According to World Federation of Music Therapy, music therapy is the professional use of music in medical, educational, and everyday environments with individuals or groups in order to optimize their quality of life and improve their physical and wellbeing (Haase, 2012). Music therapy provides a lot of benefits for people with and without disease. For example, Brian Jantz, a music therapist, said that it helps patients relieve from their stress and overcome fear (Landau, 2013). Music can bring the brightest of joys that keeps us moving through our dull and boring lives. An example of this joy is Ishmael Beah’s life as a boy soldier in his book A Long Way Gone. As he tells you his story, he tells of his dance group with his friends, the times he heard music in the middle of war, and how music saved him from the madness that brewed within him. Music has the unique ability to create peace in a person’s life despite the difficulties surrounding them, and to bring a constant reminder of who they are as a person.
Because of this musical therapy has received many positive remarks, because music heard by the human ear that can impact someone 's emotional state is more powerful than any medicine.
Music has done a great deal for many people. The importance of music has been shown evident throughout these three articles: “The Transformative Power of Working with People Who Are Facing Death” written by Sharon Graham, “How Taylor Swift’s Music Helped Me When My Mom Died” written by Fallon Wilson, and "I Will Forever Remain Faithful" written by David Ramsey. The three articles will bring about in conversation with one another the importance of music in the lives of the affected people. Although they may differ in various ways, we’ll ultimately come to a better understanding of the effect of music on people.
1.1 Music Therapy Music therapy is the practice of using music as a form of treatment for certain conditions (especially mental conditions). The idea of using music as a form of therapy dates back to Aristotle’s and Plato’s days. Aristotle understood the great impact music had on listeners and spoke about how it can affect the emotional states of an individual. “Music directly imitates the passions or states of the soul… when one listens to music that imitates a certain passion, he becomes imbued with the same passion; and if over a long time he habitually listens to music that rouses ignoble passions, his whole character will be shaped to an ignoble form” (Aristotle). Music can affect the brain and body in unexpected ways.

I am at my first stages in undertaking the large task of becoming a music therapist. I believe that music therapy is the use of music to obtain a non-musical goal. There are many steps in this process, such as evaluating the clients’ needs, obtaining a rapport, establishing long and short term goals, and learning the clients’ style, speed, and learning style. I believe that in music therapy, anyone that has a problem, being that of mental, physical or social nature, can prosper from the use of music. I believe that music is hardwired into everyone.
III. Finally, music offers many advantages to those who listen. A. Medically, certain music can help significantly in healing the mind and the body. 1. Music therapists are professionals trained to use music and/or musical instruments to promote overall health and well-being in their patients (“Positive & Negative…,” 2017).
Do people ever stop and think that a certain song has changed their mood completely? One minute they were mad and the next they are sad. Or that music can help people with illnesses and disabilities. Response to Mo Tzu’s Against Music Whether or not music has any real world usefulness is entirely up to opinion. Mo Tzu, one of China’s first real philosophers, believed music’s “ benefits were limited to an extremely small number of people, namely the very wealthy”(Tzu 308). He did not hate music, but rather saw no use for it in society and therefore believed that people’s tax money should not go into artistic programs that do not benefit the country directly. Melodies and harmonies are used to transport patients to new and safe places. The sweet rhythms bring peace and relaxation to stressed minds. Self-worth is found between each melodic note, and anxiety and depression are long forgotten. Memories that were once lost are now found, and medication is improved by this one simple healing tool.
Therefore, I am standing here to hopefully persuade all of you regarding the benefits of music that you could experience in your life.
