Burnout: The Phenomenon
Burnout is a psychological concern that effects many educators around the country (Bousquet, 2012). This concept has become popular in the education field, especially in the wake of the twenty-first century. There is not a set definition for what burnout is, but the many researchers that have looked into this phenomenon have similar definitions that speak to different variations of “teacher burnout.”
In order to understand the significance of burnout in the education field, it is important for the reader to understand the history of “teacher burnout”. According to Schwab (1989), the term burnout was coined by Herbert Freudenberger, during the 1970’s, whom was a clinical psychologist familiar with the stress responses shown by staff members in “alternative” institutions. Freudenberger’s view on burnout included three components, which include emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and low personal accomplishment. According to Gupta and Rani, “Teacher burnout is a psychological condition that leads to exhaustion, depersonalization, and decreased teacher achievement and self-worth” (Gupta & Rani, 2014, p. 7). Dr. Beverly Potter (2005) expressed many additional consequences that come with burnout. These consequences include, negative emotions, interpersonal problems, health problems, substance abuse, declining performance, and feeling of meaninglessness. American Teacher is a documentary that advocates the many different problems that teachers face teaching in today’s society. It refutes the perception teachers are the problems within the education system and that are things that make it hard for them to successfully run their classroom. The film questions the priorities that our country has when it comes to education. A lot of people believe teachers have short work days and make good pay when in reality they spend more hours in their work day than most and their classrooms are underfunded. American Teacher uses a large collection of teacher testimonies and contrasts it along with the demands of the teaching profession.
Organizational Support Direct care staff often look to their direct supervisors or the organization itself for support to prevent burnout. The staff’s direct supervisor needs to be aware of the individuals employees stress level. This can be done my spending time with the individual while working directly with individuals and also listening and paying attention to what the staff member is saying. Many human service organizations offer very generous paid time off packages to their employees so that the employees have the opportunity to take time off for themselves or their families. While the paid time off package is nice the organizations need to look at other options as well to keep valuable employees and reduce burnout.

Almost the entire study variables will be discussed in this chapter through reviewing relevant literature. Burnout Burnout is defined as a psychological syndrome which characterized by three concepts: emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and diminished personal accomplishment. Emotional exhaustion refers to lack of energy and feeling that one’s emotion is used up to increase psychological demands. Depersonalization refers to treat other as objects rather than people through uncaring attitudes and behaviors.

The strains on the healthcare field can eventually lead to physical,mental and emotional exhaustion also known as burnout. The statistics don’t lie. Physician burnout is a real problem that exists, and without any type of intervention, can become a personal problem that can ultimately end very badly. No matter if it means that you’ve taken that step to leave the career you’ve been studying for and practicing almost half of your life or falling into an emotional pit so deep that you start filling your life with addictions. In some circumstances, you may be dealing with the beginning of physician burnout without really having a name for what you’re going through. The question that your patients come to you for is how do I deal with their condition, and in this case, you’ve got to answer this very question for yourself.
Burnout can happen anywhere to anyone. “The authors have estimated, through a systematic review, that burnout stress can affect 19 to 30 percent of employees in the general working population.” (Finney, 2013). Burnout is one of the factors that may affect employees’ efficiency, a group connections, motivation and general emotional wellbeing of workers in the working environment. The idea of burnout was separately presented by Herbert Freudenberger in 1974 and Christina Maslach in 1976. The term was used to portray the mental condition of health care volunteers who were indicating such side effects as emotional depletion and loss of inspiration (Freudenberger, 1974, 1975; Maslach, 1976). Burnout is characterized as a psychological syndrome of an emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and a decreased level of individual accomplishment (Schaufeli, Maslach, and Marek 1993).
2.2 Teacher resilience A good number of studies has shown that facing various challenges for teachers in different years of their teaching is inevitable. This issue become important when teaches lack the ability of managing these difficulties which may result in burnout and attrition. To be on the positive side, equipping teachers with qualities that prevent them from frustration and make them to thrive than just survive was an ongoing concern for teacher educators and policy makers. Resilience, as a specific strategy that individuals usually apply when they face a kind of adverse situation (Castro, et al., 2010), has been attracted a lot of attention among researchers.
