Joel Salatin's The Grass Farmer

The owner of the horse and puppy is a middle aged, middle class farmer. The fact that they choose his profession as a farmer illustrates what America was built on. This targets not only the prideful Americans but the blue collar, everyday industrious man. The view of an American farmer is described portrayed as a hard worker who owns and runs their own business.

Joe goes to see someone who previously had farm issues. On the other hand, Maddie begins to sympathize with the farm more as the story goes on. She likes the idea of being a collective rather than just an individual.

The perception of wilderness can be problematic. One of the most prominent points that Cronon made in his evaluation is the ideology that wilderness is an illusion to escape reality. This perception can be ambiguous because it segregates humanity from nature, by establishing the idea that wilderness is separate from everyday life. Also, Cronon calls attention to the issue of dividing the land and calling it wilderness. The issue of this isolation is that it disintegrates humans and nature, rather than bringing them more in unity.

With the United States having numerous amounts of health issues and food outbreaks yearly, it is safe to say that we need a hopeful idea for the future to bring healthy and natural foods. Many people believe industrial/factory farming should continue to increase, but it’s quite the contrary, industrial/factory farming needs to be put to end and the only type of farming that should be expanding is the system used in Polyface farm, which is holon farming. In this event, Howard is looking upon the farm-scene that he has been away from for so long with its “endless drudgeries.” With this, all of the joy of Howard’s homecoming disappeared. Among this farm-scene was Howard’s farmer brother, Grant, who was angry at Howard for his elegant clothes and clean hands. In conclusion, Howard comes home from his successful career and is struck with feelings of tension and overwhelmed by the farm life that he has been away from for so long.

The Dust Bowl, beginning in the 1930s, added to the struggle of American farmers as lands out west in states such as Oklahoma and Kansas were over-plowed, causing the topsoil to become uprooted, creating massive dust storms. These dust storms left the land unusable to farm, displacing many Americans in the agricultural industry. Steinbeck’s The Harvest Gypsies displays the struggles these farmers faced when moving west to California, hoping to find some sort of work. Many displaced farmers lived in squatters’ camps, temporary dwellings for those looking for work. Steinbeck described these camps as having awful living conditions, saying that “From a distance it looks like a city dump, and well it may, for the city dumps are the sources for the material of which it is built.”

Another technique the author uses is to put you in the farmer’s shoes so that the audience can empathize with the farmer. “Three thousand hours a year is a staggering amount of time to spend working, particularly if many of those hours involve being bent over in the hot sun, planting and weeding in a rice paddy ”(Gladwell, 2008, p. 235-6). Here the audience both feels bad for the farmer and feels the enormity of the amount of work that a rice paddy farmer has to go through which allows the audience to both empathize with the farmer as well as sympathize. Other techniques that Gladwell uses to appeal to the reader’s emotions are the use of a description of rice farming so that the reader can understand the complexity of rice farming, the use of powerful proverbs to invoke the reader, and the use of a joke to include the

John Steinbeck, in the novel, Grapes of Wrath, identifies the hardships and struggle to portray the positive aspects of the human spirit amongst the struggle of the migrant farmers and the devastation of the Dust Bowl. Steinbeck supports his defense by providing the reader with imagery, symbolism and intense biblical allusions. The author’s purpose is to illustrate the migrant farmers in order to fully exploit their positive aspects in the midst of hardships. Steinbeck writes in a passionate tone for an audience that requires further understanding of the situation.

In Tangerine, most people are not affluent and the land there had gone through many stages of development that worsens the rift between man and nature but yet they have an uneasy balance with nature. One that may not last.

In “In the Strawberry Fields,” Eric Schlosser describes the hardships immigrants go through to make money for their families. Schlosser meets with the farm owner, Doug, as well several works on a strawberry farm. Doug mentioned that college kids thought picking strawberries would be a good way to make extra money, but they almost never lasted more than an hour. Schlosser then talks to Francisco a worker on the farm “He picked strawberries six days a week, sometimes seven, for ten or twelve hours a day.” These people have horrible living conditions as well as working conditions, but endure it all so they can send money back to their families.

In the series of articles written by John Steinbeck, Harvest Gypsies, Steinbeck describes the inhumane conditions and abuse enforced upon the new migrants composed of Dust Bowl refugees. Through detailed accounts of the squatter camps and recurring descriptions of the helpless migrants that live in them, Steinbeck conveys a powerful image of the migrants that invokes sympathy from the readers. Along with gaining sympathy for the migrants, he also shines a light on the oppressive Farmers Association and other large farm groups that controlled the labor in California.
