In Outliers: the story of success, Malcolm Gladwell tries to prove why successful people are successful. Particularly in chapter eight; Gladwell claims that rice farmers are hard workers, that hard workers are not successful, and that Asians are better than Westerners in math. Gladwell uses many techniques to persuade the audience to his point of view, which he does beautifully. Gladwell uses these different techniques to prove his claims in a variety of ways. All of his techniques can be categorized as Ethos, Pathos or Logos. Ethos refers to the author’s credibility and authority on the subject matter as perceived by the audience (Williams, 2012). Gladwell is a staff writer for The New Yorker as well as a bestselling author that doubles as a public speaker (Donadio, 2006); and his experience shows in his writing. Another technique the author uses is to put you in the farmer’s shoes so that the audience can empathize with the farmer. “Three thousand hours a year is a staggering amount of time to spend working, particularly if many of those hours involve being bent over in the hot sun, planting and weeding in a rice paddy ”(Gladwell, 2008, p. 235-6). Here the audience both feels bad for the farmer and feels the enormity of the amount of work that a rice paddy farmer has to go through which allows the audience to both empathize with the farmer as well as sympathize. Eve is lacking credibility and character because she is not an established author. Eve is not a credible author because she is a freelance writer. Eve does not have good credibility because she blogs and contributes to an opinion magazine and website.
Think of success like watching a tree grow the branches split into different paths one can take each split is another opportunity to prosper and grow beautiful leaves like trophies. He ended up creating a very persuasive letter, one that effectively uses ethos in establishing his character, logos in providing reason and logic, and pathos in reaching human emotions. To use the appeal of ethos, a writer is responsible for establishing common ground with their readers. One way a writer can establish common ground with their readers is to prove their credibility by naming their credentials. This will help a writer be seen as an authority figure because it tells their readers they have experience in the subject.
In "Outliers: The story of success", Malcom Gladwell explained and gave examples of ways to be successful. There are many ways that Gladwell mentioned, such as luck, practice, background, family, and culture. There are many more of course, but I will save time. There are three of which I think are the most important, these being Intelligence, Social Skills, and Location; and these are explanations as to why I think these are the most important.
In Malcolm Gladwell’s Ted Talk “Choice, Happiness, and Spaghetti Sauce,” he uses rhetorical devices like pathos, logos and ethos to argue that the people can’t always explain what they want or what will make us the happiest. Gladwell talks about Howard Moskowitz and how he helped Ragu to understand that there is no ‘good’ tomato sauce, but the one a single person prefers over another. There should be lots of variety, because all different types of people have their own preference and being the company that supplies it would give you the upper hand. Zombies are experiencing an up rise in popularity because they are being used in video games and television shows such as “The Walking Dead”. In Morgan Spurlock’s film, Supersize Me, he uses three common rhetorical strategies: ethos, pathos, and logos. He uses all three effectively, however pathos has the greatest effect out of all three rhetorical strategies. Spurlock uses ethos, or ethical appeal, in his film.

The stereotypical definition of success would be someone who has a high-paying job or is in the upper-class. Outliers has served to teach students the means of being successful and the importance of seizing opportunities as they come. Personally, Outliers has changed my views of success in numerous ways. Before reading said book, I had always assumed people who were naturally talented or had specific privileges were the only ones who could get far. However, Gladwell’s writing has informed me that anyone, if they are prepared to work hard, can reach their goals.
