The Correlation Between Guilt, Greed, and Personality Change Who an individual was yesterday may not be who they are today, and who they are today may not be who they are tomorrow. Everything is always evolving, and this includes people and their personalities as well. In the play, Macbeth, Macbeth and Lady Macbeth are no different. Due to Macbeth’s lust for power and position, he changes from someone with high status who everyone had admired to an individual who’s only path leads to warranted destruction. In like manner, Lady Macbeth also goes through this personality change but, hers is caused by a different force, guilt. This guilt of hers is also what causes her demise later in the play. Upon learning of the witches’ prophecies, the woman devised a plan which included Macbeth murdering Duncan to take his title (I, iv, 38-40). This scene demonstrates Lady Macbeth’s obvious malicious intent and her malevolent personality. After noticing her husband’s reluctance at executing her plan, she influences him so that Macbeth will conclusively murder Duncan. “…Which thou esteem’st the ornament of life, and live a coward in thine own esteem” (I, vii, 42-3). She continually criticizes him for refusing to kill Duncan, letting him know that what he was doing was considered a cowardly act. However, with the progression of the play, the audience can feel a shift in Lady Macbeth’s personality. She showed signs of her inner turmoil when she sleepwalked around the castle and mimicked the action of washing blood off her hands. In addition to this, Lady Macbeth reveals her guilt about the death of Lady Macbeth and Duncan when she rambled while she was in her disheveled state (V, I, 32-45).
