Immunizations can save a child’s life; due to the medical advances that have taken place, kids are now protected from many illness/ diseases. At one point in time, Polio was a horrible illness that is now preventable by simply receiving a shot (USDHHS, n.d.). Immunizations protect not only the individual receiving the vaccination, but others as well. Certain individuals are not suitable for specific vaccinations, therefore, if everyone else has the vaccination, the people who cannot are more likely to be safe from the illness (USDHHS, n.d). Generally, immunizations are safe, effective, cheaper in the long run, and can save families time.

Vaccines have and always will be a huge topic. There are different reasons why people do become vaccinated, and there are also reasons of why some people do not believe in being vaccinated. As a medical assistant, we need to be respectful to all our patients. We are not to argue with our patients because of something we think they should have done. We can provide the patient with facts about what has been found about certain diseases and if there is a vaccine available for that disease.

Vaccination has sparked heated debate since its development amongst the following groups; parents, naturopaths, medical professionals, etc. Fuel has been added to the fire of the vaccine debate by the media and anti-vaxxer fear mongering tactics, making it hard for those considering vaccination, to decipher fact from myth. It is vital that we first understand the facts rather than believing the latest rumor before making an informed decision to vaccinate or not.

Vaccines and immunization do have many benefits. Though Americans have the tendency to just get them because they have to rather than them needing them.

However, there are more serious side effects that could require hospitalization, or result in death.

Parents and guardians believe myths and Facebook posts instead of well educated doctors to determine if their child should be vaccinated. This is a huge mistake! By not vaccinating your children properly you are not only putting them at risk, but the people around them that they encounter daily (CDC). Parents should not be able to make up an uneducated excuse to keep their children from being properly vaccinated. Immunizations need to be completely required for students to attend a public school in order to keep their local community disease

It was understandable as to why parents who viewed this documentary would soon be struck with fear and hesitance of the DTP vaccine. This fear-inducing media is what is still seen in modern society. Highly influential people, such as actors and actresses, will openly show their support of the anti-vaccine campaign through the media. They use their influence to spread the same fears they hold of vaccinations. Just like in 1982 with the DTP vaccination, many vaccines in modern society are being feared and therefore not being administered, as they should.

This reasoning would only add extra stress for families trying to find schools for their children and could cost parents more money than just being able to send their child to a free public school without fear. The next most controversial concern parents have regards the ingredients in some vaccinations.

I take the position that vaccinations are safe and the benefits outweigh the risks. The issue of whether or not to vaccinate children has been a controversial topic for many years. Vaccinations have been described as one of the greatest achievements to public health saving millions of lives by reducing or eradicating infectious diseases. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that children be vaccinated to protect against the spread of disease. According to these agencies vaccines are safe and non-toxic with only some mild side effects.

Many people may think that vaccination is a bad thing, that instead of preventing it causes illness, that is not natural. Natural or not, there are many reasons as to why we should vaccinate us and the younger generation. Most of the time children don’t like vaccination because it hurt, but is the responsibility of a parent to seek the wellbeing of his or her child. Vaccination it’s a preventive measure of various diseases. Unfortunately, things like the anti-vaccination movement, the misinformation on the Internet, and the believe that vaccination causes more damage than is worth, have led our society to think that it’s right not to vaccinate.
