Atticus Finch, the best lawyer in Maycomb, was sitting nervously in his chair as he waited for the town Judge to arrive in court. Tom Robinson, Atticus’s client, was scared of being proved guilty of raping Mayella ,and also beating her. As the judge came in the courtroom, you could feel how tense it was between the two defendants. The judge sat down and started talking to both of them. He ask Mayella what happened first. Her response was that “Tom had raped me and afterwards beat me.” The judge already started to believe her over Tom because of two reasons. One was because she still had bruises on her face ,and the other reason is because Tom is black and Mayella is white. This town was very racist because of the time being. It was
Finch was clearly trying to show that Ewell could have beaten Mayella. Ewell claimed, “Tricky lawyers like Atticus Finch took advantage of him all the time with there tricking ways.” When Mayella was called up to the stand, she was extremely emotional. Judge Taylor, who runs his court with alarming informality, was the one that consoled her. The judge occasionally has his feet propped up and appears to be dozing.
This past week has been rough for the Robinson family. After a racist jury choose to make an innocent man guilty things went from bad to worse. Atticus Finch was chosen to defend Tom Robinson. This particular case was against Mayella Ewell, a white woman. As a black man Tom was already at a disadvantage.
Mr. Finch justly argues the innocence of Tom even though most of the townspeople would convict a black man regardless of the evidence. Risking almost everything for the Tom Robinson trial, Atticus keeps his composure and bravely finishes the case even though he knows there is no hope. In fact, Atticus exhibits calmness, courage, and justice as he works and lives with the people of Maycomb. First, Atticus is a calm person.
Scout is the victim of an attack and her father courageously fights to protect her. Atticus Finch is a lawyer who defends a black man, Tom Robinson, for being accused of assaulting and raping a girl, Mayella Ewell. Nevertheless, Atticus stands up for Tom and chooses to be his lawyer when he knows Tom will lose. Likewise, Atticus boldly shows his true strength and not just his job. Atticus Finch is an example of a true mockingbird in To Kill A Mockingbird.

Despite racial inequalities in the South, Atticus sticks to his own morals and agrees to be the defending lawyer for Tom Robinson, a black man being accused of raping a white woman. Although Atticus’ defense in court was thorough and clearly proved Tom’s innocence, the jury was prejudiced towards black folks and convicted Tom as guilty. Nonetheless, Atticus is still a hero despite losing the case. He has the courage to stand up for what he believes in, fights with reason rather than guns, and has utmost determination, making him a hero despite being just an average human being. Ultimately, his thoughts and actions set the stage for major changes in the meaning of equality throughout Maycomb County, changing lives of numerous people.
Atticus a well known lawyer in the little town of Maycomb in the book To Kill a Mockingbird. He comes up against a tough, rock solid case including an African American man and a young woman who grew up in poverty. Atticus has trust in the power in using the three models of rhetoric. Ethos,Pathos and Logos to prove to the jury that his client is innocent and can walk out of court that day a free man. (Lee).

Tom Robinson is a young African-American who's been accused of raping and abusing Mayella Ewell, a young and closeted white woman. Racial discrimination is hinted throughout Tom’s trial as Atticus Finch explains to Jem that a white man’s word will always win over that of a black man’s - "... In our courts, when it's a white man's word against a black man's, the white man always wins. They're ugly, but those are the facts of life" (220). Atticus explains to Jem that in the courts of Maycomb, a black man’s state of innocence or guilt is truly determined by a white man’s testimony.
