If we could go back in time would you? What if we did not have to, we could change our lives and world around us to be however we want. Many people think that life in the eighteenth century was much harder than today; others, however, believe that the quick pace of work and home life, the lack of an appreciation of beauty, and a general laziness of the populace has made life in the 2000s much worse than in the 1880s.
In the 1880s people spent more time at home with their families. In the 1880s women stayed home to raise their children and help with crops. Parents had control over what their children were being taught. Parents were able to model their behavior of hard work to their children. Children could be taught morals and hard work by

However, Joel Stein an American Journalist for Los Angeles Times pronounces “Millennial’s are the ME ME ME GENERATION”. Every year it is apparent that people are becoming more and more self absorbed. With all the technology and apps available in this day and age, it is easy to want to join in on the let’s talk about me epidemic. There are apps where the sole purpose is to post your thoughts and daily activities. Usually if someone wants to hear about your life then they generally will ask. This generation assumes everyone wants to hear about their opinions. “The incidence of narcissistic personality disorder is nearly three times as high for people in their 20s as for the generation that 's now 65 or older, according to the National Institutes of Health; 58% more college students scored higher on a narcissism scale in 2009 than in 1982” (Stein). In the 1880 people worked hard to try and make America the best they could. People in the 1880’s cared more about others rather than caring what people thought of them. Just 100 years before in 1783 was the end of the Revolutionary War. America was formed by people who wanted to be free and own their own land. Most of the United States was uninhabited at the time however by the 1880’s New York was already becoming
In the 2013 Time article "The New Greatest Generation," Joel Stein claims that "millennials' perceived entitlement isn't a result of overprotection but an adaptation to a world of abundance"(31). Stein's organizational style appeals to readers because he arranges the article in a way that lures the reader's attention in the beginning, so he can later propose a new outlook. Stein begins describing characteristics of millennials unfavorably in order to overcome those negative characteristics and offer a new, positive perspective. The author initially establishes a negative attitude towards millennials to appeal to the feelings of the older, adult generations. Stein’s structure successfully acknowledges the negative views, for the purpose of
Jeffersonian America was the time period from 1800 to 1824. Within this era, Thomas Jefferson was elected president, and he established the Democratic-Republican Party in opposition to the Federalists Party of Alexander Hamilton. Throughout this time period economic, political, and social elements are present, and they influenced the change that occurred within America during this era. "America's embargo against foreign goods and the demands of the wartime economy provided incentives for economic innovation" (Keene, 215). This wartime economy relied heavily on cash crops, specifically cotton.
The growth the country has made knows no bounds. America is still growing from the past and present day, its ancestors and the future that awaits it. America was founded on July 4th, 1776 by the first merchants and adventurers ever to set foot in this new land. They left their homes seeking a new life from their tyrant of a king. The founding fathers set foot to make this country into something great, setting rules and guidelines to follow under a democracy unlike the old country.

Heading West Historical Report Life in the 1800’s was hard and very different from present day. From what they ate, how they made their food, to their struggles in the winter were unlike today 's problems. You might be surprised that they ate the same meals almost everyday. Their cooking tools were way less advanced. For example, they used old school stoves, fireplaces, and heavy iron pots for normal everyday cooking.
During this decade women started to go beyond the job restrictions set by men. Women were expected to stay at home and tend to the children, clean the house, and cook for their family yet they soon
One example of a significant event in U.S. History was the Homestead Act. The Homestead Act of 1862 was an act passed by the federal government to encourage settlement in the west. The act permitted settles to buy a plot of 160 acres for a small fee if they occupied the land they purchased for five years and improved it. The act was significant because it was seen the drive for westward expansion and it also assisted in the rapid development of the west. The next significant event was the Railroad Strike of 1877.
In the beginning there wasn’t much to America. President Jefferson bought the Louisiana Territory in 1803. He sent the Corps of Discovery, led by Lewis and Clark, to explore the territory in 1804, now we have western America. In 1829, Andrew Jackson became president, he didn’t like the Native Americans. He had them leave their land and go elsewhere; Famously known as the Trail of Tears, they walked from their homes to a camp in Oklahoma.
Domesticity is the ideology that one’s home should be distinct from the rest of the world, and that these separate spheres should be associated with gender roles. Moreover, a man’s role should be to work outside the home and a woman’s role should be to stay in the home to offer the family emotional and moral support. The cannon of domesticity developed in New England after industrialization and the market economy emerged in the mid-nineteenth century. Domesticity developed after industrialization because many people, presumably men, went to work outside the household, as opposed to doing labor near the home. Therefore, the cannon of domesticity served to counter the ideals of the working world, which were seen as corrupt and exploitative, by calling for women to uphold the traditional values of family and morality in the home.
Millennials, or America’s youth born between 1982 and 2000, now number 83.1 million and represent more than 25 percent of the nation’s population, according to the new U.S. Census Bureau. Millennials are tech savvy, diverse and have the most liberal attitudes in regards to social and cultural issues than any other generation. Yet the older generation considers them to be a lazy, narcissistic and an egotistical group of people. This is false, the millennial generation is actually the smartest, most open-minded and self-involved individuals society has ever seen. Joel Stein (Time Magazine), believes “[millennials] are pragmatic idealists, tinkerers more than dreamers, life hackers”, they are filled with confidence and high expectations.
Everyone has experienced change at least once in his or her lifetime. Weather it is the change in your appearance, in order, or even a change in environment. In the early 1800’s America experienced many changes such as labor, lifestyle, and communication because of these exact changes America has grown-up to become greater than ever. Firstly, labor; it was the blood, sweat, and the many tears were what made America. During this time, America was just beginning to build its foundation of what would become a great nation.
A major continuity over time will always be shown in the world, even if an event took place years ago. In this standard many dates and time periods were stated. Wars broke out, new presidents took the stand, and a handful of laws were brought into place but were changed as time moved on. Even though these events were dated so long ago, they played a major role in the shaping of our nation. With the past events that occurred, these events are still practiced and used today.
American Women in the Late 1800’s Were married American women in the late 1800’s expected to restrict their sphere of interest to the home and the family? In the late 1800’s women were second-class citizens. Women were expected to limit their interest to the home and family. Women were not encouraged to obtain a real education or pursue a professional career. After marriage, women did not have the right to own their own property, keep their own wages, or sign a contract.
From the 1800s to the 1850s the United States was permanently changed for the better with advancements in everyday life. This period of time was crucial for the development of the society that we live in today with the vast amount of inventions in this time period. Many Americans of this time period began to rely on these modernized inventions which seemed as though they were now necessities, giving Americans a new way of everyday life. If America did not undergo these changes we would not be where we are today in society. With such drastic changes in technology and social and political aspects, the United States was completely transformed during the antebellum period.
Some people argue that Millennials are entitled, self-centred, and uninterested in anything other than their own Facebook and Twitter page. This generation has been known to have high self-esteem, assertiveness, self-importance, narcissism, and high expectations. Having a higher self-esteem comes with many positive outcomes and benefits. People high in self-esteem claim to be more likable, attractive and make better impressions on others in a working environment than other people with low self-esteem. Millennials with greater self-importance are the ones who help others and care about large social
