How I Learned To Read And Write Essay

For me, the reading and comprehension isn't that difficult. Its more of learning who is who. For example, when someone is talking with no quotation at the end, its hard for me understand who is talking. Throughout the year of 2017-2018, I need to find a way to keep track of all the characters and understand who is who. This will help me later in the future while I am reading harder books for literature.

William Stafford’s style of writing cultivated me in many ways. Throughout this piece, there has been many cliffhangers which want you to keep on reading. Every journey begins with one simple step. In Thomas Foster's, How to Read Literature Like a Professor, the first chapter Every Trip Is a Quest (Except for when it’s not), he explains that almost all stories have a quest, be it given or underlying. Each quest contains a quester, a place to go, a stated reason to go there, challenges they face, and the real reason to go (Foster 3). In Foster’s other book, Reading the Silver Screen, it shows the purpose behind their stories and the message behind the film by laying the rules down. In Frederick Douglass's essay "Learning to read and write” he recalls the journey to enlightenment showcasing the emotions of joy, hunger, heartache and hope. For example learning to read sparked an unstoppable joy for knowledge. In addition the discovery of that knowledge found Douglass hungry for more. Also the quest for intelligence came at a price causing him a great amount of heartache. Finally a simple thought of the future brought the hope that ultimately inspired him to persevere and succeed in learning to read and write.

In the essays, “Reading to Write” by Stephen King, “The Joy of Reading and Writing: Superman and Me” by Sherman Alexie, “Learning to Read” Malcolm X, and “Learning to Write” by Frederick Douglas have three things in common. In each essay Reading has contributed towards the authors life leading to benefit from learning to read, allowing them to leave a legacy behind. In each essay the authors has thought their self how unlike Frederick Douglass. For Stephen King, reading has done a lot for him. King stated, “Every book you pick up has its own lesson or lessons, and quite often the bad books have more to teach than the good ones” (221).

Writing process is difficult to realize since it requires a lot of skills and knowledge. Definitely, not many of us can start writhing right away without having any problems such as grammar, vocabulary or organization. However, a person can become a better writer if he or she will practice writing every day and will pay attention to his writing problems. To become a good writer, I have to improve my grammar, follow specific steps in writing process, and avoid using similar transitional words. Grammar is the number one problem in the writing process and causes me a lot of issues.
