Cultural competence is essential in providing proficient patient care. The Jewish population has endured anti-Semitic attitudes for decades, yet continues to pass on the traditions and values that encompass the people. The Jewish Museum of Florida provides a wonderful glimpse into Jewish culture. In attending one of the museum’s events, a better understanding of the culture was gained. This paper will discuss the event, including a reflection upon the experience, the values and beliefs identified within the culture, and finally, the implications of these lessons in advanced nursing practice. Description of the Event The Jewish Museum of Florida is a non-profit organization that opened to the public over 20 years ago. The building was originally built as a synagogue in 1936 and was used for Miami Beach’s first Jewish congregation. Later, it housed a traveling exhibit, called MOSAIC: Jewish Life in Florida, and was then restored to …show more content…

Today, the collections within the museum include photographs, videos, audio tapes, documents, newspapers, works of art, religious objects, books, clothing articles, and more. The exhibits serve to educate the public of the 250 year history of Jewish life in Florida and include a Timeline Wall, The Mosaic Core Exhibit, and 3 audio-visual presentations. The building itself has historical significance in Miami Beaches Jewish history. Events also take place at the museum, such as walking tours, lectures, and concerts (Jewish Museum of Florida- FIU). On February 15th, 2016 a lecture was held at the museum. An associate professor of Hebrew Scriptures at Barry University, Dr. Deena Grant, presented “Genesis, Creation and the Emergence of Biblical Monotheism”.
