Professional Identity and Careers Paper Professional identity is prominent topic for licensed professional counselors and is a priority for many counseling organizations as they look to the future of the counseling profession (Kaplan & Gladding, 2011). I will discuss how professional identity is a combination of a counselor’s skill set, personal values and self-reflection (Young & Cashwell, 2017), consider how ethics interact with professional identity and apply this to my own personal career aspirations. Counselor Identity Counseling has been defined by 29 counseling organizations as “a professional relationship that empowers diverse individuals, families, and groups to accomplish mental health, wellness, education, and career goals” (Kaplan, Tarvydas, & Gladding, 2014, p366).

Section 1: Professional Development Plan For most of my life I have been motivated to help people so when I made the decision to continue my education at Walden University, I knew that I was ready for the journey. I am currently seeking a master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and I am expected to graduate in the winter of 2025. This paper was written on June 30th, 2023, with the intent of further understanding my motivations for seeking this degree as well as visualizing the type of counselor I want to be in the future. Throughout this paper, I also discuss what is expected of me throughout my degree program, counseling career, and overall professional development.

Currently, I am pursuing a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Interdisciplinary Studies with areas of study in Psychology and Criminal Justice. A Bachelor’s degree in these areas of study, can open the doors to many different career paths ranging from human services to research to counseling. Personally, I would like to seek a career that will allow me to have an impact on other people’s lives. For this reason, I choose to explore the career of a Foster Care Placement Specialist. To better understand the, job responsibilities, employment requirements and pros and cons of this career I decided to seek counsel from my friend, Rachel Zimmerman, a Family Services Specialist with the Virginia Department of Social Services.

The seven elements of this coaching context and their characteristic flow are relationship-based, client-centered, goal-driven, listening, asking, acting and supporting (Stoltzfus, 2005). Consequently, each of these characteristics is essential for the Christian or secular coach.

Like other professions in the mental health field and helping professions, counseling typically attracts those who are imbued with a need to help others, to make a difference in others’ lives, the community around them and sometimes even the world. There are many facets to a counselor and to counseling, some of which take on personal attributes such as personality, the values and beliefs held by counselors, and what they perceive their role in the counseling profession to be. Other facets involve ethical considerations in therapy, the importance of the profession, the value and process of change, important counseling practices and the value of necessary self-care a counselor ought to engage in. The role of a counselor is to act as a conduit to change and wellbeing in a client.

In our continuously evolving world of changes, we set new targets for our lives, have new visions and dreams, and become aware of those visions and dreams that we had when we were children. We find ourselves overwhelmed by the many present challenges, becoming more and more confused about the choices we made and riveted to those choices as though our destiny is set by them. We become bored, lose hope for a new beginning, and even if we see something new that we believe inspire us, taking the first step in the right direction is scary. We become resigned, stuck, frozen! Throughout the history, there have been heated discussions on what constitutes a good life. Philosophers have given different annotations on the meaning of good life based on their beliefs, perspectives or even scientific-based evidences.
