From 1865 to 1900, the rise of Industrial America occurred. In this time period, the railroad system was developed, new job opportunities sprung up left and right, and the American dream changed. Although the American society’s economy and standard of living seemed to prosper, it also allowed laborers’ lives to crumble, strikes occurred, children were left uneducated and forced to work in order to help support their families, and forced those families to get accustomed to squalid living conditions and hazardous working environments. The social classes developed. As the standard of living changed, so did the steps one family would need to take in order to survive. The rise of “railroad tycoons” and corruption made unfair wages paid to families even lower, forcing each member, including women and children, to support their families. This impacted numerous families negatively. Oftentimes, parents would work full days, only to come home at night to find their children asleep. “A stranger am I to my child; And he one to me” (Doc. #2) All these people had were the clothes on their backs and their families, but the labor system managed to change the meaning of family. …show more content…
Mary Paul, a laborer in a textile factory in Lowell, Massachusetts, wrote to her father “I have a very good boarding place, have enough to eat…” (Doc. #1) Nevertheless, it was not uncommon to find some conditions were horrifying. The laborers were angry that their children were risking their health working in dangerous conditions, they were tired, and they knew their hard work deserved a higher pay they may live off of. As stories of young girls getting their hair ripped out my machines, the lowering of wages, and monopolies stirred amongst laborers, strikes rose. Ones such as the Pullman strike arose because George Pullman lowered wages, but court injunctions forced laborers to continue to
With the rise of industrialization occurring during the late 19th century the conditions for laborers in any industry affected by this revolution worsened due to the demand for ever increasing efficiency. Industrialization occurring at the end of the 19th century created a degrading work environment that led laborers to unionize and demand the opposite. Along with better machinery that came with the industrial revolution, management practices also became more efficient. Due to the introduction of better machinery, the need for craft workers decreased by a margin and the need for workers without such skills increased by a larger margin (MindTap, 3.3). With the mixture of an echelon system of management and unskilled labor conflict arose and
What would the world be like if it was not industrialized? Between 1700-1900 industrialization had propelled Europe and the United States forward. Economic systems changed governments and helped societies succeed. Utopian ideas and industrialization led to progress in social life and influenced governments from the late 1700s early 1900s through progressive capitalism, new socialist ideas, and unproductive communism. Progressive capitalism changed the world.
Florence Kelley a United States social worker and reformer delivered a speech about child labor in 1905. In Kelley’s speech, she uses sophisticated word choice, ethics, and imagery to reveal her message about child labor particularly in six states. In Florence Kelley speech she uses specific word choices to explain the wages of men, women and youth. “Boys increase in the ranks of the breadwinners; but no contingent so doubles from census period to census period.”
Through the lost of over 450 million dollars through strikes, workers were finally being heard. It was only last few years of the nineteenth century that things began to change in industry. During the 1900s, attitudes towards labor began to change and the people started to accept the right of workers to organize and strike. During this time of change, Congress also introduced Labor Day. Since people were still not 100% equal, the vast majority of workers still held strikes and although it would still take some time for equality to be achieved, it would
The entire family worked and some had to work in worse or more dangerous working conditions than others. “‘ At the end of the week, he would carry home three dollars to his family, being his pay at the rate of five cents per hour just about his proper share of the total earnings of the million and three-quarters of children who are now engaged in earning their livings in the United States.’”(p.60). This quote shows how Stansislovas has to work in child labor to earn a living. Jurgis sprained his ankle during his job while he was working at the meat packing factory. Ona’s boss Phil Connor harassed and raped her against her own free will.
Before the late 1700s, Europe and America were chiefly agrarian rural societies. Most people had small workshops or worked out of their homes in what was called a cottage industry. Innovations such as the Water Frame, Spinning Jenny, and Steam Engine revolutionized the textile industry and culminated in a boost to the economy. These inventions sparked the beginning of the Industrial Revolution in England, and the new technology propelled the country's shift to a manufacturing and urban society. Eventually, the revolution spread to other countries.
The conclusion of the eighteenth century and the dawn of the nineteenth was a time of great growth of industry in America. There were many positives of this growth, and many negatives. One positive were that everybody has more luxuries; another positive was that a lot of money came into the US. There were many severe negatives of the new growth of industry. Two of these were horrible factory conditions, and child labor.
The Industrial Revolution was a time of exponential growth in factories and agriculture through mechanization. Great Britain was the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution, beginning in the late 1700s till the mid-1800s. The mechanization of farming made growing crops more effective and efficient. Therefore fewer people were needed in agriculture and were forced into urbanization to find work. Cities population drastically increased during the revolution due to the immigration of rural workers.
Living in neighborhoods that can literally injure or murder a small child. In this paper I will go through how immigrants went through their daily life and how they adapted or not. I will first go over the living conditions that an immigrant worker would have to deal with. Most immigrants that worked at the Union Stockyards lived in places that were
Industrialization had a massive toll on America and Europe. Industrialization is the period of social and economic change that transforms a human group from an agrarian society into an industrial one, involving the extensive re-organization of an economy for the purpose of manufacturing. While some might argue that Industrialization had primarily positive consequences for society because there were many job opportunities, although it was actually a negative thing for society. Industrialization’s negative effects were that the children were forced to work so they could help out their families, air and water pollution, and horrible working/living conditions.
Child Labor Analysis Child Labor was one of Florence Kelley’s main topics at a speech she gave in Philadelphia during a convention of the National American Woman Suffrage Association. Kelley talks about all the horrors children were going through and the injustices they were suffering. She talks of the conditions children working in, the hours they were going in, and all in all, how wrong child labor was. Her purpose for this was to gain support of people to petition for the end of child labor. Kelley’s appeals to Ethos, Pathos and Logos through the use of great rhetoric is what allows her to achieve her purpose.
About one hundred thousand workers from six hundred different mills were on strike there. The strikers wanted their work cut from sixty to fifty-five hours. About a sixth of the strikers were children under sixteen.” ( 5, Josephson). As a result, she gathered a large group of mill children and their parents, shaming the mill owners of their actions.
Factory Conditions In the North By the mid 1800’s More and more things were made by machines. Clothes, shoes, Watches. These machines had to have operators.
Undoubtedly, America has confronted many adversities throughout its history. Moreover, during the course of these challenges America prevailed, and ultimately formed a nation that has the ability to continuously adapt. There exists a myriad of examples that would support this claim; however, this essay will focus on four major events occurring between the 1860’s and 1920’s. The first event is how the American social status changed before and after Abraham Lincoln’s assassination. The second event is how the Civil War played a role in creating a need for Reconstruction, and how Reconstruction culminated in the Industrial Revolution.
The Industrial Revolution, changes on the world The Industrial Revolution, a time of opportunity, a time of change. New ideas spread creating the world we know today. The Industrial Revolution started in the 1800’s, in Britain and had changed life as we know it. Many of the things we have today would not exist if it didn’t happen.
