The youth is the future of our society. But with the kind of environment we have now, which is what we call the “techy-world”, would it still be possible, if nowadays they are being associated with different crimes, delinquencies and misbehaviors? Adolescents display different forms of outlandish behavior. They are not just carefree novelty seekers and risk takers, but they are also uniquely vulnerable to anxiety and have a hard time learning to be unafraid of passing dangers (Friedman, 2014). Unfortunately, some of the risks that adolescents pursue may create a real threat to their holistic individuality. It is said that the family is the basic unit of the society and the first source of values; hence, the family plays a vital role in molding a child to become a fully functioning individual. As enacted into law under the Family Code of the Philippines found in Chapter 3 Article 220, the parents shall hold their duties and responsibilities to their unemancipated children, such as giving them love and affection, advice and counsel, companionship and …show more content…
The most common guidance intervention tool that guidance counselors use to deal with students with behavioral problems is counseling, as it is said to be the heart of the guidance program. However, the numerous counseling techniques pose a challenge to practitioners and that is to identify which particular technique will prove very effective in combating behavioral problems of the students. By doing so, more clients will be helped since time would be saved by using short-term but effective counseling technique. Lesser counseling sessions are needed to effect positive results to the clients. This emphasizes the need for the guidance counselors to continuously evaluate the effectiveness of the techniques they employ in intervening with their counselee’s
In recent discussions of smartphones, a controversial issue has been how the excessive use of smartphones are affecting the adolescents of this generation. Jean M. Twenge argues in her article, “Have Smartphones Destroyed a Generation?” that the redundant use of these gadgets along with social media use is in fact detrimental to the current and upcoming generations. My experience using Snapchat, Instagram, and other applications on my smartphone supports Twenge’s stance because the excessive use of these applications has caused me to feel melancholic. According to Twenge, “Psychologically, however, they (iGens) are more vulnerable than Millennials were: Rates of teen depression and suicide have skyrocketed since 2011.
Our society relies on millions of our citizens to become robust citizens both mentally and psychologically. While teenagers are expected to be obedient, they often commit acts which if they were adults would result in a felony. While these mistakes are inevitable, I feel abandoning the concept of delinquency but maintaining a system to address offenders is best. Considering the pros and cons from this point of view, it appears clear that abandoning the concept of delinquency among children rather than relying on traditional methods appears to be the most effective method which requires the most
“The back-to-front development of the brain explains why behavior sometimes seems immature, illogical, or impulsive. Teenagers are working with brains that are still under construction ” (Raising Children Network). This way of behavior, leads up to minor crimes that harm the lives of future adults. Studies show that the older a person gets, the more likely they are to grow out of negative actions (Raising Children Network), and by raising the age to 21 adolescents would have more time to develop . We expect young adults to be mature and make the right decision.

The face of American crime has evolved from adults to the not so innocent faces of adolescence. In today’s society, it is not uncommon for people to fear just walking into public places because they don’t know what horrendous actions may occur due to the indifferent, disrespectful actions of some of America’s youth. Parents are often hesitant to send their children to school because they feel that they cannot trust their child’s fellow classmates. This lack of trust and apprehension was evident in Wisconsin, where two thirteen year old girls attempted to murder one of their fellow classmates. Their reasoning was that they were trying to imitate a fictional character that they saw on the internet.
Behavioral changes from one generation to the next naturally occur little by little. Nonetheless, changes in adolescent behavior from the millennial generation triumphing it have been substantial and revolutionary. Today’s teens have never witnessed a world without internet. The majority of them possess smartphones and waste several hours each week on social media. But while numerous parents may feel allayed about their teens’ seeming uninterested in drinking, driving and dating, they could perhaps be overlooking the effects that continuous internet access has on their teens’ mental well-being.
Within the urban communities, negative perceptions are magnified. Adolescents are more prone to be a product of their environment, especially those whose parents are incarcerated. Because of this trend adolescents are being incarcerated at an alarming rate and sentenced to adult facilities. Lambie & Randall (2013) states, the United States have imposed harsher penalties on serious young offenders, and have consequently increased rates of incarcerated youth and made it easier for youth to be treated and incarcerated as adults within the justice

The children learned basic norms and values from the parents. The parents supply the economic needs for the child such as foods and education (ResviseSociology, 2014). In a family, different person performs different role and function such as a mother should take care of her child. The important is the child can feel the love and support from their parents (Gordon, 1997). Family dysfunction may appear in broken families, violent families and divorced families, etc.
Research is vital in the field of counseling because it provides with proper data on the impact and effectiveness of counseling. Therefore, there has been studies prove
Before one must speak of how counselors impact students and their future decisions, one must have a grander scheme of something none as the counselor ratio. The ratio was establish as the ideal number of students to one counselor which stands at 250 students for one counselors. However due to increased population nationally schools have become overcrowded and these ratios can not be reached. A survey conducted by the ASCA as of 2015 the average student to counselor ratio stands at “ 482-to-1 in 2014-15, compared with 491-to-1 the previous year. Although the national average has decreased, it’s still nearly twice ASCA’s recommended ratio of 250 students per school counselor.
Juvenile delinquency is a growing social problem in the world today, as worldwide, about 200,000 murders occur among youth 10–29 years of age each year (more than 500 deaths a day), which is 43% of the total number of murders globally each year (WHO, 2016). It is defined as major or minor law breaking (e.g. murder, rape, robbery, and theft) by youth (Berger, 2000) and the United Nations defines ‘youth’, as those persons between the ages of 15 and 24 years. Consequently, juvenile delinquency is a critical problem in the society, which could lead to social instability by violence and insecurity perpetrated by and against young people. These problems are caused by various influential factors ranging from peer and parental influences, environmental, and strain. It also affected by family process variables (e.g. parent-child involvement, communication, parental monitoring), indeed parenting is one of the important factors among them.
I believe that clinical counseling was what I needed, but I feel it could have been beneficial and helpful to receive support and acknowledgment from the professional school counselors on staff at our school. I believe that even if you feel like you may not be prepared to help a student it is important to at least acknowledge and address a students concern. I did not feel that I had a safe place to go at school when things were difficult because no one took time to acknowledge that I was not in the best
The home is a sanctuary of love and peace. It is the place where one feels entrenched upon. We do not talk of a physical structure which holds the living room, garage, and bedroom; but rather, of home and its embodiment in entirety. We talk of people as a home or people who causes something to become home. Moreover are events, memories, and experiences which relate to a person’s most comfortable feelings.
In this semester, I have been exposed to the subject of Introduction to Guidance and Counselling which is a new field of study for me. After I have received this lesson, I can relate my experiences with what I have learned. Not only that, I also have different perspective towards after I learned this subject. The aspects that I can relate my experiences and thoughts with are the differences between advice, guidance and counselling as well as the goals of counselling.
