus was something that I wanted to accomplish this year and with Kappa Delta I have been able
She found herself moving around the country often, spending months at a time without her husband. Naturally, most of her time was spent with her children: Beth, Arkansas; and Bill, a member of Pi Kappa Phi at the University of California, Berkeley. No matter where the family lived, there was always a welcoming Kappa alumnae association. Just as in her collegiate days when Betty served as Marshal, Membership Chairman and President of her chapter, she continued active engagement in alumnae associations. Through the years, she served as a member of House Board at the University of Southern California, chapter adviser at the University of Maryland, Province Director of Chapters, an original Regional Director of Alumnae, member of the Ethics and Values Task Force, Director of Alumnae and member of the Board of Trustees of the Kappa Kappa Gamma Foundation.
There are about 260 members of Tri Delta at the University of Nevada, Reno. In order to be a member of Tri Delta, there is a huge process called Rush Week, where you basically speed date all the sororities on campus to see and find out which one fits you. According to Allison Baeulieu, an active sorority sister of mine, “a Tri Delta is a woman who is honest, reliable, selfless, and who can step up to the plate and take credible action to our chapter”. I respect that in this chapter only welcomes girls that carry themselves with grace and class. Every sorority in Tri Delta makes a big picture of the Fraternity.
A weakness of selecting certain sorority members based on the author’s discretion holds bias because of its convenient sampling. Robbins’ selection of particular participants may not fully represent the population, even though Robbins indicated that one of the sorority members would be a positive representative of the national organization. In addition, the participants are only from one institution and a small sample size. Robbins’s lack of details of her methodology of how she obtained their experiences and not using real names or locations to conceal her sources' identities lacks credibility. In addition, this challenges higher education professionals can do to solve these issues of superficial values and dangerous practices, especially since all sorority houses tend to have different reputations on different
This fraternity uses their emotional appeal to court other members. On the official Phi Beta Sigma web page, an individual would immediately see many different pictures of members of the organization and various events that they've hosted. These pictures portray brotherhood, togetherness and service in which could spark feelings amongst their audience; using emotional appeal to attract people into being interested with this particular organization. According to the Phi Beta Sigma website, there is a particular club within the fraternity on which guide and support young adolescents. This extension of the organization is called Sigma Beta Club.
I wanted join Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. sense my sophomore year of college. I want to have the brotherhood to help me grow intellectually, socially and intellectually. All these things I want and support I have seen in various moment through my experience with the brother of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity,
Starting college is a stressful process and a big change. College students worry about meeting tons of people and making new friends. Some students decide to go through sorority recruitment in order to find lifelong friends and sisters. Others go through recruitment to find people who accept them for being unique. College students find their home when finishing sorority recruitment.
The first notable member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated that really sticks out to me is Umzae George Washington Carver. He was initiated in the Gamma Chapter in the year of 1918. To begin I selected him, because he was a very familiar name. I remember learning about Umzae George Washington Carver in the elementary and middle school. With creating over 100 different uses for the peanut, soybean, and sweat potato he was a very prominent African American man in the 1920s.
“Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave, I am the dream and the hope of the slave. I rise, I rise, I rise.,” to become a Delta Woman. When asked to express why I should be awarded the honor & pleasure of being apart this great sorority; I must admit I was a bit overwhelmed but also very humbled. However, I am reminded of the great women Delta Sigma Theta has helped mold some of the most influential women in the world. I want to be apart of the most illustrious sorority organization.
‘Simply said,’ it’s the ultimate experience of a lifetime – an experience unlike any other,” (Sorority Life: The True Meaning of Sisterhood). Sisterhood involves charity events and getting dressed together and maybe even being roommates. Sisterhood is true friendship, but better. Sororities aren’t about paying for your friends, it’s about making something of yourself while also bringing up other women with you. Being a part of a sisterhood is probably the best choice any female could make to help her improve herself in any way.
“The chief significance of Alpha Phi Alpha lies in its purpose to stimulate, develop, and cement an intelligent, trained leadership in the unending fight for freedom, equality, and fraternity. Our task is endless.” Jewel Henry Arthur Callis. Since its founding Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity has remained loyal to its ideal of providing advocacy for its community.
A soror is entitled to attend the three Rites of passage of any chapter, granted that she is properly attired. Sorors under disciplinary action are not entitled to attend induction and Initiation. The secrets, passwords, signs and grips are never written but are transmitted by word of mouth from one Delta to another. All sorority insignia should be worn properly, respectfully, and in good taste. Membership in Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is a lifetime commitment.
To the women of the grad chapter of Delta Sigma Theta, Incorporated: The purpose of this letter is to inform you of my interest in becoming a member of the grad chapter of Delta Sigma Theta, Incorporated. My desire to inspire young men and women and make a significant impact on their lives is just one of many reasons I aspire to join your great sorority. While growing up at a young age my mom worked out of my sibling lives. I did not have many positive female role models I could look to for guidance in different situations.
In Sigma Kappa, I found a sisterhood full of girls who truly are examples of excellence. I remember looking up to Taylor Haynes and even Kat Gillanders for their leadership around campus, and the level with which they carried themselves. I am proud that the girls of Sigma Kappa can walk around UGA without people thinking “look at that trashy sorority girl”. A big role in this is what the Standards Council does. It is important to have a program to steer college students in the right way when they start to go down a negative path.
Even though I had finally started to differentiate myself, as I got older I was still getting asked the same questions about my sisters . Besides going to the same school as my sisters, we all did different things. While my sisters decided to do what they were comfortable with, I decided to get involved in the school by trying out for field hockey, applying for student ambassadors, and joining the spanish and yearbook club. This allowed me to be in a place where I made a name for myself and not have to be compared what my sisters had done. I always felt like I had to go to extreme measures to separate myself from what my sisters did: whether it was trying to get better grades, or trying clubs they had never done, none of it seemed to work.
