After the sinking of the USS Maine in the Havana Harbor and the eyebrow raising concerns of Spanish treatment of Cuba, President William McKinley declared war against Spain, originating in The Spanish-American War of 1898. It was then that America intervened in Cuba’s war for independence from Spain, eventually seizing the Spanish territories of the Philippines and Guam. As a result, they soon found themselves involved in the mist of the Philippine Revolution.
Subsequently, working for and being under Spanish control, Aguinaldo joined a movement launching an uprising for the Philippines fight for independence. This caused him to be exiled in 1897, but he returned after American persuasions. Upon his return, he declared himself President of
This event in U.S. history regarding the USS Maine was unfamiliar to me. I knew of the Spanish American War, but never
The Spanish American war of 1898 was primarily based on sugar and land, but none the less, also for freedom and rights for the blacks and mulatto minority. A war consisting of Cuba, Philippines island, Puerto Rico, Guam, and other islands. This war included many men such as Major Rowan and General Calixto Garcia. As a
I believe this was a perfect storm of sorts. Between the propaganda being circulated throughout the United States, and McKinley’s desire to satisfy the American People war was inevitable. In Jan of 1898 There was a riot in a Havana newspaper office. Mckinley ordered the Navy warship Maine to the Havana Harbor. This was
The Spanish-American War and World War1 were one of the most crucial moments in our history as Americans and the reasons we joined were for humanity and for our benefit. The U.S entered the Spanish American War and World War 1 for very similar reasons. They joined from innocent Americans getting killed or from being directly affected from the war, territory and resources, and unfair rules that hurt not just Americans but innocent people. These are the 3 main reasons why the U.S joined both of these wars.
The Spanish-American War of 1898 put an end to Spain’s colonial empire within the Western Hemisphere and put America in the new role as a global power. With the United States victory this produced a peace treaty which compelled the Spanish to relinquish any claims on Cuba. It also gave power over Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines to the United States (United States, United States Department of State, n.d.). During the conflict the independent state of Hawaii was annexed by the United States. The war gave the United States predominance within the Caribbean region and allowed us to pursue our economic and strategic interests in Asia.
In his fight for the island ’s freedom, Aguinaldo started a rebellion against the US army and soon enough the Philippine American war began. The instability in this island led to much debate over whether or not the annexation would benefit or detriment the Philippines.
McKinley was the first president to really showcase his progressive views. The public used the accidental sinking of the USS Maine to fuel their hatred toward Spain. McKinley gave an “ultimatum” or final choice to Spain: either give Cuba independence or face war with America. They did not agree, so the US declared war on April 25, 1898. The main reason behind this was imperialism.
The imperialistic mentality of the American government after the Civil War, led to some degree to the Spanish-American war that would render a great acquisition of land for the United States. However, imperialism would not be the sole factor that led to the war against Spain, but also the sympathy felt by the American government towards Cuba’s efforts in fighting for their independence; additionally, the United States would seek to protect its commercial interests (sugar) in the island. Therefore, after invoking the Spanish to secede from their brutal practices towards Cuban rebels and attain a peaceful end to the situation, the United States arbitrarily sent a navy ship, “The USS Maine” to monitor the area.
Even though it was most likely an accident and not an attack, the American people still blamed the Spanish. President McKinley, who was originally weary about going to war, asked congress for the declaration of war against Spain. The US declared with the Teller Amendment that its purpose in the war was not to annex Cuba after but to support their struggle for freedom. There are not many battles in this war but many were a success for the United States and had very little casualties. On May 1, 1898, the US Navy under Admiral George Dewey defeated the Spanish Fleet in Manila Bay and took the Philippines.
“Subsequent diplomatic failures to resolve the Maine matter, coupled with United States indignation over Spain’s brutal suppression of the Cuban rebellion and continued losses to American investment, led to the outbreak of the Spanish-American War in April 1898” (History 1). They were justified in doing this because many people were killed, it caused problems not just with them, but with families and it affected the country. “…killing 260 of the fewer than 400 American crew members aboard” (History 1). This took away opportunity for 260
Have you ever wondered how Hispanics have helped our country? Even though there may not be many visible contributions, they have done more than we can imagine. One thing that they did was help us win the US independence as well as Texas. A subsidy that we received from them was a lot of money to refund the American military for the Battle of Yorktown. A third and final helpful hand that they gave us was in World War II.
Americans learned more about what happened during the Spanish American War through articles that exposed the violent tensions in Cuba. The Americans then felt the need that we should help Cuba against Spain. The Americans in power wanted to remain neutral, while the public wanted to go to war. The U.S. Maine was a battleship that was sent to Cuba to spy on them and understand the situation in person. While the ship was there, it mysteriously blew up, the blame was put on Spain for the explosion.
Hostilities grew and President McKinley sent the battleship Maine to protect Americans on the Island. On February 15th 1898, the Maine exploded and sank in Havana and the cause was not determined. McKinley, however not interested with the idea of war, declared war on Spain on April 20th 1898. The war took place in the Philippines, where Secretary of War Theodore Roosevelt led attack of the Spanish in Manila. United States military moved quickly through the Island and took San Juan Hill in July 1st 1898.
In 1890 the U.S. went into war with spain for many reason for example. yellow journalism, imperialism and the sinking of the Maine is what caused the American population to want to go to war with Spain. yellow journalism is what got the rage in the american public. When the U.S.S. Maine was sunk word spread fast and the people were quick to blame the Spanish. Since the U.S had so many investments in Cuba it made one of the causes of the Spanish American War
Essay One: Imperialism Flies circle great black lumps as the moist air ravages the corpses. Dried blood soaked into the ground after faceless soldiers brutally destroyed its owners’ lives. These were the stories in the newspapers, the movies, and the films. Horrified by these crimes against humanity, the American public was spurred into action against the Spanish oppressors. the United States invaded Cuba in 1898 to pursue humanitarian efforts.
