“74% of serial killers said they experienced psychological abuse as a child” (Crimetraveller.org). This research does not include physical, sexual, or other forms of abuse that serial killers received as a child. All these serial killers experienced traumatic events that changed how their brain worked. These people’s brains were completely changed due to what they went through. This left them with mental issues that made them think what they were doing was okay. Golding claims that human nature is inherently evil, due to the events that occur during Lord of the Flies, however, he is wrong, while humans can do terrible things, it is usually due to surroundings and circumstances, overall, human nature is good. In Lord of the Flies, the boys …show more content…
Throughout the story, Atticus Finch explains repeatedly to his children how people are good, and how they should be good, and how everyone’s circumstances are different which causes people to change and be less than good, or evil. “The one thing that does not abide by majority rule is a person’s conscious” (Lee 140). Overall, a person will always have their conscience, which reminds them of what is good and makes them feel remorse when doing something wrong. Whether one chooses to listen to their conscience or not is their choice. And if this choice results in something terrible, that is nobody’s fault but their own. This does not make human nature completely evil, though. This makes this person evil. Human nature is inherently good and can be affected because of what someone when through as a child. Oftentimes, when people are abused, neglected, or just had a rough childhood, it affects their behavior. But this is because they act the way they are used to the people around them acting. “They did the best they could with the sense that they had” (Lee 46). People act the way they act because it is all they know. The people in To Kill a Mockingbird are extremely discriminatory towards Tom Robinson because that is all they know. Towards the end of the book, these people realize that they had been wrong, and their conscience helps them realize that they had been wrong. Overall, people can only act the way they have seen or
“The one thing that doesn’t abide by majority rule is a person’s conscience.” In To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee Atticus uses Pathos, ethos and logos to convince Tom Robinson could never have committed this crime. Atticus is fighting the inevitable battle of racism and trying to prove a black man's innocence in court. His strength and intelligence is about to change at least one person in the jury to look past his skin color and see him as an equal. Taking this one small step forward is a major step for the equality of everyone.
To Kill A Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, reveals how listening to one's conscience can show strength while giving into to society's expectations can show weakness. Atticus shows his strength by not giving into society's popular belief that white people are better than black people. He explains to Scout his feelings when a white man cheats a black man. He says, "Whenever a white man does that to a black man, no matter who he is, how rich he is, or how fine a family he comes from, that white man is trash" (252.) By following his conscience, Atticus remains true to himself and his children which is hard to do in such a polarized society.
This put Atticus’s whole family in danger. While To Kill a Mockingbird shows the ugliness that can come from judging others, its ultimate message is that great good can result when one defers judgement until considering things from another point of view.
Atticus had always tried to teach me through his actions that I had to look from other people’s perspectives before I judged them. I remember that when I first heard the news of what Mr. Ewell did to my father after the trial, I was shocked that he would do such a cruel act towards an innocent man. At the time, this incident only reinforced my belief that all the Ewells were white trash, since I looked at this only through my point of view. On the other hand, Atticus looked from Mr. Ewell’s perspective and realized that almost anyone would react similarly under those circumstances. Atticus always wanted to understand the reasoning behind a person’s actions, because he believed that everyone had some “good” in them.
In Lord of the Flies, William Golding weaves in biblical ties through characters and their actions to explore whether man is inherently good or evil. In the book, Golding expresses Simon’s character as a parallel to Jesus through the events leading up to his death, including the death itself. On page 135, Jack chooses to begin the tribal hunt to celebrate the formation of a new tribe and the welcoming of new members. As “the chant rose a tone in agony,”(Golding 136) everyone became excited and nervous. Injured from passing out, Simon stumbled into the middle of the hunt as the chant rose with the sound of fear and desire.
In To Kill A Mocking Bird, Harper lee shows that it is better to make decisions based on your own conscience than society's expectation. Three characters that made their decision based on their own conscience are Atticus, Boo Radley, Jem. Even though society was against them, they stuck to what they thought is right and made their own decisions. Atticus got rejected by society for helping a helpless colored man, he made a decision which was very unusual because most of the people in Maycomb were racist and picked on black people. Atticus makes decisions based on his own conscience by taking on the Tom Robinson case, the society were against him and even said “do you defend n****** Atticus?”(Lee 75) everyone was surprised by the decision atticus made, and most people were against him and started to hate him and make fun of him.
He does what he thinks is right even if it goes against the majority of people. Since Atticus is a moral and ethical person he does what he thinks is right and he must have a clear conscience. “But before I can live with other folks I’ve got to live with myself” (140). Atticus says that he has to approve of his own actions before others do and that the conscience does not abide by majority rule. In addition, Atticus is not one to give up, especially when he is making a change this significant.
In Golding's novel The Lord of the Flies the author claims that human nature is naturally evil. This assessment of human nature is accurate in the real world and in other novels like Animal Farm by George Orwell. There are different levels of evil and people fall differently among those levels. “Not all evils are equally evil, but evil is morally bad or wrong” (Vocabulary.com) In Lord of the Flies Golding presents human nature as fundamentally evil through the use of the five boys stranded on an island.
“The one thing that doesn’t abide by majority rule is a person’s conscience.” This is a quote from Atticus Finch, a courageous and wise character from Harper Lee 's novel, To Kill A Mockingbird. The story is told through the perspective of a young girl, Jean Louise ¨Scout¨ Finch. She lives with her older brother, Jeremy, and widowed father and prominent lawyer, Atticus, in Maycomb, Alabama during the time of the Great Depression. Throughout the novel, the children experience the injustice and prejudice of society through a tough case that their father was appointed to and are taught to respect and tolerate all people, despite their differences.
Many other times has Atticus instilled the importance of conscience in to Scout and Jem of the right to understood from others. “You never really do understand a person until you really consider things from his point of view or until you climb in to his skin and walk around in it” (page 30) quoted by Atticus, it describes the reality of his
First, the children who grew up to become serial killers were physically abused when they were younger. According to Kirby Child, “36 percent have experienced physical abuse,” (Child 1) and “26% have experienced sexual abuse,” (Child 1). These statistics show that many people who were physically and sexually abused grew up and chose to do the same thing to other people. Another way they were abused was mentally. According to George E Rush, “Many serial killers experience childhood trauma or early separation from their mothers,” (Rush 1) and “As a consequence of that trauma or separation, scientists believe, they learned to suppress empathy or suffered damage to the areas of the brain that control emotional impulses,” (Rush 1).
Most serial killers have stated that they have gone through psychological abuse, physical abuse, and even sexual abuse. Regardless of how bad
He also wanted to do what was right. Clincher;Atticus Finch shows how important to stand up for others because it follows the golden rule of treating others the same way you want to be
Human nature and pride show when an individual has traits of humanity, and responsibility is other needed. Atticus didn't give up on his visions throughout the novel, and this is very important to the younger readers, because his character was a role model to many. " Then Mr. Underwood’s meaning became clear: Atticus had used every tool available to free men to save Tom Robinson, but in the secret courts of men’s hearts, Atticus had no case. Tom was a dead man the minute Mayella Ewell opened her mouth and screamed," (Lee 82). This quote explains that not many people believed in Atticus, but he believed in himself and his case, and that's what mattered in the long run.
Man is Inherently Evil In Lord of the Flies, a novel by William Golding, there are several themes expressed through the boys from the beginning to the end. The main theme conveys that man is inherently evil. This can be understood from most aspects of the book. Golding conveys that man is inherently evil through the boys need to undermine each other and the loss of morality in their decent to chaos.
