The U.S. was justified in going to war with Spain. In 1898, the USS Maine exploded, killing more than half the crew. Most of Americans believed it was Spain’ fault. After this happened, people wanted revenge. “Subsequent diplomatic failures to resolve the Maine matter, coupled with United States indignation over Spain’s brutal suppression of the Cuban rebellion and continued losses to American investment, led to the outbreak of the Spanish-American War in April 1898” (History 1). They were justified in doing this because many people were killed, it caused problems not just with them, but with families and it affected the country. “…killing 260 of the fewer than 400 American crew members aboard” (History 1). This took away opportunity for 260
American journalists reported what was happening and Americans became enraged at Spain. The Yellow Press exaggerated what was happening in Cuba, which made Americans more man than they probably should have bee. Spain decided to give limited sovereignty to Cuba, but the USA did not agree with this; the USA said Spain should fully withdraw from Cuba. President William McKinley did not want to go to war, but a large portion of America wanted to help the Cubans. On April 24, 1898, Spain declared war on the United States of America.
The war mainly started because of Cuba’s struggle for independence. Spain wasn't treating Cuba fair and equally, and that’s why they wanted to become independent; so General Valeriano Weyler was sent to stop the revolts in Cuba. The turning point in the Spanish American War is the sinking of the U.S.S Maine. The U.S.S Maine was a battleship sent to Cuba to protect American interest. The sinking of the U.S.S Maine is important because it served as a cause for the Spanish American War, which changed who properly owned Guam, Puerto Rico and let Cuba become independent.
Robert Ressetar The American people where thirsty for blood. The Spanish American war was a war declared by the people of the United States. Americans believed win their hearts we were a world power, now they had to show the world. There were many things and propaganda that led to this war. I believe that the Propoganda that was being circulated throughout the country was probably one of the single biggest factors of the war.
America’s entrance in the Spanish-American War was primarily due to the random explosion of the USS Maine on February 15, 1898, which killed 267 service men aboard. This attack leads to Congress’s vote to go to war against Spain. The United States’ desire to expand military overseas also played a part in the American entrance to this war. Economically speaking, the U.S. wanted Cuban crops to come to America, and not only Spain. “The war enabled the United States to establish its predominance in the Caribbean region and to pursue its strategic and economic interests in Asia” (“Spanish-American War”).
On the pitch black night of February 15th, 1898 the very elegant USS Maine was demolished by a sneakily placed mine left in the beautiful Havana Harbour. A lot of eyewitnesses have 100% confirmed that this was a crime done by the mischievous people of Spain! The massive explosion happened at 9:40pm. The Spanish have just brutally murdered two hundred sixty innocent men! These amazing people have never attempted anything that would go against the dirty people of Spain in their life!
The first reason is the main reason the U.S joined the Spanish-American war is territory and resources. According to a document by Jason Colby, Spain took control of Cuba, the Philippines Islands, and Puerto Rico. The U.S was worried that
Americans are actively provocative Spanish. Spanish-American War was an example of realism has three reasons. The first reason is Spain was not too friendly. Secondly, The Maine actually exploded from a random combustion of one of the coal furnaces next to a gunpowder magazine. The third reason is that US is fighting hunger,
The American public was outraged. The American Yellow Press released, “Remember the Maine! To hell with Spain!” Most Americans believed it was Spain’s fault for the explosion. It created tension between America and Spain.
Spanish-American war of 1896, Cuba was the last remaining colony of Spain in the new world. Cuban sugar cane workers were rebelling because of poverty and bad conditions. William Randolph Hearst, a sensationalist reporter who was investigating the war, sent an artist to Cuba to sketch the action. Unfortunately for him, nothing violent was happening, so Hearst exaggerated the truth. Pressured into war the president sends the Maine to harbor, but it suddenly exploded.
US Justified or Not Justified War, bloodshed, trespassing, death, all this was caused by the US going to war for no reason. During this time, many interesting things happened. In 1848 the first baseball diamond was laid out in New York. Another interesting fact was that Mexico was a Catholic country, while America was a mostly Protestant country. This caused a lot of anger among the two countries.
It was April 25, 1846. The Mexican military invaded Texas, a disputed territory. When the U.S. military came to attack, the Mexicans killed 16 Americans. This is one of the many events leading to the Mexican American War. The Mexican-American War was a major war over Mexico’s land.
Americans learned more about what happened during the Spanish American War through articles that exposed the violent tensions in Cuba. The Americans then felt the need that we should help Cuba against Spain. The Americans in power wanted to remain neutral, while the public wanted to go to war. The U.S. Maine was a battleship that was sent to Cuba to spy on them and understand the situation in person. While the ship was there, it mysteriously blew up, the blame was put on Spain for the explosion.
Justified is defined as having, done for, or marked by a good or legitimate reason. Texas won its independence in 1836. America’s wars are often very controversial. The United States was justified in going to war with Mexico because of three main reasons: Americans were killed, Texas was already annexed, and Manifest Destiny allows it.
When Mexico gained its independence from Spain in 1821, a string of ruthless dictators and weak presidents made Mexico an easy target for its powerful neighbor, the United States. The US swooped in to expand its territory and its popular institution of slavery. By doing so, the US started a war with Mexico that was justified for illegitimate reasons. The Mexican-American War was not justified because the US took Mexico’s land for the expansion of slavery, and justified their taking advantage of Mexico when it was politically weak by hiding behind Manifest Destiny.
the United States used propaganda targeting humanitarian concerns to incite the public to declare war. As Americans were interested in the Cuban Revolution, sensational journalism only raised tensions between the United States and the Spanish monarchy, which would help cause the war. While General Weyler
