Indentured Servants In Virginia During The 1670's

This is a picture of the hired servants working on a farm in Jamestown because the slaves were not yet introduced. The servants are harvesting tobacco on a farm in the southern colonies, where they depended on large-scale servants and cash crops, such as tobacco, for their economy. The servants will be working for the landlord for some years. They signed a contract that would work on a farm for a few years and then their freedom would be granted in America. These servants came in many sizes and colours.

In the early 1600’s, indentured servants, usually someone from a poor class in England would sell their labor for a term of four to seven years for the opportunity to travel across the Atlantic and be funded by a master/farmer. After reviewing “A Contract for Indentured Service (1635)” the blank contract I referenced indicates a term of four to seven years to be completed. The contract promises to pay the servant in meat, drinks, apparel and lodging during his time as an indentured servant. The second analysis consists of how extremely meticulous and successful the organization and division of labor among the southern plantations were. The authors Fogel and Engerman also describe slaves possessing, “an extraordinary intensity of labor”(283). In order to successfully keep the plantation running smoothly, Fogel and Engerman would argue that the best way to maintain control of slaves would be to give them management positions. In doing so, slaves would be able to manage themselves and also have opportunities to progress up the chain of command; which would result in them feeling content while letting the owner maintain complete control. As given per the scenario, being a young woman out to venture on my own, one of my key concerns would be safety. What colony will provide for me in security, economically, socially, and and maybe even religiously. Another large factor that comes into question is time. While reading about the early colonizations things changed vastly from one year to the next. These changes were based on wars, climate, political powers/influences, and relationships with nearby natives.

In 1607 in Jamestown, Virginia, 105 English settlers established a diplomatic relationship with Powhatan the Algonquian chief . The agreement was that the Native Americans would supply the English settler’s food, and the settlers would not mess with the natives land. Things were doing pretty good till the English settlers became forceful and impolite to the natives, they started treating them like garbage. The natives took it upon themselves and decided to let the settlers go hungry. That is when the battle began.

The process of black slavery taking route in colonial Virginia was slow. Black slavery mostly became dominant in the 1680s. Slaves became the main labor system on plantations. The amount of white indentured servants declined so the demand for black slaves became necessary in the mid-1660s. The number of white indentured servants that Virginia had up until the mid 1660s, was enough to meet white peoples labor needs.

I am enlightened by your desire to come join me here in Jamestown, but life has been a never ending roller coaster as the years slowly pass by. Some days I wonder if leaving the slums to avoid my peasant status was worth risking making an attempt at creating a new life in Jamestown. I have trouble falling asleep as I am persistently worrying about whether or not I will wake up the next morning, or if I will die in my sleep during a surprise Indian attack. Even tobacco alone cannot soothe my nerves and paranoia, nor can the money that has been produced from the tobacco market keep my mind in a state of peace. Even though the colony has recently prospered from the blooming tobacco business, I would strongly recommend for you all to refrain from coming here unless you enjoy an indentured servant life, constant Native American threats, and terrible living conditions.

In 1607, the first wave of colonial settlers arrived in Virginia and began to establish Jamestown. Many of the new settlers came from wealthy families never performing a day of manual labor. With agricultural farming, being the revenue source of the new colonial settlers there would soon be a great demand for labor. Contracts of indentures were expiring and with much devastation in England, there was a shortage of English servants.

By using this reference, it illustrated the severity of the alienation of blacks in the Southern United States. In 1619, a Dutch ship “introduced the first captured Africans to America, planting the seeds of a slavery system that evolved into a nightmare of abuse and cruelty that would ultimately divide the nation”. The Africans were not treated humanely, but were treated as workers with no rights. Originally, they were to work for poor white families for seven years and receive land and freedom in return. As the colonies prospered, the colonists did not want to give up their workers and in 1641, slavery was legalized.

Beginning in 1607, slavery arose as indentured servitude ended, as it was full of too many complications. Bacon’s rebellion proved that free labor is successful, as long as I was purely free and not reliant on the promise of land in the end. The accessibility and legality of slavery made it the perfect economical move to maintain the prospering cash crops of the North American colonies. In the 1700-1800’s, the use of African American slaves for backbreaking, unpaid work was at its prime. Despite the terrible conditions that slaves were forced to deal with, slave owners managed to convince themselves and others that it was not the abhorrent work it was thought to be. However, in the mid-1800’s, Northern and southern Americans were becoming more aware of the trauma that slaves were facing in the South. Soon, an abolitionist group began in protest, but still people doubted and questioned it.

Introduction: During the 1800’s, Slavery was an immense problem in the United States. Slaves were people who were harshly forced to work against their will and were often deprived of their basic human rights. Forced marriages, child soldiers, and servants were all considered part of enslaved workers. As a consequence to the abolition people found guilty were severely punished by the law.
