Tartuffe is an excellent example of a neoclassical drama seeing that to be perfect is to be inhuman. Human nature is complete with many flaws and imperfections, same way as represented in the play "Tartuffe", by Moliere. As a result, “Tartuffe” is a really good example to present the basic flaw in human nature. This flaw is shown through two characters of the play, Orgon and Madame Pernelle , the mother of Orgon. These two are blind to the truth regarding Tartuffe and fall victim to his manipulation. The fact that these two lack to see the truth is a basic human flaw not only that, but as well as a major theme of the play. In fact, Mariane is really unhappy over the marriage to Tartuffe proposed by her father. She directly does not reject because she is afraid, even though deep inside her heart she wants to, but her only action at the time is to fall at her father’s feet and beg him to change his mind, and let her marry the man she was promised to and loves.
In addition, Tartuffe's appearance is almost destroyed by the son of Orgon, Damis, he doesn't realize Damis is hiding while he is confessing his love for Elmire, the wife of Orgon. But lucky for Tartuffe, Orgon doesn't believe his son, not only that it yells at him but Orgon also voids all of Damis' birthright and gives it to Tartuffe.
However, as the play progresses, Orgon's view of Tartuffe changes after refusing to see the fact that Tartuffe is a hypocrite and won't believe it until he sees it with his own eyes near the end of the play. When he hides himself listen in on the conversation between the two, Tartuffe and Elmire. And later, when Madame Pernelle returns, Orgon tries to tell her about Tartuffe but she won't believe it. Contrasting Moliere 's "Tartuffe" and Voltaire 's "Candide" , each author took a different approach in expressing their true opinions of institutional religion. In "Tartuffe", the main idea of the poem comes from hypocrisy of moderation and religion. In the beginning, we find Madame Pernelle criticizing Orgon 's family and fellow associates about their way of thinking and living. She talks about how they are not living as Tartuffe is and how they are fools to do other wise. In reality, Tartuffe is an ungodly hypocrite who uses his priest identity to mask his crimes and true identity.
Armand’s father had brought him home from paris, when he was eight, after his mother died. He came from a wealthy family. According to the Armand’s father thought of Desiree didn’t seem like he was happy because the way he grew up, he wanted someone from the same wealth as them. After they had gotten married and they were expecting a baby, the day had come of the birth of the child Mrs. Valmonde was surprised about the baby when she saw it because perhaps the kid didn’t look like one of the parent’s. “ Marriage, and later the birth of his so had softened Armand Aubigny’s imperious and exacting nature greatly.”
The role that King Louis XIV plays in Tartuffe, although not a character himself, affects the whole outcome of the play. King Louis XIV was an absolute monarch and was responsible for restoring order in society. The age of reason, 1660-1805, was a time to restore order while finding humor in those who stray away from order. King Louis was responsible for ensuring the safety and order of the country, and we come to learn that his power spreads much further than suspected. By divine right and being an offstage presence, King Louis XIV has the ability to control and assist everyone, whether it is warranted or not.
While reading Tartuffe, I was constantly dumbfounded by the prevalence in the world today of Moliere’s, comedically portrayed, accusations regarding ignorance in arranged marriage, social class dynamics and religious hypocrisy. Moliere created the characters to the complete contrast to what society saw them as, which was intriguing and comedic. He also displayed the average practices, such as planned marriage, to be disgraceful and shameful. Lastly, but most prevalently, Moliere saturated the hypocrisy of religion by later in the story revealing the religious character’s deceitful and malign nature. In this essay, I will be using historic and literary theory to examine Moliere’s interesting views of such practices and the satire involved.
Tartuffe went through many revisions until it was allowed to be shown. Tartuffe address gender roles and stereotypes with its characters. For example, Dorine states: “But now that they’re no longer what they were she quits a world that is fast quitting her. And wears a veil to conceal her bankrupt beauty and her lost appeal.” This line by Dorine speaks to how women are forgotten about in a sexual way once they reach a certain age in the 17th century.

Damis tries to tell him the truth of what he has just seen and heard, but Orgon is not having it. “Orgon's desire to retain Tartuffe is a function--a reaction and an invitation--of others' desire to be rid of him, of which Damis’ desire is the most strident, the most like the desire of his father in its imperious violence”(Mckenna). Throughout Molière’s ‘Tartuffe” the true intentions of multiple characters are consistently questioned. Different characters involve themselves in self-made delusions for specific reasons, causing the label of ‘hypocrite’ to become a significantly used word. This use of the word ‘hypocrite’ throws everything off balance, forcing the audience to question every statement/event deciding whether or not they are truly sincere. Moliere’s use of hypocrisy when describing Tartuffe brings immediate awareness to the text involving central theme of reason verses emotion, deciding whether or not a characters actions were based on their pure heart or their greed.
She uses Tartuffe’s lust for her as an advantage. Orgon refuses to believe anyone unless he has physical proof. Elmire uses deception to bring Tartuffe’s downfall and succeeds. Orgon refuses to listen to any of the men, but this time it is woman who uncovers the truth. During this century woman were still considered inferior than men, however Elmire contradicts that.
Orgon is blinded by his admiration of Tartuffe. Without Orgon seeing for himself, he would never believe that Tartuffe could have deceived him. Moliere makes Tartuffe betrays others by his remarkable gestures of humiliation and aid. Moliere uses satire to emphasize the truth about Tartuffe’s lust for Elmire.
In fact, the text before the actual story explains that Molière uses satire and humor to “comment on his own immediate social scene, imagining how universal patterns play themselves out in a specific historical context” (Molière). Because of this, the king of France was made by the Catholic Church to have Tartuffe banned. He is seen, at first, by some of the household members, specifically Orgon and his mother, Madame Pernelle, as this pure, kind-hearted man. As the story progresses, it slowly becomes apparent that Tartuffe is not the person some characters have made him out to be. For example, the first time we get a feel for the idea is in scene 1.4 where Dorine begins to list off Tartuffe’s action as Orgon asks, “Ah, and Tartuffe?”
