Gun Control Laws Debate

Anyone that thinks gun control is the answer to the killing that is going on is wrong! Nothing will change until parents start teaching their children right from wrong. Gun Control is too much of a political something you do to win a battle or to get what you want and failing. Politicians talks about the need to increase gun restrictions to stop gun crime, but new and current gun laws are designed to fail in order to allow certain people to own them and make unhappy because of not having a vote others.

Many accidental deaths happen each year by guns in the hands of people who do not know gun safety. People are concerned that the amount of guns available have allowed gun violence to run rampant throughout the United States. An estimation of the amount of people in the U.S. shot each year is staggering, “The Brady Campaign to Prevent Violence estimates that around 144,994 people are shot each year in the U.S.” (8 Facts). This data shows that thousands each year are shot in the United States, which includes the deaths of those killed each year. Gun control is what restricts people from buying and using guns, but these laws are not strengthened at the extent they need to be strengthened. This leads to many people getting these guns and using them to cause mass shootings all over the U.S. For example, according to the Council on Foreign Relationship, a news article that covers major world issues, in 2017, mass shootings at a music festival in Las Vegas and at a church near San Antonio have rekindled the gun control debate (“U.S. Gun Policy: Global Comparisons”). The fact that gun control is still not tightened is a huge margin and error, and still causes mass shootings as we just covered. Gun laws have been around since the 1930s starting with the National Firearms Act in 1934. Since then, there has been a long timeline of domestic terrorist attacks and changes in these laws that have consequently altered the way people view the idea of gun control. The issue of gun control is very controversial and involves many political and social perspectives. Gun laws are often debated due to ideas of violence and self defense. The basis of any gun control argument can often be linked to the concept of the second amendment which states “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”

Implementing gun control laws on domestic regulation of firearm manufactured, trade, possession, use, and transport can reduce violent killings, and suicide but policies should not focus on reducing crime via restrictions of liberty, but rather address the root causes and motivations. Gun control fails to solve the causes of gun violence in favor of political grandstanding. Studies have shown a decline and murdered victims, violence in urban areas and drug prohibition . The largest U.S. cities have seen some of the largest percentage declines.

Guns have been a part of America’s history since its creation, so much so, even an amendment of the very Constitution it was founded on is devoted to civilian possession of firearms. It therefore comes as no surprise that any initiative to somehow enforce stricter laws and regulations regarding firearms, or God forbid, strip the people of their Second Amendment right, is faced with some resistance, to say the least. However, following the example of countries that have virtually solved some crime or firearm related issues by employing somewhat unorthodox measures, could potentially reduce the amount of violent crime that is sweeping the US. In all reality more strict guns laws will not make society a safer place. Take New York for an example, they have had very strict guns laws for a long time, but they still have one of the highest crime rate in the nation. Gun Control Debate Jake Novak, in an article for CNBC titled, “Gun control isn’t the answer. We already know how to stop the violence,” gives his opinion regarding the controversial issue of gun control. Novak argues that gun control is not the answer to rising gun violence but that proper enforcement of the law would go a long way in reducing the cases of gun violence in America. He states, “We actually solved the issue of rising gun violence in America in the mid-1990’s and again in the early 2000’s by doing something radical. We enforced the law” (Novak 28).

Strict regulations and limitations have been pursued already and clearly do not suffice. Statics brought to attention by gun control opponents, show that gun control laws have done little to reduce crime rates. Several restrictions have been made on certain guns, considered as overly dangerous, though in the hands of an unstable criminal even a legal hunting gun can be deadly. Countless restrictions have been made, however people have still found ways around them. If people are unstable and determined enough, they will find a gun, regardless of the restrictions or regulations.

Citizens of the United States are promised the the right to bear arms in the Constitution, and by applying gun control laws takes away that same right. Crime is high enough in cities with very few laws pertaining to gun control, but taking guns away from people who are registered with license will not solve the problem either. Placing more limitations on gun owners, particularly responsible gun owners, will not reduce gun violence.

The use of and the owning of guns is a very hot and debated topic in society today. For many, this is a life and death debate due to the recent and numerous school shootings. These school shootings have caused an outcry for more gun control, specifically in relation to the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting. Despite these calls, increased gun control is not the answer. Most gun owners’ use their guns responsibly and for good purposes.

Criminals do not abide by the law. Gun control advocates believe “more gun control laws would deter gun related deaths”. Opposing viewpoint believe that gun ownership deters crime rather than gun laws being the reason. Gun control advocates believe the presence of a gun increases the likelihood of more gun violence including mass shootings while opposing views believe gun presence will help prevent these instances and allow for the possibility of quicker defense action from armed civilians . Both viewpoints hold value, however it seems that instead of enacting more laws surrounding the issue; perhaps gun violence would be better dealt with by enforcing the laws already in place.
