How Did The Great War Change The Relationship Between England And The American Colonies

The French and Indian war was a war fought between France and Britain. “This New World conflict marked another chapter in the long imperial struggle between Britain and France.” (History.com Staff, 2009) This war lasted for seven years (also called the Seven Years’ War) beginning in 1753 to 1763. This long lasting battle began the changes within these countries to form.

The french and Indian war alter the political and ideological relations between Great Britain and the american colonies in many different ways. The war enable Britain to be more involved with colonial political and economic affairs. After the war Britain also ended their policy of salutary neglect. After a while their plan to make money of the colonies soon lead to the revolutionary war because it increased tension and outrage among the american colonies.

The French were looking to expand their land at a place called the Ohio River Valley, so they would have more land for their people. The French threatened to take the land the British had already claimed. Numerous battles broke out between them, which lead to a war. William Pitt, the new British leader, managed to get more colonies to fight for the British. Britain's power grew significantly in numbers of soldiers, thus making the British a rising empire.

At the start of the French and Indian War the French owned a big majority of land but the during the war the French lost their land to the English. The Treaty of Paris in 1763 gave the English, the French land of North America (Doc A).

Realizing this King George III wanted to raise the taxes to help replenish the money that was lost during time and this is why the reason for the American Revolutionary War ultimately came down to money. France ceded Louisiana to the east of Mississippi River to the United Kingdom as compensation.

(170) Colonists fought against French and Native forces until the war was won by the British in 1759(170). Northern colonists who fought in the war left with a sense of nationality towards England. Not only had the war left a patriotic feeling with Britain but also brought the colonies closer together.

In the war, British American and New France fought, with heavy involvement from Native American allies, over regions in the New World, such as the Ohio River Valley. Britain ultimately won the war after capturing the city of Quebec. As a result of the war, the Treaty of Paris was signed, leading to France losing all most its North American possessions east of the Mississippi. France was also required to hand over French Louisiana to Spain.

The first tax was the the tax on sugar, which was put on the colonists to help pay off the war debt.

The unfair taxation of the colonists is what sparked this war; there were also several other political and economic factors, which also played a large part.

The French and Indian War can be argued to have the most effect on altering the relations between Britain and the Colonies. The relationship between these two power houses began very subtle, as England followed through with a policy of salutary neglect toward the Colonies. The consequence of the war caused the Political and the Economic state of Britain to changed dramatically, causing them to act differently towards the Colonies. This made the Ideologies of the colonies change greatly. Becoming a winner of a mass of land was great to reward to Britain, but this caused them to change the way that they were going to govern, especially in North America.

While the war against Britain and France escalated in Europe, it eventually reached America and this became known as the Seven Years’ war which lasted from 1756-1763. Before the war Britain had little interest in America but after the war, the war had brought forth a moment of truth in regards to the interactions of Great Britain and America. For some colonial groups the war affected their relationships with England while others continued the same. Britain was very successful in the war, but with victory came debt.
