Philosophy of Nursing Everyone’s values and beliefs about the profession of nursing are all different. The four concepts of nursing are interrelated and all mean something different to every person, too. Throughout this paper, I will be reflecting on my values and beliefs about nursing through the four concepts while comparing them to a nursing theorist with views that are most similar to my own.

It is the person and their physical, emotional, and psychological needs that are the basic focus of nursing’s attention. In order to care for a patient, the nurse must incorporate all these needs. For example, providing reassurance with an anxious patient who just finished hip surgery. Care also plays a major part when taking care of a unique patient. Caring influences my personal philosophy because it is the most important aspect of nursing.

The Roper, Logan and Tierney model helps nurses to focus on patient care by following the fundamental rights of maintaining independence of the ADL’s without diminishing dignity. Recognising that their knowledge, attitudes and behaviour may be influenced by biological, psychological, sociocultural, environmental and politico-economic factors and respecting their decisions in such. Overcoming and preventing illness to maintain independence is the nurses key focus in delivering patient care which follows the direction of the RLT model of nursing (Roper, Logan and Tierney, 2001).

Nursing education plays a significant role in the achievement the caring concept and is accentuated throughout the nurse's professional career (Labrague, Mcenroe-Petitte, Papathanasiou, Edet, & Arulappan, 2015). Patient satisfaction is a measurable component used to determine the care received from nurse clinicians. Stroehlein (2016) indicates that although there is a large constituent of many occupations, caring in the nursing occupation assumes an exceptional meaning with a higher purpose. Caring is multifaceted and comparable have determined individuals whose intention is to open the eyes of the society through rendering high quality patient care (Stroehlein, 2016).

My perspective on holistic nursing and self-care Introduction In context of World Health Organization, self-care is often defined as activities individuals, families and communities undergoes with the motive of increasing health, overcoming disease, limiting illness and restoring health ("What is", n.d.). The knowledge and skills are gained from both professional and lay experiences for such activities. According to Klebanoff & Hess (2013), holistic nursing is defined as all nursing practice that has only motive of healing the whole person as its prime goal. A holistic nurse is like a licensed nurse who often incorporates a “mind-body-spirit-emotion-environment” approach to the practice of traditional nursing.

Nursing assessment has a significant role in providing effective, accurate and safe nursing care in clinical practice. Nursing assessment is the first stage of the Nursing Process. It is used to explore the physical, psychological, spiritual and social aspect of the patient’s life. It is therefore a holistic and systematic guide for nurses to obtain a greater understanding of their patient’s wants and needs. It is the underlying foundation of the process, on which other phases of the process are based upon (Foster & Hawkins, 2005).

It is very easy to get wrapped up in the day to day tasks that we complete as nurses. But in order to give our patients the best possible care, we must look at our day through a holistic lens. The following essay will outline the theory as created by the “lady with the lamp” Florence Nightingale. We will look at the different components that are important to a patient’s health and outline on to incorporate these components into current practice.
