Brutus is not a villain or a hero, or dishonorable, either. Cassius is the villain because he tricks Brutus into turning against his best friend, Caesar. Cassius is jealous of Caesar's power and wants to get rid of him. To do so, “Cassius needed Brutus to lend his plot respectability…” (Reeb). Brutus’ thoughts of Caesar are altered by manipulation. Cassius states that he plans on writing multiple letters in different handwritings that express concern about Caesar being a tyrant, knowing that this would cause Brutus to side with him against Caesar. Due to Brutus’ desire to have the best for the people, he is driven to believe that killing his best friend is necessary for the good of Rome to rid them of the supposed tyrant. Cassius makes Brutus question his morals and loyalty to his best friend. “The two most prominent plotters of Caesar's assassination exhibit very different characters: Cassius is eager to proceed…” (Reeb). Cassius has no problem with getting rid of Caesar just for the purpose of gaining more power, whereas Brutus needs to hear from multiple citizens that Caesar is a tyrant in order for him to want to assassinate him. Brutus also goes against villainous characteristics when the conspirators suggest killing Antony along with Caesar and Brutus convinces them all of how that would be overkill and reminds them of their goal of removing a tyrant, and nothing more. This demonstrates the lack of villainous qualities Brutus has, but he is still not a hero. In most cases, to be a hero, the heroic acts need to result in a good

Brutus cares more about his country than he does his best friends life. Caesar was Brutus’s best friend and he recognized that his best friend was becoming power hungry and was too ambitious. Only a true tragic hero of Shakespearian era play could be able to recognize the fact that one of the people they love the most has become too ambitious and the only way to stop him is by putting him to death for the good of his country. Brutus is an honorable man.
Brutus was a traitor to his country because of his display of treason. However, Brutus may have done what was best for Rome, to improve and reestablish his beloved country. Similarly, people may claim that Brutus was, in fact doing what was best for his country, and that murdering Caesar was not a betrayal. He seems to feel that Caesar would not be an asset to Rome and Brutus wants to really improve the country.
The undoubted similar reason they both held is their fear for Caesars rising power and his tight grasp upon the citizens of Rome. Although roughly a similar reason, the deeper motivation behind the reasoning is that Brutus doesn't fear Caesars power for the same reason as Cassius. As shown in this quote, "What means this shouting? I do fear the people choose Caesar for their king," he simply fears that Caesar will abuse his power and dictate over Rome, and so kills him in protection of his people. On the other hand cassius fears Caesars power just as Brutus does, however contrary to Brutus, for selfish reasoning.
This makes Brutus a patriot because when Cassius suggests killing Antony Brutus says “It’ll look like we killed Caesar out of anger and Mark Antony out of envy. Let’s be sacrifices but not butchers, Caius. We’re all against what Caesar stands for, and there’s no blood in that.” Therefore he has good intentions. I also believe Brutus was a patriot because of the speech he made to the people about why he had murdered Caesar.

Since brutus put his city before himself t stopped him from thinking what was the best himself.
Upon hearing this, Brutus does not necessarily have to link his wrongdoing with not killing Caesar, instead, he could have considered other alternatives to change the situation of Caesar being the sole ruling leader. Brutus could be rational and try to enact change by perhaps suggesting to Caesar that a single ruler will not lead to good outcomes. This is a logical solution because Caesar, as proud as he is, will be willing to listen to the opinions of a fellow friend and family member to show that he is a wise leader. There are many other possible situations whereby Caesar does not have to be a sole ruler, either he can step down from power, or more powerful individuals such as Brutus or Mark Anthony can step up to assist Caesar in a triumvirate. The fact that Brutus did not consider his options and decided to join the conspiracy showed that his own interpretation of Cassius’ words led him to think that murder is the right thing to
Cassius saves the life of Caesar, sees him beg for water, and witnesses his epileptic seizure. From these weaknesses, Cassius finds himself to be just as worthy of the crown as is Caesar.
