In the book The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, Rebecca Skloot goes on a lengthy journey in order to uncover the past of one of the greatest advances in medical history. Through the process she discovered that there was more to the story than just one woman, and this would lead her on an international adventure to discover the truth. Throughout the book many issues are present, many of them are quite severe, these issues include abuse and racial issues. To begin, there are multiple forms of abuse that are present in the book, and these include types of abuse such as physical, emotional, sexual and even abuse of power. Jacobs shows the varying perspective on what having the “right” morals is during this time by highlighting severity of what would happen to slaves that tried to escape and showing how slaves lived their daily lives as compared to their white counterparts. Even without reading this book, having knowledge about how slaves were treated and the laws that surrounded the slavery era and post slavery times isn’t something that is taboo in our society today. This leads to the final section of Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl by Harriet Ann Jacobs: attaining her freedom. According to Christina Tilghman, there is a pattern of growth in “self-reliance and decision-making” in slave narratives (Tilghman, 4) which is most definitely found in this section of the novel. Jacobs planned the entire escape on her own, and worked hard to find a secure hiding place. She had to fight temptations of coming in contact with her grandmother, and put herself in danger in several different ways, including being permanently disabled by a poisonous reptile bite.

At age six, her parents and her mother's mistress died, and she was sold to a man named Dr.Flint, a cruel and abusive man. She tried to escape, but during this time, it was easier said than done. This book follows Linda Brent and her true stories during slavery, and readers can truly understand what life was like for female slaves. While following Linda through her experiences, the author can convey an array of emotions using ethos, juxtaposition, and syntax.

Harriet Jacobs was a slave from a southern plantation in North Carolina. She wrote about her experiences in the inhuman system of slavery. In 1861, Harriet Jacobs published Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, Written by Herself under a pseudonym of Linda Brent. Jacobs was one of the first and few women to write about her experiences as a woman slave. Harriet Jacobs account reveals how destructive the slave system was towards the slaves and the masters and mistresses who owned slaves.

Harriet Jacobs, or Linda Brent as she liked to be called, was born into slavery in North Carolina in 1813. She grew up really happy, unaware of her status of being a slave. When she was 6 years old, her mother died and since then she learnt of her status of being a slave (Jacobs, 9). She had a very hardworking father who was also a slave and a younger brother called William, whom she loved so much. Her maternal grandmother helped to raise her and William.

Both narratives paint a more complex and complete image of the experiences of slaves than readers typically are exposed to. While there are many experiences that overlap between male and female slaves in both narratives, they also depict the disturbing differences between the genders in slavery. While Jacobs and Douglass discuss similar experiences with slave owners, beatings, and daily horrors, Jacobs brings up an additional horrifying reality in her narrative. In the excerpt from the Narrative Life of Frederick Douglass, Douglass describes the inhuman life for the enslaved people on Colonel Lloyd’s plantation. First, Douglass mentions that those enslaved are given the very minimum amount of resources. In addition, Douglass states that the enslaved were given two shirts, one pair of trousers, one jacket, one pair of stockings and one pair of shoes, these they have to wear for a year until the next allowance day. For children who can no longer wear their clothes were naked until the next allowance day. Second, the enslaved were lack of food, their monthly allowance of food contained eight pounds of pork or fish, and one bushel of corn meal.

As stated in the title, Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, the life of Harriet Jacobs is one of oppression and bondage. The incidents that occur are gendered, meaning the threat of rape by her slave master and his jealousy over her happen because she is a woman. Though Jacobs does not have agency or freedom over her body, there are two instances where she does have the freedom to choose, specifically in romantic choice. These two incidents allow Jacobs to challenge her status as a slave and not only reclaim her autonomy, but her humanity as well. According to Jacobs, slavery should be abolished because, "slavery is a curse to the whites as well as to the blacks” (Jacobs, 462) because of the intensive abuse imposed on all those involved in slavery. Jacobs used an exhaustive list of examples of physical, sexual, emotional and mental abuse in the book.
