One of the most recognized fairytales is “Little Red Riding Hood”. In the Aarne- Thompson Folktale Types and Motifs Index LRRH falls into the tale tile of an AT 333 Red Riding Hood (AT12). Within the story of LRRH, there are two characters that are present in each telling of the tale; LRRH and the wolf. These two characters contrast each other. Whereas the wolf is a wicked, greedy, predator (including sexually), Little Red is innocent (sexually) and depending on the version she is either cunning or naïve (Hallett, 27-29). For the most part, this story type ends with the wolf being bested by either Little Red or an outside force (masculine hero: i.e. hunter, woodsman etc.) that saves her. In a general sense, this tale type is meant to not only entertain but to also teach children not to talk to strangers (Walker, 12). For the Grimms their tales are meant to be more of an academic scholarship rather then a teaching tool like Perrault’s version (Grimm,) The first edition version of the Grimm brother’s fairy tales “Little Red Cap” is similar to Perrault’s version in the ways that she is fooled twice by the wolf. Once she is tricked into leaving the path and then the wolf fools her into thinking he is her grandmother in order to get her close enough to eat her (Grimm,). The difference between the two tales is that the story does not end there because LR is saved by a hunter. The reason for this is as Jack Zipes remarks in the introduction to… Is that the narrators tell the stories they tell are “ a fulfillment of social justice or naïve morality” (end of intro). For generations, fairy tales have served as a source of wonder and horror in equal measure. For each moment of magical fantasy or romantic bliss, there is a terrifying monster or gruesome act of violence, and there are few monsters more terrifying than Bluebeard. On the surface, Bluebeard is the story of one man's gruesome test and the young girl who escapes the punishment of failing it, with a simple message of being careful with your curiosity. In the novel the author uses the elements of good and evil from fairy tales to have an opposite effect in the novel. In Little Red Riding Hood the reader can see that the girl plays the good character as she wants to help her sick grandmother. The wolf is seen as the evil character as he wants to destroy the girl and the grandmother. Little Red Riding Hood gains power over the wolf with help of the hunter, due to that she defeats the wolf alone “Red Riding Hood, however, quickly fetched great stones with which they filled the wolf 's belly, … , but the stones were so heavy that he collapsed at once, and fell dead”. One young woman, completely innocent in life, meets a handsome boy in the woods on the way to her grandmother’s house. He is, of course, a wolf. The charming boy goes to her grandmother’s house and eats granny only to lie in wait for the young girl. She arrives, but instead of cowering in fear, the young girl throws her clothes into the fire and rips off the wolf’s, embracing him for a kiss and for the night. The two stay in bed until morning, together and calm.
The two stories 'Little Red Riding Hood ' and 'Little Red Cap ' have many significant similarities and differences alike. The most notable similarity is the moral ending that characterizes both stories with each having a slight twist. The two tales stories are of a girl who loses her innocence as she moves through the segments of life; childhood through adulthood. While the same has many notable similarities in terms of theme and style, it is easy to point out the difference in the way women are treated in the two stories. In the French version of the tale, the little girl was eaten but not rescued while in German version talks of her rescue, which accentuates the cultural differences in the two stories (Grimm et al. 31).
Disney, alike many other popular storytellers, want these known stories to be friendly, animated, and with an intended audience of children. This is ironic because a retired professor of German and comparative literature from the University of Minnesota, Jack Zipes, directly compares this theme to a news interviewer that “the Grimm’s did not collect these tales for children. They collected these tales to show what life was like. And they wanted to reveal what they considered the divine truths of the tales.” It is obvious that Disney does not have the same motive as the Grimm’s did.
Similarly, Disney’s Cinderella presents a cruel and ambitious stepmother who attempts to arrange marriages for her ugly, foolish, and somewhat comical daughters. In the film, we see their miserable attempt to sing opera, (supposedly in order to appear more feminine) as the mother proudly oversees. In one of the last scenes, she desperately urges them to make the glass slipper fit, and while she doesn’t downright tell them to cut off their toes or heels as in the original (Grimm 119), the comic scene in itself seems to have a subtle layer of tragedy. Every child loves the story of Little Red Riding Hood not only due to her innocence and purity driving her in a great danger, but her fatal destiny also slightly implies the truth that the sweeter the strangers’ mouths speak, the sharper their teeth could be. The tales of Little Red Riding Hood describes a young girl’s journey to her grandmother along the path in the forest, breathtakingly discover that a wolf has eaten her ill grandmother, dressed in her clothes, and yet plans to devour the little girl. Upon reading the stories, many of the readers, even a four-year-old child, suspect the intention of this young girl of exposing the exact location her grandmother when a random wolf in a middle of the forest inquiries about her destination. In the various tales, Little Red Riding Hood seeks out a father figure in predatory negative male figures, therefore she suffers from oppositional defiant disorder afterward explicitly realizes the mortal consequences of indulging.
“Beauty and the Beast” is an original fairy tale and over time have incorporated social, religious and cultural themes. An analysis of the Disney version of “Beauty and the Beast” exemplifies the stereotypes of the more subtle forms of social manipulation that fairytales undergo to employ. The question of whether these stories are made for entertainment or send a much larger picture, depicting to children their gender roles within a society. In this paper gender roles will be represented showing the typical female and male character within a society. Historian Sylvia D. Hoffert defines a gender ideal as “the cluster of characteristics, behavior patterns, and values that members of a group think a man or a woman should have, a set of cultural expectations.”
