During the late 1800’s the US government attempted to bring peace back to the west by reducing territorial conflict between Indian tribes and western settlers. Indian tribes were to be given land and promised goods to keep conflict at a minimum; however, pressure from the settlers and failure to provide the promised goods sparked conflicts. Sarah Winnemucca Hopkins and the people of her tribe were some of those affected by the reservation policy’s failures. Sarah Winnemucca Hopkins did have a claim to demand her tibe’s land back because of her background, reservation laws in place, and reperations for how badly her tribe was treated. Sarah had a claim to demand the tribe’s land back simply due to her background. Sarah Winnemucca is an Indian woman, part of the Piute tribe. The Piute tribe, as well as many other tribes, were murdered by the US army. The Indian reservations are not being protected enough which can be seen by Sarah saying, “enroachments of the white settlers”1. According to Sarah she is the “grandaughter of Capatian Truckee, who promised friendship for his tribe to General Fremont, whom he guided into California and served through the Mexican war”2. She had such an influential …show more content…
In the petition for the reuinion and land rights of the Piute tribe, Sarah Winnemucca states that “the tribe of Piute Indians . . . has of late been deprived of the Malheur Reservation decreed to them by President Grant.”5 The Piute tribe legally is supposed to have the Malheur reservation so it makes sense for them to get it back. Also, a part of the Piute tribe was taken away from the rest of the tribe and transferred to the Yakima reservation, Sarah also includes in the petition that they should be reunited. They were pledged to see their families by the Secretary of the Interior as well even though they were being seperated from
Hello Tamara Thank you for the insight on the federal Indian termination policies durning the 1950’s,and our selfish acts in attempting to move Indians off reservations and into subruban areas, I feel that justice could never be made for the todays native americans simply because the suffering we put their ansestors through could never take away the tears or pain we inflicted on them ,even though our federal government had even initiated a policy of removal as well as termination of the native americans under this particular policy that was souly created so the Native American people would no longer be government wards on reservations which todays era they are entiltled for the most psrt “subject to the same laws and entitled to the same privileges
Two children were murdered at the beginning of the invasion and the rest of the family was marched to Canada with the rest of the captives. Eventually, John and four of his children were released but his daughter, Eunice Williams chose to remain imprisoned by
In 1742 the chief of Onondaga of the Iroquois Confederacy knew that his land that the people shared would become more valuable than it has ever been. (Doc B)The reason for this was because the “white people” also known as the Americans wanted the land of the chief. The feelings of the Chief result in complaining to the representatives of Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virginia,
Roger Williams, once a prominent member of the Puritans in Massachusetts, and the other Puritan leaders acted very differently towards the Indians. He became a confirmed Separatist. He came up with the idea of separation of church and state. He also believed the Indians had rights, as they were the original inhabitants of the land.
During the early to mid 1800s, the colonization of “Indians” and subordination of “women’s rights in the American society,” was very essential to those in authority. They were perceived as a mere means to an end by promises of a better life in exchange for “land and work.” Although locals complied, those in offices took advantage by using antagonistic tactics in achieving wealth, power, and ownership. However, these actions lead to “The First Seminole War, The Monroe Doctrine, Andrew Jackson’s leadership, The Indian Removal Act, The California Gold Rush, The Seneca Falls Convention, and the Birth of the Republican Party.” Although some Americans have been perceived as heroes, their actions have said otherwise about their character.
Manifest Destiny was the 19th-century doctrine or belief that the expansion of the US throughout the American continents was both justified and inevitable. Of course there were already Native Americans living in the area. The new people in the U.S. wanted to push the Native Americans out and make room for their new settlements. Not all of the Native Americans were very happy about being pushed out of their homes. The Native Americans were affected greatly by Manifest Destiny.
The United States sent armies into the Native American lands, mistreating the Native Americans, and caused trouble against them by sparkling conflicts and wars. “It is not, of course, to be understood that the government of the United States is at the mercy of Indians; but thousands of its citizens are, even thousands of families. Their exposed situation on the extreme verge of settlement affords a sufficient justification to the government for buying off the hostility of the Savages, excited and exasperated as they are…by the invasion of their hunting grounds and the threatened extinction of their game.” (Document 4) The United States government introduced policies for Native Americans to have a better life, but in fact, they kept them in

The Credit Mobilier scandal occurred in 1872 to 1873 and destroyed many careers of several politicians. Stockholders formed a railroad company, and the Credit Mobilier. They built railroads and sold the shares and even gave them away to congress man, to insure they wouldn’t be shut down or voted against. The Cherokee women wrote a petition urging their men to work against the removal. They make note of how they never believed in hostility with the white settlers. It is of their belief that they need to keep the land for the prosperity of their children and their existence as a whole. (197-198). The Cherokee women also remark how they and many other Native Americans have given up substantial amounts of their land, that this is their country by natural right.
The Peoria Tribe of Indians of Oklahoma is a confederation tribe that has been relocated several times, was affected significantly by the Civil War, and has overcome many adversities. The Peoria Tribe’s original language was Algonquian due to it’s pre-columbian ancestors, which is no longer used. The small amount of the tribe that lives in Oklahoma speak Cahokia, Moingwea, and Tamaroa. The name “Peoria” comes from French woodsmen and means, “he comes carrying a pack on his back”. The tribe adopted the religion of Christianity, specifically Roman Catholicism, and the traditional tribal religions.
In Life Among the Piutes, sarah winnemucca hopkins describes what happens when soldiers came to their reservation based off what white settlers tell the government. The most shocking instance of this happened when Winnemucca encountered a group of soldier who told her the white settlers accused the natives of stealing cattle, “the soldiers rode up to their [meaning the Piute’s] encampment and fired into it, and killed almost all the people that were there… after the soldiers had killed but all bur some little children and babies… the soldiers took them too… and set the camp on fire and threw them into the flames to see them burned alive”(78). This is an abhorrent act that is unthinkable in a functioning society. The natives had done nothing but want to hold some shred of land from the settlers who had taken everything from them and are exterminated like vermin. This was something that stayed hidden from many white settlers because of its barbarism and by exposing it Winnemucca truly educates the reader, past and present, on how natives are
Throughout the 19th century Native Americans were treated far less than respectful by the United States’ government. This was the time when the United States wanted to expand and grow rapidly as a land, and to achieve this goal, the Native Americans were “pushed” westward. It was a memorable and tricky time in the Natives’ history, and the US government made many treatments with the Native Americans, making big changes on the Indian nation. Native Americans wanted to live peacefully with the white men, but the result of treatments and agreements was not quite peaceful. This precedent of mistreatment of minorities began with Andrew Jackson’s indian removal policies to the tribes of Oklahoma (specifically the Cherokee indians) in 1829 because of the lack of respect given to the indians during the removal laws.
