1.0 INTRODUCTION
Project Management is the application of knowledge, skills, tools, techniques to project activities to meet project requirements. Project management is accomplished through the application and integration of the project management process of initiating, planning, executing, monitoring and controlling and closing (King, 2014). Nowadays, in order to become a successful project manager and to ensure the project’s success, they should possess attributes such as critical thinking skill, analysing skill as well as problem solving skill. Meredith & Mantel (2012) define certain attributes of effective project managers as well as three specific leadership styles: Intellectual, Managerial, and Emotional. Individuals will not just only possess attributes for one leadership style, but normally a combination of two or more. This is exceedingly important to identify because in today’s corporate world project manager must be flexible in every aspect of their job.
A project success is highly depends on several factors. According to Bryde (2003) Project Management Performance Assessment model consists of leadership,

Whether it’s in person or via email, with a sub-contractor or stakeholder, effective communication serves as the very bedrock of a project. It can influence public opinion, give the team a sense of purpose, persuade top management to increase funding and boost project success rates. Highly effective communicators are also more likely to deliver projects on time and within budget. In a real case study for AT&T Center of Excellence Project, they highlighted that efficient and effective communication is the key element for the success of the project. Without appropriate communication, the project risked going unrecognized and not being used to its full potential (AT&T PMCOE,
Leadership a hard thing to define. There is no one definition that can incorporate every individual 's personal leadership style. Each leader has to decide for him or herself what their approach to leadership will be and how they want to approach it. Some people believe that leadership is an quality that you are born with, I do not believe that is the case. Leadership is a skill that can be not only taught, but continually improved on.
I have been given the opportunity to work with various stakeholders, both internal and external. I always ensure that I act with integrity, ensuring that I deliver my work with the best of my knowledge to those who requires them. As RMS is a big organization, it is common that sometimes, people that matters for a piece of work were not being heard. This is where my skill to communicate effectively proves useful. I organized meetings, allowing stakeholders to have a platform to provide feedback and summarized critical points in memo and translating business jargons to specific audience.
One leadership style I have obsesrved of both a project manager and superintendent is to lead by example. Both the project manager and superintendent play major roles in a project, and starting a project with a motivated, positive attitude can set the tone for the project environment. When these two roles show positive qualities, others involved in the project will as well. Another management style that I have observed of a project manager is having an “open door” policy by always welcoming questions from other project team members. There are several strengths and weaknesses associated with each of the above mentioned leadership and management styles.
One without the other is incomplete. A project cannot become successful with leadership or management alone. Both leadership and management are necessary for the project to complete successfully. However, for the sake of argument, we say that Leadership is more prominent in the Initiating, Planning and Execution phase, and management is more prominent in the Execution, Monitoring and controlling and Closing phase. This does not mean the absence of management when leadership is more prominent or the absence of leadership when management is more prominent.
Main Management Methodologies and Differences between them Difference methodologies used in project management are, PMI PMBOK PRINCE2 Agile Waterfall Approach Depending on the project size and the type we can consider one of the above and can argue one is better than the other. PMI PMBOK This is a method produced by project management institute and revised and printed every four years. Question two: Though management and leadership styles have been somewhat in terms of generations' views on important leader attributes and their own leadership behaviors. Firefighters have recognized generational differences in their profession and the need to account for these differences in their training. There is also a concern for building and training their future leaders. Ralph M. Stogdill, in his survey of leadership theories and research pointed out that, “There are almost as many different definitions of leadership as there are persons who have attempted to define the concept”.
A Project Leader, as opposed to a manager that manages the team by bending it to fit the project, guides from the front and mainly aims to realise the potential of the team by using skills and resources at his/her disposal to achieve the best from the team (Curlee & Gordon, 2011). The complexity theory is furthermore about accepting chaos in some stages of the project life cycle, but in such a manner that allows the project manager a level of individuality to move a project forward. Hence, complexity is about learning to accept certain unknowns with flexibility and grace. (Curlee & Gordon, 2011). A leader who motivates individuals can assist in creating a controlled hurricane that can conquer complex tasks.
Project management is then the application of skills, knowledge, tools and methods to project activities to gather the project requirements (Pmi.org, n.d.). In the current stiff economy, senior management needs to
Understanding leadership Describe the factors that will influence the choice of leadership styles or behaviours in workplace situations Leaders are performing different styles of leadership, as each leader maintain to develop her/his own personal style. Many factors may influence the style a leader uses. Some of the factors may create naturally, while others are a product of the leader's environment. Some leaders may need to improve their leadership style to follow to a changing culture. a. Personality Traits: A leadership style may become an expansion of the leader's personality.
Communication occurs in everyday life. We talk to our friends, family, and peers, but it becomes essential for a team. Communication is the building block to improvement. Jon Gordon stated in the book, The Hard Hat, “ Communication builds trust, trust generates commitment. Commitment fosters teamwork, and teamwork delivers results.
In addition, effective communication is one of the most important factors that can influence the result of team’s work. Whether there is a good result of group’s work
Based on the readings, sound, direct, and efficient communication is necessary for all organizations to promote their values advertise their products and give new and existing information to all areas of the organization and to the public (Ferrell et al., 2016) Thus, effective communication is fundamental for all organization's
Different scholars identified various kinds of leadership styles that affect the job performance, satisfaction and learning and development of subordinates. Warrick, D.D (1981) cited that there are no doubt variables other than a leader’s style that affect employee performance and development but leadership style plays a significant role and not to be underestimated. An awareness of leadership styles and their consequences are very important because it may either facilitate or inhabit skill development. The major theories on leadership are the traits, leadership styles and contingency theories.
The principle reason that motivated me to pursue the MSc Project Management course is the appeal and challenge Project Managers experience in delivering assignments they undertake in their career. The qualification, indeed, lead to very smart and modern careers for graduates who love challenges, creativity, leadership and success. As a graduate of Mathematics, I have cultivated these features in my student life. Now, for my master level of study, I would like to take my chance of attaining formal skills in the area of project management. From my research, I see that Project Management is the application of skills, knowledge and techniques to meet the objectives of a project and stake holder’s expectations.
At the same time, as a Scrum Master(SM), a project manager is also responsible for ensuring the team obeys to its processes, ensuring resolution/escalation of inadequate or ill-defined user stories, Product Owner accountability and removing barriers and at the same time, shielding the team from external interference. Different types of project managers will be required by different firms, but some of skills are inborn. When it comes down to it, Leadership [3] assumes to be the most important inherent skill of a project manager. The project manager is highly responsible for the project's success or failure of a project. It may be a burden for him/her, but it is essential for this wisdom of possession to occur in order for the project to have a right direction.
